No, really. I'm just being sarcastic here.

Sometimes I get so tired of majorities that I'd rather rip my own face off like Red Skull did in Captain America - The First Avenger. Stupidity, ignorance and conformity is sometimes things that mix too well together. I don't claim to be different or unique, it's just a way to generalize. I've been an avid rap listener since my very few years of elementary school and have gotten to know artists people of my age did not even know. They didn't bother, it was all Eminem and 50 Cents to them. I actually bothered digging up old school rappers (i.e. Gangstarr/MC Guru, Wu Tang Clan, Immortal Technique, etc.)

Throughout the years, I've gotten to know underground rappers before they went mainstream. A few examples are: Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco, Wale, etc. (Even rappers that never went mainstream, like Shing02.)

And recently, an acquaintance wrote on Facebook (lolfb) that he saw Lupe Fiasco leaving the stage and walking out in the crowd, without anybody knowing. At first, I wrote: 'Well damn, *****'s lucky to have seen him in person!', while thinking of when did he ever listen to rap and he replied with: 'Well, I would've preferred seeing Eminem.' And then it striked me as obvious, I had forgotten that Lupe had gotten recognition from this guy due to L@sers. Some people agreed with him and I went out of my way to taunt them and say: 'Lupe > Eminem'. I admit that I prefer Lupe, as he raps about more global stuff like the ugly truth of Society. And another acquaintance goes out of his way to write: 'Wow, I can't believe you said that. But eh, it's down to people's opinion I guess :p.'

Knowing him pretty well in high school, I know that he doesn't listen to any rap other than what plays on radio, he listens to frickin' Electro Pop ****. I also know that he's a guy that likes to imply things because he's a ****ing *****. What he meant was: 'Man, you're an idiot. Your preferences in rap are ****.' But quite frankly, I'm just getting very tired of people talking like they know their **** when they don't. Not because they know ONE single album that they know the artist's discography entirely. I was an Eminem listener back in the days too and he wasn't bad. Even now he isn't bad, just terribly overrated. I don't mind people having their own opinions but some people speak out of ignorance and speak it as facts, they d**kride the most recognized artists of the moment and turn to the darkside when a switch of popularity happens. It's annoying and dumb as hell, I just wish people would thinkin' with their anus and actually use their brains.

tl;dr - I like rap and know about it. People that barely listen to even mainstream rap start talking **** like they know their stuff. And it makes me >=(

You know, this is exactly what a hipster sounds like:

More to the point though: how does another person's passing interest in rap have any influence on you? Actually, the more fans there are (casual or not), the better for you and rap in general.

I know more about rap than you #getatme

But anyway who cares? Let them listen to what they want to listen to. I feel similarly sometimes but other people's ignorance really doesn't affect me so I just let it go.

I was the exact same way when it came to metal music. I listen to rap too, but while doing so, I try to avoid the mainstream stuff because I'm sure it's the same with Metal music. The good stuff is underground. Sadly, my stuff may be mainstream in your view because you've got a history with rap while I've only been into it for about about a year or so, minus a few artists.

Lol @ Wiz Khalifa being judged only by that one song.

Radio**** in this thread.

My music is too underground, you wouldn't understand.

How about you just listen to the **** you like and stop giving a **** about **** that doesn't actually have to affect you, yeah? I mean of all the stupid **** people do that one could ***** about, this is pretty tame!

The people you're describing here are called posers. I didn't read the full post so I have no idea what this has to do with being a hipster, though. Regardless, finding people who barely know anything about a certain subject but act like they're the authority on it is very annoying regardless of what your thoughts are on mainstream media.

Oh my god quoted for so much truth.

People that pretend to know about something when they really don't is indeed obnoxious and I understand where you're coming from, but look at it from the other person's side, too; I don't think very many people have a drive or interest in looking deep into the library of every single artist they encounter. I go into depth with my music, sometimes to a ridiculous amount, but there's so much music out there that it's impossible to look into everything.

Furthermore, he may be judging Lupe Fiasco based on his mainstream stuff while his older stuff might be better, but...if he was introduced to Lupe Fiasco through his new, mainstream stuff, and wasn't impressed by it, why the hell would he be inclined to look at his older stuff? If I'm not impressed with what I've heard from a particular artist, I don't usually decide to try listening to more of their stuff. The only time I do is if someone I know suggests them, in which case I'll listen to a few more of their songs. If that still doesn't impress me, that's generally where I stop.

I fully understand where you're coming from, but there's a point where you have to accept that people won't always have all of the facts before they form an opinion on something. Maybe you want to argue that they should, but everyone's entitled to an opinion. If I don't know everything about something on which I'm expressing an opinion, I generally make that known, but I don't refrain from forming an opinion entirely.

And even if you don't like that, there's always the fact that people are stupid, they're going to do stupid ****.

I was actually half-considering writing a blog about the whole hipster vs. mainstream thing in music and may follow through with that, though I feel like everyone will yell at me because I have a ***** with both sides and yet agree with both sides too. Oh well, what's the fun in blogging if you don't get yelled at?

