Oh, Alcohol also helps. Don't get wasted but a shot of whisky before bed can actually help. That's what I did last semester but I swore off alcohol for this semester (ALL alcohol).

DISCLAIMER: I'm not promoting under-aged drinking, not intentionally anyway. If you are under-age you should probably not use this method.

yeah, thats usually the reason why i don't get sleep well sometimes, with school, work, girlfriend, family, money issues, and more

it all just gets you stressed, which stress will more than likely helps cause you to stay awake

Sudai I have been battling problems of Insomnia for about 3 or 4 years now. I got to a point where I would literally be in a bed for 12-14 hours a night TRYING to sleep only to get 1-3 hours of actual sleep.

Really I tried everything, if you have a chronic insomnia it really does suck but the best medicine is to be in a "better place in life"

Overall more happiness and relaxation and less stress tends to help.

Really there is no super cure all I can do is feel your pain along with you. I still suffer from insomnia currently. It's hell.

Edit: when it comes to medication Melatonin is not something you should be worried about, as it is natural.

You should get scared with stuff that's a poison or a narcotic. There literally are medicines that KO (lawl) you to fall asleep instead of help you relax and get drowsy like Melatonin / Valerian Root.

Look, a lot of you do not have real insomnia. Last night I went to bed a 3 because I wasn't tired, despite needing to wake-up early. I woke up at 11 and felt no rest. If he is experiencing that kind of insomnia, very little will help.

First, go to the doctor. Second, look up this drug called "Alteril." It's takes Valerian, Melatonin, and Tryptophan into one pill that will knock you out, naturally.

Ehh wouldn't exactly call your thing insomnia either. You didn't go to bed because you weren't tired, like you said. Insomnia is difficulty falling or staying asleep. (and if u wake up for two hours in the middle of your sleep almost every night, that's not difficulty staying asleep, it's completely natural as you grow up and grow old.)

Now when you're dead tired and you lay and bed not being able to fall asleep on a nightly basis for five or 6 hours, that's insomnia.

Just thought we get the definition of this correct, I've been studying this in school.

Insomnia.... a gift? If anything it's actaully slowly taking your youthful appearance away, meaning you won't look like you're suppose to look for your age, (ex: you're 25, but look like a 33 yr. old.)

Whenever I can't sleep, I take Advil PM.
Otherwise, a nice hot shower knocks me out cold almost every night.

When I do lie in bed, it's about an hour before I can force myself to sleep. When I do sleep, it's in 2 hour increments.

Thanks, but doctors know more than you do.

Just want to point out something about this: this is very bad advice.

"Natural", whatever that means (cocaine is natural, aspirin derivatives are natural, digitalis is natural), is a word that companies use to try and trick consumers into thinking it's harmless or better for you. Melatonin is a drug just like any other. Don't ever think that a supplement or herbal tablet or "natural" therapeutic is harmless just because it's not medication from a pharmaceutical company.

In fact, these supplements can be very dangerous because they're not regulated. Herbal or dietary supplements usually contain derivatives of the same stuff found in medication; usually it's at lower doses or less potent forms so it's not a problem. But since they're not regulated, each one is different and may contain any amount of active ingredient/inactive additives, stuff that you may be allergic to, etc.

Medications, on the other hand, are very tightly regulated, so you know exactly what you're getting and how much. Always be careful when mixing supplements and medications.

Yeah I just meant melatonin on itself is mostly harmless, and actually poses some beneficial effects on your body. It's a powerful antioxidant, one of the few that can safely enter the brain too and eliminate free radicals.

I know very well what a company means when they say Natural.... it mostly means "we are trying to lure you into our product"

that is NOT to say that a natural product won't be good. It might or it might not.

If you MUST say something at least make sure you know what you are talking about. Melatonin is harmless because your body secretes it naturally when it detects it's time to go to sleep soon (usually when the sun is no longer out) your body secretes it.

What it does exactly is two-fold. That along with Sero/seratonin (forgot the spelling) slows your body down and prepares it for sleep. That's why people recommend not to eat at night because your metabolism is slower and it is more likely to be stored as fat at night.

The second is for being an antioxidant.

Supplementing Melatonin at night is harmless and actually poses as a good temporary sleep aid on a bad night with added help of an antioxidant.

