It's weird. If I'm really angry chess doesn't work well because I just can't focus, but if I'm not I just sort of lose myself in the game. It also works well when I'm just feeling down. I usually play correspondence chess so I don't have to constantly be at the board either. I can take however long I'd like thinking of my next move and I don't have to commit myself to sitting there for a long time.Usually by playing video games, and/or going outside.
And @ Overload: I play chess, but for some reason it never helped me relieve stress, probably because you have to concentrate too much, and sit still for a long time with almost no movement.
Well, it's hard for anyone to focus when they are angry. And I don't play chess when I'm depressed, cuz I'll probably just drop a pawn or something, and then just completely give up on the game, and resign. I don't play correspondence, unfortunetaly, only OTB, where you often don't have that much time.It's weird.
