How does Melee or Smash Bros in general stack up against other fighters?

I don't mean to start a flame war, but I also frequent another gaming forum where Smash Brothers was brought up and I'm getting posts like these:

fake *** fighting game lmao, play a real competitive game
I know I'll probably be negged for this, but if any fighter game were to be considered the "CoD' of fighters this would be it. The game is really fun, I still play with my cousins time to time but the skill gap isn't as big as other fighters.
And I want to rip my hair out.

Is it possible to compare skills gaps across the different titles? I think melee has a HUGE skill gap. Thoughts?

UPDATE: **** just got real in the aforementioned thread. Posted the "So You Think Melee is Fast vid" and received a:

"ok, i tried to be nice. plz keep your ph@ggot game out of this thread"

You sure they aren't talking about barlw?

If not, then they're just being idiots. Melee is just as valid as any other competitive fighter. If they think the skill gap is small, then they should explain the ridiculously consistent placings and stock disparities from one level to another.

Except for those of us that actually play other fighters. But yeah, Smash bros wasn't really designed to be a fighter, melee just turned out to be perfect. Some people don't realize the depth of these games compared to other fighters, I guess.

im pretty sure a thread like this, or three, have been made before.

no one from other fighting communities truly understand the depth and intricacies of smash, not that i blame them. smash, originally, was produced to be a party game. items, "fun" stages, etc... were implemented for this reason. on the surface, its a very shallow game designed for purely fun and not for competitive purposes.

obviously, we all know better. i played sf4 competitively for a short period and i understand how that could be viewed as extremely competitive. there are some characters that you have to be frame perfect to pull of combos, combos that have little to no margin of error (gen comes into mind, specifically).

anyways, i think bones said it best.

We are just as ignorant about the games they play as they are about the games we play (Melee).
Or we're not. You don't have to make an equivalency argument to pacify anyone. I think a lot of people on Smashboards are willing to concede that it takes a high level of skill to play Street Fighter/etc competitively, and there's some percentage on the other side that feels the same way. SF2 and SF4 are next on my list to Melee.

But to answer your actual question, no, it is almost impossible to compare skill levels across fighting games with completely different systems. Melee to Brawl is somewhat doable, given the same basic system, but when you're dealing with Smash, you're invoking analog controls (the vastly underrated piece to Melee that most people neglect to remember), a king-of-the-hill kill system, stage variance, and DI'able combos. None of these things are in other fighting games, and they have their own complexities that aren't in Melee. It might as well be it's own genre.

Also, as was mentioned earlier, it's also a little silly to claim a limited "skill gap" when you have consistent placings.

DONT FEED THE TROLLS. Seriously, if this is their honest opinion on Melee, they're just being ignorant, for gods sake, the original arcade Donkey Kong and Mario game has a huge skill gap.... And if they're trolling, they feed off negative feedback, which we give them consistently

I'm actually a competitive street fighter player who just made the decision to play smash like two months ago. I wouldn't normally post because I don't like being vocal but this thread could use someone with a unique perspective. From what I can tell smash definitely tournament worthy, I just doubt it's on the level of like sf3ts or arcade st. I really don't want to breed hostility, that's just my opinion.

It goes both ways, I sometimes hear people who play smash saying how traditional fighters "aren't as deep because they have set combos" (actual quote lol) or "aren't as fast" etc.

Then you have the people who aren't silly and give games respect where they're due, or don't make an opinion because they don't have much experience in their non-native game. -_-

The two systems aren't comparable at all imo. Comparing skill gaps and game depth between fighters is extremely subjective to each individual and relies heavily on preference.

More importantly, why would other's perspective on melee be a problem? If you enjoy playing smash, you shouldn't be worrying about whether other communities think the game is 'legit.'

People who say melee isn't competitive aren't usually even close to competitive level at their own game.

Ignore the trolls, their opinions will never be valid.

I just figured because this is a site dedicated to smash brothers that every post in this thread would be made to crap on traditional fighters. I wasn't expecting everyone to be so objective.

Just so everyone's on the same page I should come right and say that sumo is 1000 times more manly than boxing.

I'd prefer to just be respectful of others and what they choose to play.

If they like SF and co. so be it and I hope they enjoy it. I mean even if I hate certain games, I dislike MvC2, then I don't like them but I won't bring the hate to other people over it.

Fortunately, Smashboards is pretty good overall reading the forums on this. Shoryken and co no so much, at least from the threads I read over there.

basically heres my understanding of how it breaks down

people on forums: laugh at other fighting games

people irl: realize that other fighting games are just as "deep" as their own

there's really nothing to worry about, the internet will always be the internet

i've tried a lot of fighting games, the only ones i really like are melee and guilty gear. those are the only fighting games sick enough to keep my interest for years. SF is pretty LAME in my eyes but thats just me.

The Smash community probably takes a dump on its own series more than it actually craps on the other fighting communities (Melee to Brawl rivalry lol). I definitely see more hate for Smash from other fighting communities than hate for other fighting games from the smash community.

^that

As I see Melee community members rag on other communities, I see other community members rag on Melee (and other communities). Stupid people are going to stay stupid ****; every game community has some awesome other people that it's infinately more rewarding to pay attention to.

That's because most Melee players have played traditional fighting games, but most traditional fighting game players have not played Melee.