There isn't even a known overdose amount for Melatonin, even if high amounts may make you sick
However ONLY at night is Melatonin good because constant use of Melatonin decreases how much your body produces naturally but that is aftera long time of using it that's why I would only recommend it on bad night's because casual use won't affect you.

And using it in the day throws your melatonin production out of whack.

So yeah I know what I'm talking about I just didn't feel like getting into detail.

And medications don't even cure your problems they cure the symptoms that's why people stay sick and keep buying because medicine makes them feel better but in the end they need more.

This all ties to food too but I don't feel like getting into that big discussion right now. lol

Melatonin isn't actually a sleep aid. It just helps regulate your circadian cycles. You sleep cycle can be effected by several things including visual stimuli like TV or computer screens, light-dark cycles, and the concentration of adenosine in your body. Uh... my physiology is a bit rusty from last year. But, IIRC adenosine bind to receptors in your central nervous system that promote "tiredness", I can't remember the technical term. Anyway, if the adenosine activity in the CNS is inhibited your body produces dopamine and glutamine which both increase your activity levels. Where was I going with this... Oh yeah, just taking melatonin isn't a quick fix. If other biological processes are off in your body melatonin won't help much. Go see a doctor.

Random fact: Caffeine binds to the same receptors as adenosine. *******.

also, another good way to go to sleep

Turn on awesome music, LOUD music
such as

Slayer, Mastodon, All That Remains, Trivium, Lacuna Coil, Parkway Drive, Chimaira, Dimmu Borgir, and Fear Factory

all of those bands help knock me out ;-)

EDIT: My ways of falling asleep are probably way different than everybody elses

but i only use these if i can't sleep at all

and oh yeah, i hate the tiniest bit of light when i'm trying to sleep

I got so happy when I got a full night's sleep, and then last night I only got 3 1/2 hours.... :(

Btw, "Nightmare Mode", if you ever experience it (heaven forbid), will be the worst experience of your life. It's like walking around with your eyes closed and your head full of cotton.

ugh... I can't even imagine doing that.

I think after a few days without sleep you begin to hallucinate

The longest I've stayed up was close to three days... I think I was just shy of the full 72 hours. It was sososo bad, especially because I love sleeping. (Waking up and realizing you have more time to sleep is the best feeling in the world.)

By the day after my second no-sleep night, I could swear I heard people calling my name when no one was around. I mean, that's happened to me on occasion before when some random noise sounds like my name, but I distinctly remember it being more frequent. Freakyyyy.

I dunno, I love it, personally.

My bed just feels so much comfier & warmer when I'm in that half-sleep state.... going back to sleep is just better that way. For me, anyway. I fully accept that this could just be a weird quirk of mine.

I totally love just lounging in bed after waking up! It's the best thing ever on days that you have absolutely nothing to do.

Like I said, it is perfectly normal for it to take an hour or two to actually fall asleep, its when it takes 5 is when it's bad. And it's also natural to wake up four to five times every night. By the time everyone's 40 their doing it. People often look at it as a problem because they weren't used to it before and seek help and go on medication. But the best thing to do is not get any medication. Ad this greatly depresses the amount of REM you get during your nights sleep.

 Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

Cortisone/cortisol is also a therapy used for various things and it too is produced naturally in the body; that does not make it harmless. TSH is a naturally produced hormone that is administered as treatment and can be harmful if too much is taken. Same with insulin and epinephrine.

There isn't even a known overdose amount for Melatonin, even if high amounts may make you sick
You CAN overdose on melatonin, make no mistake. Overdose of melatonin can cause seizures, disorientation, hypothermia and loss of balance; it can also cause clotting problems in people taking blood thinners and can interact with antidepressants.

This a big blanket statement. Some meds are designed to treat the root of the problem (antibiotics, to name one type). Some meds are designed to treat symptoms, not the root of the problem, until the problem subsides on its own. Some meds treat symptoms for chronic problems that never subside. Whichever way you slice it, you can't really take a shot at medication because it does what it's supposed to do.

Marijuana works well aside from it being illegal. If you want a legal solution, do a lot of excercise in the late afternoon.

This is correct. Make sure it's late AFTERNOON and not into the late evening or night.

People tend to believe that its a good idea to exercise right before bed because it makes you tired. What this will is bring your heart rate up making it difficult to go to sleep.
