As much as I want Geno, Banjo I feel is the only other character who deserves a comeback more than anyone. Considering what happened to him and most of the other Rare characters after Microsoft acquired them all those years ago, he deserves it more than any other major character I can think of.

Super Mario RPG is always in videos/lists/articles talking about the SNES and their most popular and influential games. It's been acknowledged by Nintendo numerous times, especially when it was added to the SNES Classic (even when other SNES games missed out). It was the first Mario RPG, which brought us the Paper Mario series and the Mario and Luigi series, and Geno and his popularity and fans have been acknowledged by Sakurai and, once again, Nintendo. Both Geno and SMRPG have received (and still receive) tons of fan art, and the game is constantly streamed by popular YouTubers like Chuggaconroy, NintendoCapriSun, and Vinesauce and just regular gamers.

It's not an overstatement at all to say that SMRPG had and still has a significant impact on Nintendo and Square Enix's history and the fans of the companies.

Honestly, SMRPG may be a great game that is beloved by many, but in terms of the amount of ripples Geno himself has made in gaming history, it's... still rather small. Sure, he's loved and he has a cult following, but I'm not about to put him on a higher pedestal than he deserves because of my bias. He really isn't iconic from an objective standpoint.

By all means, Geno is loved, a fan favorite, and comes from a charming, wonderful gaming that spawned the Mario RPGs as we know them today, but he isn't this huge phenomenon.

Personally I’m hoping Brave is a first party/complete surprise like Joker rather than any currently debated character ie, Erdrick, Sora, Banjo, Steve... Gimmie a shocker Nintendo!

I wonder when people will stop pretending SMRPG was some obscure game that no one knows about. It's been rereleased way more often than Banjo Kazooie. And pitting these characters against each other makes no sense. Both are boomer favorites and Geno has certainly been more demanded for Smash than Banjo has. I also wonder when people will stop thinking it's a crazy idea that a character gets added based of of fan demand, of which Geno has more of than just about any character left in the running. There's something to say about a characters case to be playable when a large part of his legacy is a massive group of people who have begged for him to be in for a decade and a half and he's consistently recognized or talked about by the game's director.

This character is basically the poster boy for smash speculation hype, but that doesn't matter because if I take a random poll on the street he isn't as recognizable to soccer mom sally. The people that own this game and the people that basically advertise for nintendo for free by streaming on twitch pretty much universally want Geno and Banjo, so add them both.

It's not an overstatement to say it's a beloved game by many people and was specifically developed as a important game between Square Enix and Nintendo. But it is to say Geno himself is as well known to all SNES fans as Banjo to N64 fans. He's beloved for a certain group of people, but I will emphasize that one's love for Super Mario RPG does not necessarily translate to love for Geno or an interest in seeing him in Smash.

I do feel like we overestimate the importance of the SNES Classic's role in all of this a bit though. Yes, it's on the SNES Classic, but the only real notable absences on that system are Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3, and Chrono Trigger. Otherwise it more or less reads like a top 20 SNES games list realized on a nostalgia device and their absence reads more as suspicious (or cheap) than a testament to the other games that made it on there. Plus the system was positioned, as the NES Classic before it, entirely as a nostalgia device to make profits during the transition between the NES and SNES era. They had to go to Square Enix for several games and it seems like they just picked all the major ones easily available and moved on. I just don't have much faith that they put too much thought into the system or really cared how they handled it beyond making it an appealing product that then performed exactly as they wanted it too in times of uncertain profit. It's just never stuck out to me as all that important in any conversation. But it is another appearance of Super Mario RPG at least.

Well of course he's not a gaming icon, but he's not some obscure, forgotten character either, as shown by acknowledgement from Nintendo and fans and what he represents.

Part of it's significance of being on the SNES Classic is, yes, they had to go through Square Enix, but they went through Square to get SMRPG instead of/without Chrono Trigger or any DQ games. For me at least, that's pretty telling of SMRPG's importance to them.

And, at first, Geno may not seem like he's done anything huge for gaming, but it's the fact that he represents something greater - the Mario RPGs and, again, Nintendo and Square's partnership. When you piece together what SMRPG left behind and how it's always at the very least mentioned when discussing the SNES and that Geno represents the game, he's a lot more important than at first glance.

SSBU's new 'ballot' thing came out with the results! I honestly expected Geno would be a lot lower, considering he's a spirit and many people take that as a deconfirmation, but I was happily proven wrong. LOTS of votes for Banjo and Sora, though.
I am very happy with Banjo's and Steve's placements, and Geno's place is very good as well.

The "unpopular" picks shall soon rise up with B-K taking them under their wing.

Mainly Kazooie's because Banjo doesn't have any wings.

Heh. Heh. Heeheehee.

I am only saddened by the lack of Rabbids among it. Rest are nice.

Of course, I didn't expect some of my favorite picks to be nearly as popular(Fulgore and Brian).

I feel like I'm one of the very few who wouldn't mind the Rabbids. Before M+R, I probably would have scoffed at them, but I've been endeared to the little guys by now.

Rabbid Peach for Smash.

