Don't forget either that Nintendo could look at Smash and decide "Okay, we've made enough from this."

If they deem the time right they could just stop making it for whatever reason, as long as they made a fair proift. So if they think that they won't make enough to contunue Smash without Sakurai, then they could not even bother putting money into a sequel.
I was just going to say that.

Sadly, even the best of the best things, come to an end. If nintendo feels that another sequel is just too much,,, or even when they would sell millions, the development of it would be too torublesome, im very sure they will leave brawl as the last uber succesfull game of the franchise......... and start a new franchise.

I sort of hope so...

Could you imagine another smash even matching Brawl's greatness?

I mean my GOD, I have been playing melee ever since it came out....

That's like 6 years!

6 YEARS!

I am actually SCARED of Brawl... I will probably die from the greatness. The greatness will overwhelm me, and I will die. I don't want to die, do you want to die? I sure don't. It will be Melee all over again...

But BIGGER!

o.o I wouldn't be surprised if the second coming of christ coincided with Brawl's release....

Brawl is something to fear my friends....

Fear it, for you shall die from the awesomeness.

I can actually well imagine a better Smash than Melee... far better.

I guess being a bloody perfectionist has its merits. =D

Basically, this is how I see it:

Brawl will own.

Brawl sells many many copies.

Nintendo says "HEY! This works!"

Nintendo asks Sakurai to make another one.

Sakurai says no.

Nintendo offers Sakurai a loooooooooooooooot of money.

Sakurai says yes.

Really, if Nintendo makes enough money off this game (sorry, but even Nintendo isn't that super happy, really friendly, in-it-for-the-joy-of-making-games company we all like to think it is;)), Smash will live forever. If Nintendo hasn't already learned that Sakurai makes the best Smash, the worst that will happen is they get someone else to make a sequel, it sucks, Nintendo then realizes Sakurai owns, and Sakurai makes another one. I really don't think this will be Sakurai's last Smash. And I'm not trying to make Sakurai sound greedy here, but - even if Sakurai says he wants to persue another project instead of Smash...... wouldn't YOU change your mind about it if the price was right?

LOL Yeah i agree, if Sakurai doesn't accept a looooooooot of money, Nintendo will find someone or some people to make the next Smash.

IMO as long as nintendo keeps dishing out new consoles there will be a Smash to go along with it.....Sakurai or not

I got the perfect idea for the next smash,

NINTENDO VS. SEGA

I figure since there making a Mario vs. Sonic Olympics, this is definitely possible.

It would be amazing, I think.
Yeah except there's not enough people from Sega.
1. Sonic
2. (insert another Sonic character)

that's it.

Hopefully the SSB franchise will live forever. Sakurai's will come and go, as will development teams. But each, learning the mistakes from the last, will hopefully produce a better game. Who knows though, maybe the SSB series will take a turn for the worse and the games will change their tune. Maybe they will succumb to *gasp* NORMALITY! Characters have hit points and forget percent! Stamina is what it's all about, forget high flying when damaged!

How many Street Fighter games were there? Mortal Kombat? Fighting game franchises tend to be around for long periods of time, because they can get obsolete.

no fighting game is obsolete! The best Mortal Kombat game ever is MKII in the arcade. The Best Street Fighter game is still SSF2T. Just because they make more games doesn't mean that the old ones are obsolete. That being said, they will still make smash games because they make money and generate publicity for nintendo. On top of all the copies of smash that they sell, Smash also popularizes franchises that were previously unkown (fire emblem in the US). I wonder how many people saw Pit in SSBB and decided to buy Kid Icarus on the VC to see what it was like. I bet a lot of people did.

My point is that because smash simultaneously makes a profit in and of itself while generated sales of other franchises makes it an irreplacable and irreplicable cash cow. Nintendo will hold onto it with an iron fist and will not let it go until they go into the red.

The way I see it, it's one Smash game per console.

Super Smash Bros. = N64
Melee = GC
Brawl = Wii

As long as Nintendo keeps making consoles, they'll probably make more sequels, as Sidius has already mentioned.

Nintendo is a firm. They are not a charitable one or a government owned one. They are out to make a profit. Super Smash Bro's is making them an MASSIVE profit with almost fanatic fans, why stop here?

