I've been playing against my friend who has a pretty sick Marth, and it's gotta be one of the most intricate matchups I've ever played. That matchup is basically who can space better.

That match up is so weird for me. A perfectly spaced ftilt for Ike puts him in the perfect spacing for Marth's fsmash so I've given up on that move almost entirely in that match up. Right now my mind set with it is to bait out an attack and then punish with QD grab and aggro garbage. I tend to do my best when at my most aggressive. I make less mistakes there.

I'm still learning the matchup, but I try to keep him in the air as much as possible because of Marth's ability to kill around like 60% if you goof

Me and Amazerommu did this match-up last tournament. I like this match-up a lot, especially when we both got ourselves into a silly Counter war. Its just fun to be able to outright kill each other and have so much dash dancing mind-games to deal with. You mess up as either and that grab could mean death. I love it!

Ike gets so much cooler the better, faster, and more technical you get with him. Getting fthrow chains that combo into kills is the coolest thing ever. I still haven't gotten Metroid's fthrow > QD > bair combo but I have gotten fthrow > QD > reverse grab fthrow > reverse grab fthrow> reverse grab dthrow > bair. It was on a Yoshi.

a tip for the Marth match up. When marth is revocerying from way below the ledge and is about to Up-B to grab the ledge you can do your dair next to the ledge and it will go through it to meteor him. this requires timing and spacing. If the marth has the option to up above the ledge you and sees you nearing it he may just go for a hit.

It seems like the meta for Ike is moving towards cool and flashy movements. Eruption is the coolest thing ever and i'm totally going to work on incorporating wavebounced eruption spikes into my style.

Yeah, when I play Ike (for fun, sorry guys D: ) I try to limit QD and go for normal SHFFL approaches and spacing/dash dancing because people expect QD spam. Like, Fair spacing then randomly QD -> JC Grab and from there go ham.

Then I go for random SH Eruptions, miss completely and eat every smash ever :awesome:

I haven't actually played someone that went complete rushdown yet so that's influencing my advice.

Yeah, when I play Ike (for fun
Well there's your problem. What I do when playing fast aggressive characters is just rely on Ike's great range instead of his power(the tip hit box isn't that much weaker than the hilt anyways) and then I turn the aggression around when they fall for a good bait.

So now that Clash Tournaments have put up their PM tier list, how do you guys feel about Ike's placement?

Feels a little high to be honest; I feel like Ike is better than ~50% of the cast, but not quite in the upper 33% of the cast. I personally think Mewtwo, Sonic, Wario, Sheik, and ZSS have better match-up spreads than Ike does.

I will always maintain that Ike's match-up spread looks the most even out of all the characters. If it's not 50-50, it
s 55:45 and it's not 60:40 against more than two characters. I don't what that spells to you, but he is solid mid tier and that is fine. He's oodles more viable than Brawl, capable of destroying in the right hands and a very well designed and fair character.

Also CTier list is bull.

I think Ike's ability to capitalize helps him out tremendously, especially in matchups where he struggles so much in the neutral. He has lots of ways to force the KO or put the opponent in a bad position, even if he can have a lot of trouble initiating that. I can't see PMBR making any other changes to him (maybe besides very slight buffs to Eruption?); Ike's in a really good spot.

By any chance, is there an Ike Skype group floating around?

I'm not an Ike main myself, but a friend of mine, who wants to get better with him would like to know.

Thanks in advance!

Hrm...a skype group huh? That'd helpful. We could have longer more in-depth conversations about match-ups, down to the play by plays. Who wants to try this?

Huh..

I thought there were Skype Groups for all PM Characters. Guess not.

But yeah, a Skype group would be very helpful imo.

G&W users have a Skype group and I'm pretty sure they're less common than Ike users lol, I don't see why we shouldn't have a Skype group. I don't sign on Skype very often though.

If you don't let Link set up projectiles and you make sure to get in his face and stay there it is a pretty even match up. Unlike other characters, Link's attacks tend to move at the same speed as yours so you don't feel like you are out matched some where like you do with characters like MetaKnight and Marth.

How do you guys feel about the Ike/Link matchup?
IMO it's a fun match-up; as Commander said, it's dependent on you getting in and preventing Link from walling you out. Full-hopping over projectiles and walling out approaches with retreating double-jump FAir/NAir are pretty good at protecting yourself and you can QD under projectiles if he tries to full-hop and throw bombs or if he angles grounded boomerang downward such that it ricochets above you. Ike can punish Link pretty hard once he gets a grab and he can also go really far out to edgeguard him thanks to FAir and walk-off DAir.

The Link match-up is pretty even from what I've played. Not sure if it's 50-50, but very doable.

What do you guys do to get out of shield pressure from somebody like a spacie or Lucas? I can still win against them because they're easy combo fodder, but once I'm in shield I'm basically forced to eat a good amount of damage if they don't mess up.

Out of shield... I honestly don't know. But I have had some success with CCing and using dtilt to stuff Lucas' approach

I don't think Ike really has good OoS options except for BAir OoS, but that requires your opponent to be behind you and it's easy to miss if they're not super tall. Honestly, you should avoid getting caught in shield as much as possible and, if you do get trapped, try rolling out of the way; it's not a good option per say, but if a spacie or Lucas is spamming tech skill, then it's kinda the best you can do.

can confirm Ike's OoS options suck. Grab is ok, but other than that up smash and up b are farrrrr too slow to be useable.

If you PS something I guess you can jab or something though.

What a shame that Brawl shields are so weak and feeble.

Here is the one rule about Ike dealing with shield pressure: Don't get stuck in shield pressure.
