Peach and link have already had items and they havent changed the game drastically at all. Diddy's little peanut poppers did not seem as if they were game changing. i dont think character items will have much effect at all.

Man, all of the people playing Yoshi at E for All don't know the first thing about Yoshi. Those demo videos are horrible. Usually they just stand around and charge f-smashes. I was kind of looking forward to seeing actual Yoshi gameplay. Does anyone know of some good Yoshi brawl videos? At this point, good would be Yoshi using more than just f-smash/u-smash/egg roll/down B...

As Gimpyfish explained in his "Reflections" thread (or whatever it's called), most people who played as Yoshi had a hard time getting past not having the DJC. Honestly, I can't blame them, it has been around for years and years. Four days isn't enough time to take the DJC from muscle memory.

Also, don't worry so much about items changing things in Brawl; between SSB64 and SSBM, the number of items increased somewhat, but we still don't play with them. And if you read anything Gimpyfish wrote, he constantly stresses the importance of not comparing Brawl and Melee. I dunno, maybe we should listen since we weren't actually there to play it (with the exception of Gabe and a few others)? :O

losing DJC upsets me *cries in corner*

on the other hand, it seems like it could bring about a few interesting combos that we couldn't do before, so I'm alright with it =) :yoshi:

Anyway, i have never been mush of a Yoshi fan, but the swaloing projectiles bit made me think...
Anyone remember that lame 10 in 1 game, wich had peach tossing food up into the air and youshi eating it. And when you got enough food in little yoshi, he made an egg, of wich hached a MINI YOSHI!

Swallow enough projectiles = MINI YOSHI?

just a thought, but it would be cool, having him run around the stage, like a yoshi that ate a poison mush. Posibaly a lvl3 comp AI?

I just played Yoshi in Brawl, and must say I am disappointed.

Things Yoshi can do in Melee that he can't in Brawl:
Double Jump Cancel
Double Jump Land
Wave Dash
L-cancel
Edge egg
Combo
Dash dance
Light Shield
Edge egg
and finally...
BE FUN TO PLAY.

I'm gonna need some serious convincing to play Yoshi in Brawl. Very. Serious. Convincing.

Wait what? You couldn't edge-egg? o.0 So much for increased recovery options :/

Don't forget his egg falls faster in the air so it's useless for recovery.

And the sad thing is, the most consistent thing I'm hearing from most of the people who've played Brawl is that Yoshi is pretty much crap this time around.

It reminds me kinda like what happened to Kirby in the transition from 64 to Melee.... except they made a kinda bad character worse, rather than turning top tier into crap.

I'll still try out Yoshi, but my hopes aren't too high.

:yoshi: This isn't Melee 2.0, fellas! Just hang in there! >_<

He can't DJC? Well, make **** rising DJ combos!

He can't wavedash? Find your own movement glitch or learn how to play competitive Smash 64!

If he's not fun, then that's something that can't be overcome, but don't fret over the absence of Melee junk. I'll be honest when I say that one of the best ways to get familiar with Brawl right now is to play lots of high-level Smash 64 where you have limited techniques and then work up from there in Brawl to find your own techniques you can abuse.

THIS IS NOT MELEE 2.0

I know this isn't Melee 2.0 but honestly we're going to have to be playing really hard to find something new for Yoshi. As of now it doesn't look too good compared to other characters.

Maybe I'm being too pessimistic. I dunno - I haven't touched the game yet. From what I'm hearing, the only reliable combo Yoshi has is bair + forward smash, but I recall doing that numerous times during E4A.

Without DJC we're going to be stuck doing rising aerials or shorthops most of the time now, eh.

:yoshi: Welcome to being a groundbreaker. Enjoy your stay; you'll be here for a while.

But in all honesty, I'm not picking fights. I just think we've had it on easy mode for a while because we've had people like Bringer, Svampen, Gabe, Fumi, and Unrefined make most of what is the common Melee Yoshi, and they did it for us mostly. We've all got a fresh start here and no one person's going to really do the work for the rest of us this time around, to be perfectly honest. I think this is a great exercise for our community to put our (very large and extraordinarily cute) noses to the grindstone and make this character come to life. Look at how many characters in Melee just failed because their communities got lazy. We're very fortunate to have had our dedicated group of players and a great community to go along with them, so I think we deserve to not just drop the ball on this one.