The only reason I see them stopping is if the 'creator' decides to take an 'artistic',or something along those lines, stand and proclames that he will stop making Super Smash Bro's games. Beside the fact that is very unlikely Nintendo would just continue to make them anyway.

So, short answer, no. I don't see them stopping.

If that was true, they wouldn't have made 5 more Mario Parties after everyone didn't want anymore.

There will probably be a few more games.

At least one more after Brawl, because if it could sell millions of copies at this stage in development, and we don't even know the release date yet, it should be the best fighting game ever.

Worse Case scenario is that the games keep getting worse and every game is expected to "save the series" by the fans that are left, who slowly lower in numbers. Like Sonic the Hedgehog, for example.

I would rather have Brawl as the last game than to have that happen.

If the people want more, there will most likely be more to come. Money plays a huge role, of course, but even if Nintendo did make enough income to shut the series down, I think they would still look into continuing Smash Bros. It's about popularity, too. (There will be an end sooner or later, but it shouldn't be anytime soon.)

Not obsolete in the sense that no one plays it, but in that the game and the system that supports it is no longer made. This has to happen, because eventually the cost of putting the game in stores outweighs the profit. At that point, in fact, earlier than that, the franchise will want to make a new game that will be able to make a profit. At this point, Melee sales are probably dead, and GC production has ended. Melee is obsolete as far as profit is concerned. People still play it, but it's definitely obsolete.

Well we do have some info. saying this IS the last Super Smash Bros. game! You see when they made the first SSB the creators of MSG (Metal Gear Solid) asked the creators of SSB to add Snake in the LAST SSB game they will make. Some info says that this ISN'T the last one even though the creators of SSB said they will put snake into the last SSB made.

Sorry I can't put anymore info on this topic right now bell is about to ring and I got to get back to class ^_^

This will probably be the last Smash for a while, atleast until Nintendo's next system.

If it is the last Smash, I hope this one is perfect.

Yep, even if Sakura's no longer working on it Nintendo will probably just make one for the new system like Brawl with even better graphics more charactures and other things, I don't think Smash is going anywhere for awhile.

Just one thing: It can't go on FOREVER. I mean, new Smash games need new characters, and how many characters can they possibly fit on the screen/disk? That's why I think they'll probably only make one or two more after Brawl.

You do realize how ridiculously large disk based storage mediums are going to get next gen and the one after, right? I doubt we'll ever run out of room since we seem to only get one Smash game per generation.

I am not worried about this yet. If or when it is announced, then I will be worried but for now...I just want it to come out.

Sakurai didn't even know about Brawl until it was ANNOUNCED. They probably haven't even begun thinking about the possibilities of a fourth one. Personally, I think there would be a DS or NextGen DS Smash Bros before an official SSB4. Who cares? Melee is still amazing. Even if Brawl sucks, we still have a perfect game to fall back on.

If you could download levels and characters you wouldn't need another Smash.
No. Guitar Hero II on the 360 has new tracks, but III is coming out, isn't it? Because you download a ton of new stages or characters. You need space on the disc. On a PS3 it would work, as they have a ton of unused space, but probably not on a Wii.

Why wouldn't Nintendo make another Smash? The series is making them a whole buttload of money. Nintendo is a company; therefore, they want your money. If Smash will get us to give them our money, why wouldn't they make more?

EDIT:
Don't forget either that Nintendo could look at Smash and decide "Okay, we've made enough from this."

Since when does any business say that they've made enough money from something? Nintendo is a business, just like any other. If it would make them a whole lot of money, they'd release a new Smash each year with one new character and a new level.

I'm inclined to say no at this point. It's been said before, Smash rakes in money, LOTS AND LOTS OF MONEY. Nintendo is good about trying to be loyal to fans and the core audiences with franchises like Smash, but the company can't run on loyalty alone. Money, my friend.

Will this be Sakurai's last smash? I think so.

Will it be THE last Smash? Doubtful.

Indeed. Nintendo's most popular franchises (aside from a couple) generally get sequals over and over and over and over again. And they're often consider relatively good games, though Star Fox and F-Zero haven't gotten a whole lot of love as of late.

I think that, since in a way Smash represents Nintendo franchises as a whole (for crying out loud), that as long as they continue making games, they will continue making Smashes at least once per generation. Perhaps there will be new directors. Perhaps there will be changes. I don't know, I can't predict the future. But it will probably happen.