This.
The more you try and act how offended you are that mainstream music is popular, the more mainstream the idea that "I'm a hipster" becomes. Hipsters are nothing original anymore, they never were. Hipster music is as mainstream as mainstream music, if that makes sense.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9siqJAT8uA popped into my head. Posting for OP :awesome:

But seriously though, who cares what others listen to. To each their own, just call everyone ignorant if that helps.

I listened to a bit of Lupe but couldn't really get into his style. Although I do enjoy a few tracks, Kick Push obviously, He said she said, The Instrumental, Dumb it Down,
His new stuff Words I never said and Show goes on are pretty decent too.

I agree. Mainstream music is all ****. Then they have the balls to insult the real stuff.

I like how he believes it takes balls to insult what he claims is 'real' stuff. It makes sense til you put a single minutes worth of ****ing thought into it.

Yeah, because everything that's popular must automatically be ****, and anything that's not popular is automatically "real" music.

Hint, don't try to act like there's an objective side in a completely subjective manner like music. Listen to Falcon's advice and just listen to what you want to listen to instead of *****ing about what other people like.

Yeah, honestly there's no 'real' stuff. There's no such thing as 'fake' music, if by 'real' music he means music he likes, then listen to your 'real' music all you want and shut up.

@people: Insulting music you don't like is no different from other people insulting this 'real' music.

Well, I'd argue Lady Gaga is pretty ****ing fake when she sings about how she was 'born' this way loooooool. Funny because she totally fabricated that image, like there's more than enough proof that she did.

Didn't expect this many replies, I'm impressed. I actually hate hipsters, as they are even more obnoxious than brainless mainstream followers. It's a trend and they pretend it's 'different', it's just as mainstream as, well, mainstream.

People's opinion don't have influence on me. It just gets annoying most of the time.

lol eminem is wayyy better than BLACKNYELLOWBLACKNYELLOWBLACKNYELLOWBLACKNYELLOW anways
This is what I call ignorance. I was talking about Lupe Fiasco anyway, what does it have to do with Wiz Khalifa?

I actually do listen to mainstream music, hell, I listen to everything but people just don't get the concept of knowing what they're talking about before posting up ****. This is quoted for the truth, you win +10 points dude.

I listen to electro pop.
It's okay. I was referring to the fact that the guy knew absolutely nothing about rap and started talking ****. I do like a few electro pop songs... Just not many.

@Falcon: AND I'M BLACK YO, AND I'M BLACK YO. You're ****ing awesome haha.

@Firus: Glad you understand. And I understand your point entirely too.

This.

QFT.

I don't agree with you now. You really shouldn't bash mainstream, that makes you the same as them.

Except for the fact that if it wasn't for mainstream music your indie music wouldn't exist at all.

Frankly, most indie music I've heard is pretty mediocre anyway.
This is true. While I do listen to some indie music, very few are actually good. They purposely make very weird songs just to sound 'different'. And most of them have really bad vocals that it makes babies cry.

I listen to Nicki Minaj. :awesome:

And I'm in love with this girl:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCGCQMWXLWg&feature=BFa&list=PL9298B99345B19C41&index=4

But she won't rap in a language I know. :c

More to the point though: how does another person's passing interest in rap have any influence on you? Actually, the more fans there are (casual or not), the better for you and rap in general.
It's an emotional knee-jerk reaction. At least for me. I know I don't want to care, but then I do anyway. Kind of sucks, actually.

The only logical reason I can think of to care is because the majority influences culture. So if the majority prefers one type of sound, then they have market power as consumers, and the music industry will keep churning out product to suit them. That could influence all music across the board.

But at the same time, that's just bound to happen anyway. So, it makes more sense to just support the stuff you like and stop worrying about the rest.

Except for the fact that if it wasn't for mainstream music your indie music wouldn't exist at all.
Well, mainstream borrows quite a bit from the underground, and I think it borrows from indie too. The mainstream is an industry, and there's too much money involved for the producers to take too many risks. So they play it safe, but then they need creativity, which they find in the underground and re-manufacture into something more palatable for the mainstream audience.

According to a "reliable source" that's how The Killers got made. /someone else's opinion

Reminds me of those cool guyz on Youtube that post a copy n' paste comment similar to this one on music videos:

You say: "Mainstream" artist
I say: -insert artist here-
You say: "Mainstream" artist #2

Post this on other videos so that people know what REAL music is

---

It's something similar to that. What's funny is that they're being just as ignorant as those same people that say those artists they listed aren't "real" music. It's also pretty common for people to plug in their favorite artist =p

aren't indie and underground the same thing?
Almost, except "indie" usually doesn't get attached to the hip hop scene. Also, "indie rock" is a separate genre by itself, and it doesn't include punk, hardcore, or hip hop or anything else.

Spelt listens to mainstream artists, such as PARAMORE and KE$HA so feel free to ignore how common he is.
I can never tell is Kesha is for real or just trolling.