My two cents.

Pardon if this is overly...pushy? I find I'm getting more and more agitated as people are making very hasty judgements about something that is more or less completely up in the air as far as competitiveness is concerned.

P.S. - After re-reading this, I want to make clear that I'm not calling people "traitors" if they don't "stick to the virtuous path," because I think it carries that tone somewhat. All I'm saying is we shouldn't just bail out for an easier and possibly less rewarding alternative when most of us don't even have the game yet (NoA NTSC may very well be different from NoJ NTSC and PAL could be a whole nother ****, on the real).

Looking back now, I probably was being too pessimistic. Well, that and I was a little irked at the changes done to Yoshi myself.

I should shut up now before I make myself look stupid, since I honestly haven't played the full game yet though. I can't possibly come up with any solid impressions yet...

:yoshi: I completely understand what you mean, dude.

Actually, I may seriously not play Yoshi since they have neither Cookies nor Creme colors in there. I think I made a post in early '07 about me quitting if those colors were not included, hahaha. I may have to actually stand by my word this time, LOL.

P.S. - I've asked D1 to take a look at some of the stuff I've learned about Yoshi in Brawl and combine it with any information he has and present it to you in his own words if he'd like to. Maybe there are some things you guys haven't learned yet that may convince you of the Way of the Yosh.

I'm committed to the stance that PAL will never actually come out, with the way Nintendo of Europe is acting.

I'll try Yoshi again when I get the game, but until that time I will be playing casual and fun characters that I don't get ***** with so that I can still enjoy myself.

- Edge eggs might be possible if you turn off the pressing up to jump option, but if that's the case then they will be pretty easy.

WE WILL SEE HOW IT PANS OUT THEN.

:yoshi: PAL will come out.

Maybe.

But yeah, give it some time. Like I said, if you're not having fun, then there's not much that can be done.

Bringer, we're having an Ike v. yourfavoritecharacter match when you get PAL.

BRING IT!

Just another day.
I stay by my main always. If he's made bad, then i'll make him better. I don't know about some of you people, but I am already seeing some nast combos I can pull with the new him (no offense if you believe this offends you).

I played Brawl a bit more. Yoshi can combo, and isn't too bad at it. His up-tilt is a bit more like his melee up-air in terms of power, and his f-tilt seems to hit upwards more with less power. Against Mic's Charizard I managed to do a up-tilt to up-air to DJC (through his d-air) up-air up-air combo. Considering that last time I played I had trouble landing combos with anyone, this is good news.

I have yet to experiment properly with his grab, because I have been playing Sonic a bit. Always been a Sonic fan and he is pretty fun. >_> But that aside, Yoshi's grab seems shorter now. It's strange that they would change that though. Maybe I'm just comparing to the distance some of his other moves have now.

Yoshi is kind of fun again!

Also, I can edge egg. It's awesome, cos edge tosses cancel your double jump velocity properly. The only problem is that in Brawl it takes longer to let go of the edge to do a ledgehop, so it's less likely that this will be an invincibility strategy. It's nice to hope though.

I couldn't combo with Yoshi's grab, which was a disappointment. Neutral B seems to hold them in the egg longer even if you hit them. Forward B is still a waste and it can no longer help you recover. F-air doesn't always spike, sometimes it hits away like Doc's f-air does. B-air is pretty hard to combo into a finisher with, but if they DI wrong then it's possible.

*Information overload*

I'm playing more on Sunday, I'll let you know my observations sometime during next week. (In between work :()

Hm...I don't buy it. The whole "Yoshi sucks now" argument seems too...I dunno, biased? I've seen plenty of Yoshi videos, and despite everyone claiming he's the worst character in the game, he actually wins the majority of his matches.

When you start looking at what he doesn't have anymore, you stop being able to see the forest for the trees, so to speak.

It just seems like everyone is overthinking this. The Jigglypuff forums are still optimistic despite the fact that I haven't seen a Jigglypuff win in Brawl yet.
