Oh Sakurai, Sakurai... SAKURAI.
It's time to throw in more wood to this fire.
A while back, I recall some bringing up on this thread some event tournaments that usually came around the time a new fighter was introduced to Ultimate. Well, let us take a look at what went down this year.
- January 16th, 2020 = Byleth character reveal as Challenger Pack #5
- January 28th, 2020 = Byleth release date
- February 1-2, 2020 = Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North American Online Open February 2020
- February 7th - 10th = "Some Training, Professor?" in-game SSBU event tournament (Byleth's themed tournament)
- May 30th - June 21st, 2020 = Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North American Online Open May 2020
- June 22nd, 2020 = Min Min's character reveal as Challenger Pack #6
- June 29th, 2020 = Min Min release date
- July 3rd - 6th, 2020 = "Embrace Victory!" in-game SSBU event tournament (Min Min's themed tournament)
- September 26th, 2020 = Nintendo VS Challenge Cup September 2020 (SSBU tournament)
- October 1st, 2020 = Steve character reveal as Challenger Pack #7
- October 13th, 2020 = Steve release date
- October 23rd - 26th, 2020 = "Tools of the Trade" in-game SSBU event tournament (Steve's themed tournament)
Notice the pattern between mainline sponsored Nintendo Smash tournaments, character reveals and release dates, and character-themed in-game event tournaments? Now let's look at what's coming up.
- December 12th, 2020 = Nintendo VS Challenge Cup December 2020 (contrary to September's, this one is Super Mario-themed)
- December 11th - 13th, 2020 = "Beware of Mushrooms" (Google translation) in-game SSBU event tournament (???? themed tournament)
Now then, by observing the pattern within 2020, the "themed" tournaments have usually been held after a new character (i.e. the character after which the event tournament is themed after) has been added to the game. This could lead to one of two possible outcomes; either (a) CP 8 will be revealed and
gasp ... released before this week is over?!, or (b) CP 8, contrary to this year's Challenger Packs thus far, will be revealed and released a few days after both tournaments conclude. Hmm... so far the expectation had been to keep an eye if scenario (b) panned out since there was only one tournament to look forward to. However, with this new tournament happening within the same weekend, and with a tentative (translated) title as that... it's just way too on the nose. TGA 2020... might... have actually something in store?!
Dang, the timing.
EDIT: Anyone else getting a pre-E3 2019 Banjo-forced-denial-delirium vibes right now? Cause I sure am with this unholy build up.
