OK, so there's this apparent 'prophecy' that the world will end on 23rd December 2012, IIRC it's because that's when the Mayan calendar ends. Obviously that's a load of horse manure, but perhaps this supposed 'prophecy' could cause suffering in the future?

Think about it. There are people out there who actually believe that stuff, right? Well, who's to say that they won't end up committing atrocities involving murder and terrorism on that day? From their point of view, it would simply be bringing about the inevitable earlier, or 'fufilling the prophecy' or something like that? Could this potentially even spread to the biggest mass genocide since the Holocaust? It may seem unlikely, but I wouldn't say it's impossible.

Basically what I'm saying is, although it almost certainly won't be the end of the world, perhaps people who believe that it will be will try to bring about the destruction themselves, killing people in the process. Should we prepare for this possibility?

Therefore... I suggest buying all the supplies you can and empty all supermarkets and bunker down for a few months, for the sole purpose of giving lulz to future generations.

Fun fact, most of the predicted doomsdays in 2012 were set in 2012 because, wait for it. Most other ones were in 2012 and they thought well it makes sense for it to occur then. And then the proof that it will happen is that all those things were predicted in the same year. Gotta love circular logic.

Also I have faith in the rational part of humanity (ie police and army if things get really rough) to protect us from a few nutjobs.

Mayans actually didn't predict the apocalypse in 2012. Their calendar just flips over, like ours goes from December to January. After that, everything else falls flat because of what Nixernator said.

But about the OP, I don't think that will happen. There might be a small increase in violence but there's been so many predicted apocalypses before that most people know they never come true.

Because the average person around here has such easy access to firearms... I don't know what the laws on firearms are in USA, but around here practically no one owns a gun.

I remember a guy predicted a flood in 100 years (it was the 1800s at the time). And the guy wasn't any scientist, just someone looking for attention.
The day he predicted it, people were in their canoes ready for the flood.

This could happen.

People aren't going to wish for the death of others on this day, they'll be looking for release on themselves.

I predict that this will be the event that brings back the world economy back to its former glory.

I predict mass suicides, causing large job openings, large cuts in the unemployment rate, and a job market in favor of the worker. The mass suicides will cause people to rethink much of the world, and we can also expect some large amount of peace to happen.

2012, the rise of the proletariat.

Who knows what people will do. They can get pretty crazy when the mood takes them. I'm kind of excited for the big day because, at least according to the history channel, the Mayans based their calendar around various astronomical events. The one that signifies the rolling over of their calendar in 2012 was the perfect alignment of the Earth, Sun, and center of the galaxy. When the sun rises on the big day, the center of the galaxy will be directly behind it. Now, if that's true, it's totally awesome, and worth looking forward to. Just gotta hope that some mobs don't kill us out of fear or something idiotic like that.

Don't worry, you're in the UK. That would only happen in America.
I'm not usually offended, and I'll try not to say anything past this post, but that was kind of stupid. I hate generalizations. Experiments were done to test the obedience of Americans (on the subject of obedience in Germany relating to the holocaust), and they were found just as obedient. More countries followed the same path.

The problem is the true "humanity", not a single country. So don't go pointing fingers to those in the same boat you're in.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to address possible sarcasm. If so, good show.

Mountain_tiger, 2012 is a bunch of bull****, I think you've come to this conclusion already. IMO, a human's religion or ideas or intuition is always based off of the need for knowledge. We always rationalize things.

But this backfires, because of what you said. Regardless, you would have to be both hostile and a believer. Most of those who believe in 2012 are going to have a barbecue or go to family out of state. There might be riots, there might be some death toll, but you're not going to see much.

/is not saying he's completely factual. This is my best logical guess.

It's in the Second Amendment to the US constitution. Everyone has the right to bear arms.

Not everyone who does, however, makes good judgment calls.

Hence the reasoning behind this statement:

Don't worry, you're in the UK. That would only happen in America.
Yes, we like guns.

