is it alright to chaingrab in a tournament match?

Basically, I main both Sheik and Marth (who are well-known for their chaingrabs) and I tend to use the chaingrabs very often. I was just wondering whether using chaingrabs in a tournament match would be looked down upon. Like let's say for example, I chaingrab.... Fox or Falco with Marth and just end it with a forward smash so that I can probably 0-death them (wishful thinking here) or if I use Sheik and just CG Bowser or Ganondorf all day in a tournament match, would that really be looked down upon? or is it legit to do?

Uh....sure why not? A chaingrab is basically a combo like any other combo in the game. Also a good player should also be good at escaping chaingrabs with tricky DI.

Actually it is the tournament norm to chaingrab (ESPECIALLY in marth vs fox/falco).

It'd be more looked down upon if you refused to do it because it was cheap or something like that.

Chaingrab to your hearts content =) though tournament players won't always make it that easy for you to do so...

I'm gonna take "didn't seem too happy" to mean "sighed and made random noises of dissent". Don't worry, lots of people (including Gimpy) do that just out of habit while being combo'd/hit/etc.

But as far as the Sheik on *half the low tier* chaingrab goes... well, from your perspective, you don't win or lose anything from the match, right? It's just a friendly. And that chaingrab is pretty easy to perform, so you probably don't need to practice it that much. What you probably do need to practice, though, is getting the grabs and grab setups against high-level players. So while you could cg him from 0-80 (or whenever it ends), you'd probably get better experience by just ftilt->fair->etc after the first or second grab, and then having to find new ways to grab him again.

Tournament/money/pride matches, though, go all out.

Honestly, I don't see why CGing is bad in friendlies. I had that happen to me and the other guy kept apologizing. It's just part of the game, and an exceptionally powerful tactic against certain characters. I'd rather get owned and learn how to avoid/counter something than not have people use it on me until a real match comes along, when I'll be unprepared.

It is a tournament. You are playing to win. Anyone worth their salt will not "look down upon" something during a tournament. Honour is for before and after the match. The "good luck" at the beginning and the handshake after the match. That is honour. During the match, you should abuse anything not explicitly banned to the fullest. That is how a game evolves.

gimpy was likely just doing it out of habit as someone mentioned. It doesn't mean he looks down on your or anything.

I agree you should do it in friendlies too unless you wanna try some new stuff out. I've had people say sorry to me too for things that are perfectly legit and my response is always "don't be. it's part of the game".

You can't chaingrab in tournament play. It is a technique reserved exclusively for friendlies.

Has it been banned nationally? I know it was banned from select tournaments but for the most part I thought it was considered legal (as it should be).

And of coarse chaingrabbing is legal. Some people look down upon it in friendlies though. But its definitely fine in a tournament match.

No. It's been up to the person hosting the tournament. It was allowed at SCC, but banned (or had certain restrictions placed upon it) at virtually every other major tournament.

Chaingrabbing is fine in a tournament setting, since theoretically, anything short of cheating/abuse/or using a gamebreaking glitch is allowed. The fairness of said techniques can be debated to death, but that's how it's been for years now.

Friendlies are just what they appear to be: a friendly match. There's no need to try your absolute hardest to win a friendly, since what the hell do you gain from doing something that you know works 100% of the time? Bragging rights? Not really, since nobody credible takes friendlies seriously. That's why nobody cares when you say something like, "I beat _______ in a friendly." Friendlies are the best time experiment with new things, and most of all to take a break from the stressful situations that are tournament play.

But if you want to try that hard in friendlies...nobody will want to play said friendlies with you :/

About friendlies, it depends. Some CG's, like Sheik's, are relatively easy to perform, whereas Marth's CG on Fox and Falco can be difficult, and it is very important to get maximum effectivity out of it, to the point where a Grab=Death. To be able to CG that well, you have]/b] to practice it in friendlies.

It just all depends, especially on how your mates react to you CG'ing in friendlies.

when you're just trying to have fun it's up to you - people say don't CG in friendlies but I've never seen a marth NOT try to CG spacies (probably because he has no real alternative followup at low percents but whatever -_-)

Do whatever works for you. Unless they banned that certain technique (i.e. wobbling etc.) then it's 100% OK to use it! Just be sure to cover your ears and drown out the people who complain about you!

i say its their fault for chosing bowser in the first place ;-) and i would agree with nintendodude1189 with the fact that people have to be good enough to chain grab and the btter person has to know how to di to get out of that or otherwise knock the controler out of the oppenents hand Chain grabing is perfectly legal.. all good smasher do it...
