Congrats on the formal confirmation! Glad to see many people realized that you can't judge a character by how a bad CPU plays them.
I'm really hoping that 3DS port of Xenoblade makes it over here so I will finally have no excuses to not play it.

Okay, so. . . That trailer was excellent. It looked good, it sounded good, it showed off enough for us to get an idea of what Shulk will be all about (and I love it, mind you), Shulk, Riki and Dunban in HD(!), Gaur Plains in HD (with what appears to be a night-and-day cycle which means more potential OST variety!), swimsuit Shulk in HD and the ending tease of Metal Face as a boss / stage boss! To top it all off, a Xenoblade Chronicles re-release for New Nintendo 3DS confirmed (for Japan)? Definitely buying once it inevitably heads to the states! Xenoblade Chronicles is now getting much more exposure from Nintendo, and that's a really good thing. They've an incredible game and what looks to be an incredible series in their hands now with the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles X. The exposure of Shulk in SSBIV, and now the exposure that will be Xenoblade Chronicles on the NN3DS (New Nintendo 3DS) are only good for Nintendo as a company, Monolith Soft as developers, XC, XCX and the fans.

With all of that now being said and out of the way, I'm looking forward to using Shulk on a high competitive level come SSBIV. I intend to be on top with Shulk in both my state and region as I've previously accomplished (in the earlier times of SSBB), and even more. Looking forward to discussing / viewing discussion about competitive Shulk in his (now live) character boards with everyone!

So I put this together for the Shulk users as a reference guide.
New [List of Monado Arts]
翔 (Jump): higher jumps, lower defense. Best used for juggling airborne characters, or getting a star KO at the top of the screen.
疾 (Speed): faster movement, weaker attacks. Best used when you need to close the distance, especially on larger stages.
盾(Shield): higher defense, slower movement. Best used when you're at high percentage to keep yourself on the stage for an extended amount of time.
斬(Buster): stronger attacks, weaker launch ability. Best used at the start of a match so you can quickly rack up damage and keep the opponents close to you without the fear of knocking them out of your attack range. Probably good at combos.
撃(Smash): Stronger launch ability, weaker attacks, lower defense against launching. Best used when the opponent has high damage, thus making it easier to land a finisher.

Congrats, Shulk-supporters!!! I've been neutral-positive toward Shulk, mainly because I just had a hard time imagining him alongside the other Smashers (which is something Sakurai actually gave a gracious nod to in the Miiverse post). Now that he's really in, though, he looks awesome. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles, and I'm gonna love all of its glorious content in SSB! (and Riki for the freaking win!)

this is just a thought i've been walking with really but, what if

what if, certain assist trophies and alt costumes are unlockable this time around? i know in brawl a whole bunch of assist trophies were unlocked after getting a certain achievement. but what if this time around they are unlocked after a certain playtime, achievement or points you've collected all together? a bit like mario kart 8 with it's coing system for vehicles and parts

like you start off with a riki assist ( maybe after you've unlocked shulk ) and if xenoblade gets another one ryan can be unlocked as one

Shulk was confirmed! Xenoblade was so awesome and the (soon to be) series needs way more recognition and this is a fantastic first step combined with Xenoblade 3DS!

Anyways, definitely glad to see that Shulk's playable, even if the leak ruined the surprise somewhat. Still haven't gotten far enough in Xenoblade Chronicles to know who the orange nopon (Riki?) is, but it's amazing to see Shulk in HD as opposed to a video that looks like it was recorded with a camera that was powered by a potato battery.

...Despite Sakurai's retweet I figured there wouldn't be any Smash news since it was 3DS only and Japan only...Man I was wrong. SHULK CONFIRMED MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THIS HAHAHAHA! Despite me knowing he was in the game thanks to the hints and the leak, nothing could of prepared me for that trailer. Shulk looks awesome, Guar Plains has a day/night cycle, Dunban and Riki are apart of your Final Smash (I have no doubt that Reyn, Sharla, Melia and Fiora will be in there as well, just that it alternates). Not a fan of bosses but when Metal Face said Monado boy I giggled. Also I kept saying when they announce Shulk they'll also announce a Wii U rerelease...I was kind of right. Also, how did the West not get a Direct with all this news? Is this punishment for the leak? Doesn't matter, my most requested character is finally in the game! Think about it, Shulk, the main character in a game that had trouble releasing outside Japan, is now in the same game as Mario, Donkey Kong, Sonic and Mega Man! Shulkamania is running wild, brother! Anyway, let's party bronados!