Debatable. Especially considering the wording of the 2nd amendment. To bare arms is to act as a soldier. Its a common misconception along with the 'pursuit of happiness' clause, which simply means the right to own land.

We're gun-crazy. But how else are you gonna keep your government in line?
That's just wrong in so many ways.
Find me a successful armed rebellion against a modernized country, or explain to me how the hunting rifles of a civilian is going to stop the armies supplies? Keep in mind, the UN does not recognize violent revolutions as legitimate ones, so you can not expect any aid.

*sigh*

The whole fuss about the Mayan calendar ending is irrelevant; it's a circle. It doesn't end. When it reaches the end of one cycle it starts a new one. No doomsday or "age of enlightenment" or anything.

Now can we please stop dreaming about 2012?

Anthony, this is rumored that people just took out words. There is no proof that there were actuall specific predictions.

1) I was being facetious.

2) The U.S. doesn't care what the UN thinks. (No, really, I'm being serious there.)

3) Define "modernized." The communist revolution in China happened in modern times.

4) Let's not get into a gun debate and derail the thread. I was joking.

No really terrible things happened the first time the world ended in 2000, and I don't think this Apocalypse will cause people to flip out any more than that one did.

I'm pretty sure he's saying that people won't go ****ing crazy and murder others. People will still look out for themselves and loved ones, however, so if things like these pop up and there's even the slightest chance that it's true, you can bet your *** that people are going to be trying every desperate thing they can think of to keep themselves alive.

As for me, I think I'm just going to use this entire fiasco as a pick-up line the day before it's supposed to happen. I wonder how much *** I can get before people realize that they're not all going to die tomorrow.

I can't speak for Jam, but I knew a lot of computer geeks at the time who all said the same thing, "Nothing's gonna happen," before going back to their Counterstrike games.

I spent the night at a bonfire with a bunch of guys who all thought the world was gonna end. I told them all, "But it's already the year 2000 on the other side of the world and nothing happened there." But they didn't believe me.

In the end, the geeks were right.

My mother actually had to take 1 week to clean this virus out of their offices' system. It was that bad

The true prophecy doesn't reveal when Armageddon will occur, which is not what we are talking about here, apparently. :ohwell:

If the world ends, so be it. I'm not worried about it. I hate Earth anyway.

My father is one of those disaster/fate and destiny types, so he bought into Y2K hardcore. He would take old milk gallons and fill them with water all throughout 1999. By the end of the year, we had like 50 gallons of water in our closet (and that was after we threw away half of them because there just wasn't enough room for them).

On December 31st, I just sat at home and watched the ball drop. I remember turning to my brother after it hit midnight and saying, "I'm disappointed. The lights didn't even flicker!" Shortly after that, the rest of the water went to the garbage.

I don't think people would try to bring about the destruction themselves, but if enough people buy into it and believe that it's going to be their last day alive, they'll probably do whatever they can to live it to its fullest. Which could include anarchy and destruction, but it could just be doing stupid things.

That's the worst I see coming out of this.

I certainly don't see any good coming out of it, though. Some wild apocalypse theory isn't going to fix the economy and bring world peace about.

Lmao.

I love how many things Nostradamus was supposed to say. You know what, I read his main works as well as academic literature on him, and no, he didn't predict 9/11, nor anything else. He always has been creditted by his followers AFTER these things happened, and his texts are so vague that they can be mended with pretty much every catastrophe.
Also, this:

I can never fathom how people can take the 2012 doomsday seriously when:

1) The Mayans believe that life was circular. Not beginning to end
2) The Mayans didn't even predict THEIR OWN demise

It was my understanding that the Mayans predicted December 21, 2012 as a day of drastic planetary change, not necessarily a bad or good change.

Edit: Also lol at them making a movie out of it, clearly they dont think its going to happen. It would have been better if they released the movie on December 12, 2012.
