Yes: https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/1...blematic-of-smash-bros-ultimates-dlc-approach
Reggie talks about picking Joker:
“It's emblematic of the approach that Mr. Sakurai and the team are taking with the DLC,” Fils-Aime told IGN. “He wants characters that are unique, different, to bring them into the Smash Bros. environment. So it's going to be tremendously exciting.”
About the DLC: “Mr. Sakurai, he's not only a student of Nintendo franchises, and obviously he's had his hand in a few, but he's a student of video games from a total perspective,” Fils-Aime said. “And so he's been the driver in really thinking about what type of character coming into Super Smash Bros Ultimate would bring just a whole different level of fun and enjoyment for the player. That's been the approach. That's the thinking."
I have a feeling Sakurai and Nintendo also have to play the "Both companies must agree upon approval" rule. Because when Sakurai goes to a third-party company that holds a character they own, SEGA for example, he chooses a character they legally own, like Sonic. When Sakurai agrees upon it, SEGA has to as well. It took them a few months in order to do so in Brawl, hence why it was delayed. So perhaps Sakurai and Nintendo both have to agree upon the DLC characters. We can't forget that this is Sakurai's game, not Nintendo's, so the creator/director of the game should also have the authority of selecting the characters he wants. And that makes it pretty clear to me it's either a list or they are choosing it at the same time. They both have a huge say in it. I like it. It also might help Nintendo learn more about pleasing their fanbase like Sakurai tries to. Sadly some characters are still pretty unlikely(mostly obscure ones, as Nintendo is still removing games from the US version of the Console Minis, kind of proving they are out of touch at times), but it still helps. Nintendo is pretty clearly agreeing that important to their own system isn't a big deal when they helped choose Joker. A single appearance for a character heavily associated with the PlayStation is a notable point here.
And yes, Joker was quite an interesting choice. Sakurai likes Persona 5 and Nintendo could've approved the DLC suggestion, so they went to SEGA in order to buy Joker's rights to use him in the game. This could've been chosen because:
A) They had plans for Persona 5 R to come to the Switch, and there's a rumor going around that Persona 5 R is coming to the Switch.
B) Sakurai likes Persona 5 and thought a character from their franchise would be great in Smash, so both Sakurai and Nintendo agreed on having Joker in the game as the first DLC character.
I'd like Belome to be the main villain in a Mario RPG game. We have no clue of this thing's backstory, like, is it supposed to be a spirit or an ancient being? Belome always creeped the hell out of me when I was little, but he would definitely be an interesting antagonist of the series, probably on par with Dimentio. Even after he's defeated, he's still alive but warps or fades away to go eat... I think he's immortal. If we had a SMRPG x M&L crossover, I'd so love to see Croco and Popple team up.Hey fellow geno fans I’m sry this is off topic again but if anyone here has taken apart an original wii, specifically the disc drive, could you please pm me, i need help and possibly specific pictures of a disassembled drive...
To keep it back on topic, other than geno or mallow, if Nintendo got the full rights to everything in smrpg, what are some other original characters from it you’d like to see revived?
Personally I’d like booster, Valentina, Croco and belome to show up more.
Geno holds the "Sakurai bias" pass. lolOf course, there's also Geno, whom Sakurai specifically stated would be perfect for Smash.