I liked 'em before the Mario + Rabbids game. They're unique buggers that would make for some very fun gameplay. Don't even need a special one Just a regular Rabbid alone is sweet.

How the heck is Steve so high? :O
At least Shantae and Geno are still doin' really good :)
Steve's a huge gaming icon and actually rather popular. Smashboards is just a vocal bit of the entire base.

So it's not remotely surprising at all.

It's a pretty good list, full of tons of notable characters.

My blocky son will one day win at EVO.
The only thing I hope in the case that steve would somehow make it in is that they treat him as an avatar character too, like villager, and there's quite a few other alts to choose from :)

Still probably wouldn't play them overly much tho. But at least a bit if they have that.

Steve will become my new training dummy that I can always take my frustrations out on.

And him taking Banjo's chance of becoming the first Microsoft character in Smash means I will have a lot of frustrations to take out on him

I 100% expect Alex to take up half of his alts. like Olimar and Alph hopefully Herobrine would take two, though.

I don't think they would use other skins, though, unless they take player skins since it's a big community game, and I wouldn't mind CaptainSparklez coming with Fallen Kingdom and this:

I would go with some custom skins, a bit like villager. And naturally there'd be some female ones.
There's already some to choose from.

eh.

I wouldn't want Story Mode in Smash, but I guess it'd be fine if they were just fit into the usual model. Ender Dragon would be cool. Alex is female, too, well, I think? She was initially created as a unisexual skin but she looks a lot like a girl and is usually referred to as one since most people see her as such.

It'd actually be pretty weird for Story Mode to get in, as none of them are avatars at all, and I personally just want Steve, Alex, and Herobrine in one slot.

I was just listing possibilities. They could easily go with either all custom or a bunch of known characters. I still think it wouldn't be weird to have a mix of both, but I havent really played much minecraft so i dunno.

If one of his skins is Banjo I think that might literally put me over the edge to not want to play Ultimate anymore. That's not something I am going to want to be reminded of every time I launch the game.

I....might have made my self to emotionally invested in this game.....

I think the best approach, if not just different Steve and Alex skins (whether it's colors or the skins from the console editions) and Herobrine, would be some skins based on mobs or popular player skins (as long as no copyright issues) if that can be arranged since it's very community-based; maybe whoever the guys in the Dungeons trailer are, too, though I don't know if they're avatars or not please let me play as Steve, Mojang...he's on all of your game's box-art covers, on your website, officially named in Bedrock Edition, and has appeared in other games, dang it...

I'm sure that wouldn't happen; it'd be pretty weird, I wouldn't expect a Master Chief skin either.

It wont matter too much to me anyway, so whatever would please minecraft fans. Tho hopefully like i talked about there'd be at least 1 female skin in case the playstyle would be fun ;p

Also, you're 3 posts away from being a smash hero. gratz in advance ;)

Already brought this up in the Social Thread and it likely applies to stuff outside of Nintendo as well, but it is still worth noting due to the video update from the Smash Bros. Youtube channel.

Oh, no.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no.

Please.

I'll live if Steve gets in, but do NOT let Minecraft Story Mode into Smash.

Somethin' BAAAD's gonna happen if that ugly-as-sin game gets anywhere near my Smash Bros.

BACK, YOU BEAST

no need to worry, I think Alex is female.

well, uh...

She might not have been at first, but not male either, just unisexual (if my memory is correct?)...but, everyone calls Alex a girl, and I feel as if Mojang just went with it as it seems they may have; so it may be official, especially since they have Steve anyway and Alex looks very feminine. There was also something in Lego Magazine 2016 saying Steve was Alex's boyfriend and said what they were, Steve a miner, etc. and Alex an adventurer and whatnot this was on the Minecraft wiki.

and thank you :)

Daniel Ahmad. He's a financial analyst that mainly covers the Southeast Asia and Chinese video game markets. He is also a prominent industry insider that has a lot of connections in various gaming industries, but he doesn't tend to be public about what he knows. Of course, when he does go public with such info, his track record is pretty nigh-spotless.

personally Story Mode is fine and kinda cool (I've only watched youtubers play it back when it was still new), but they look weird compared to the nice and smooth blocks in normal Minecraft plus now we have Minecraft: Dungeons staying true to the original's style while still having more-complex animation with expressions.

I find it kinda funny how most people dislike any media that seems to give Minecraft characters...actual character.
It's really just Story Mode and some weird animations...though tbh Story Mode was met with a lot of positivity as well.

Some animations, like the ones from ElementAnimation and CaptainSparklez's song parodies, are usually met positively. People just tend to agree that Story Mode feels somewhat off or prefer the simplistic blocks, even if they liked the game and the characters.

also I realize we're getting very off-topic so let's talk about Geno vs. Steve or anyone else I guess?

I feel like a lot of the Steve votes were ironic and/or based on him being highly rumored. Also interesting to see that even with him being highly rumored/expected Erdrick didn’t make it into any top spots. Really happy with Geno’s placement though. Tbh it’s very similar to many polls that came out between Sm4sh and SSBU so it’s cool to see he didn’t really slide as far as popularity goes even with him being a spirit and getting so much hate.
