On one hand, an Arms character kills the “no already-represented worlds” argument.
That was broken with Byleth, unless you're claiming "Three Houses" isn't "Fire Emblem".

I just listened to it. He did not say anything about it being "truly extra". The only one I believe has said that is Fatman.
Watched it again, yeah sorry not the video, but the interview then I believe. He mentioned something along the lines of this wasn't planned and it's because they just had a lot of special final characters to get in before Ultimate is over (with development).

So the first part of DLC of Pokemon Sw/Sh is releasing in June... Urushifu is truly getting in, won¨t he -_-
https://twitter.com/NintendoEurope/status/1243199889158426626
Please no. Just pick a character people WANT, not some new dumb not-Pangoro garbage.

Okay stop with the "ARMS 2" character crap. They literally showed a screen of all the ARMS characters in the first one. It's obviously going to be one of them. No ARMS 2 has even been announced.
So why didn't they just announce the character? They just said an ARMS character.

This is also not a shill pick in any way. Arms came out years ago.
Of course they put out a demo for the game after the character was announced. People are going to want to get familiar with the source material.
What about people unfamiliar with Joker, BK, and Terry? DQ11 and FE3H had demos, but the other 3 had nothing available for free (without piracy/emulation), so... Moot point.

People don't understand the difference between an "advertisement character" and characters from a major Nintendo IP that just happen to be new. An ARMS character is no more of a shill pick than Shulk in Smash 4.
Ehhh... If they're gonna start pushing ARMS now, this is more of a shill pick because I don't remember people really clamoring for an ARMS rep. Advertising character would be taking advantage of a fan-requested rep (e.g., if they were making an SMRPG 2 and picked Geno to advertise for the game, but he's also heavily-requested). A shill pick is taking someone that wasn't all that requested and slapping them in because oh look new DLC or a game for that series (e.g., Byleth with 3H).

But why ? Why kick Spring Man out , and design someone else that will litteraly do the same job as him ? It would be like removing Ryu from Street Fighter 2 , and adding "Mr. Karate man" , that will do the same things as Ryu , but with a new design just to shake things up and nothing else , when they already established Ryu's name !
Actually they did do that in the first 2 versions of Street Fighter Three, but i see your point, it's like not having Scorpion in MK

There's no way this could be a Bowser Junior/Hero situation. Anyone who says that has obviously not played arms. The characters are all very very different. There's more to the game than just the extendable arms.

I don't think it will be an arms 2 (if that even exists) character because it seems the attention is only arms 1 characters (and only the 15 characters only)
Yeh now that i think about it i pretty much got scared since i saw other people talk about arms 2, i pretty much changed my mind so i dont think its gonna be an arms 2 character, most likely it'll be min-min

While my point about "leftover money" still stand ( It's been one year and a half since Ultimate release , people still following Smash news are Nintendo fans and Smash fans, and less the general crowd) I doubt it'll be shill pick galore.
Due to the complicated current times we're having , Spring Man might have not been supposed to be Fighter 6 for all we know. Or maybe they didn't cared much about the order of things.

Now , I want to explain why I'm so confident in Spring Man :

ARMS is an arena fighter. And ARMS is focused on it's core gameplay , like any game like this. Now , ARMS main gameplay is pretty peculiar , and every character show how they all approach these mechanics. However , you need a character to explain these wild mechanics , hence why poster boy/girl are needed.
Not all fighting games have attacks with such high range and commitements , so you need your straightforward character that rely on the core basics on the game to teach you everything. However , these characters focus on fundamentals , and reflect perfectly the level of knowledge someone has on the game.

In the context of ARMS , the game , Spring Man may feel generic. But in the context of Smash , he absolutely isn't. His design is simple , but nobody can punch you from accross half of Final Destination from what I'm aware of. This is a pretty wild design choice , and is already very hard to balance , Sakurai said it himself. Give him too much range and not enough recovery frames , and he is busted , give him too many recovery frames , and every move he do is more commital than Ganondorf's up-tilt.
So , if instead of Spring Man , you pick someone else from the franchise , you have to respect the base core gameplay , on top of how this specific character approach this core fighting style. This would make balancing a nightmare... And would make people think that "yeah , that's how every character approach the fighting in this game" while it's not. It wouldn't represent the core of the Fighting style of ARMS.

"But he's an Assist Trophy , and a spirit , too !"

Well , Nintendo asked for an ARMS rep , and I doubt they bothered about that detail. An assist trophy is a a singular item out of like 60 , wich has a 1,5% of summoning the character you want. This isn't a traditional assist from a 3vs3 Fighting game , it's a funny item to provoke some chaos.
Furthermore , Chrom. Also , to show an example from a different game : Android 17 from FighterZ. Android 17 was a core part of Android 18 moveset , he represent almost all of her special moves. Remove 17 , and 18 pretty much has one super , one kienzan , and some okay normals. And despise that , Bandai Namco still decided to add Android 17 as a stand alone character.

"But they would prefer to pick a fan-favorite from ARMS , like Twintelle !"

I already addressed this point before , but : Sakurai can take some liberties , and add those fan-favorites as alts. (Also , for proportions issues : Morton is supposed to be 3 times bigger than Bower Jr. , yet he's the same size as Junior in Smash. He can tweak the height of characters , and he can find a solution for Twintelle.)

"But they could announce the main character of ARMS 2 instead !"

Yes , we could get a sequel. However , the core gameplay will remain the same , they will just build on top of it , making it even more complex. So you still need Spring Man to teach the basics to new and returning players. Yes , they will expend on the cast. And they could add ARMS 2 characters as alts ! (One of the biggest reasons I think we don't have more details)

"But the main character of ARMS 2 could be someone else !"

"But ARMS Flopped ! They might want to reboot some characters !"

ARMS didn't flopped. It sold more than 2 millions units , and for a new franchise , that's fantastic. The reason everyone think this : It released a week before Splatoon 2 , and got no updates. It wasn't because the characters were bland. It's because Nintendo made a fighting game focused on it's core gameplay , and didn't bothered to support it like they did with Splatoon and Smash.
All I was saying that pushing Arms like this all the sudden, within a timeframe that a sequel could be announced, does come off as a potential advertisement character. Especially when they don¨t want to mention WHO right now, be it a character from the potential sequel or first Arms (which begs the question, on why not tells us now then?)

The A is actually a T. IT'S TIME FOR T(e)RMS! (and Twintelle)

Also this. I still like my crazy idea of multiple echoes coming with the "main" character, but that's probably super unlikely.

People, don't you get the great thing of having an Arms rep?

That means spirits don't deconfirm!!!

It is great news for us!!!
Yeah this is big boy news for us. Also doesn't ARMS have an AT? Depending on who it is could kill 2 birds with one stone.

I don't get where this idea of Arms 2 comes from. Nintendo usually does one installment of a franchise per console. A fighting game like Arms would have continued receiving updates instead of doing a sequel on the same console.

But then again, doing a sequel as a sort of relaunch to the original game that failed does sound like a Nintendo move.

I'm not sure if a buy the theory that the 2nd Pass is leftover money. Smash is one of the best selling Switch games and the high sales of FP1 is what made them make another in the first place. I haven't seen anything from Sakurai that would imply the 2nd Pass has a smaller budget. All we know was that this a Nintendo made request similar to Byleth

I'm not brushing off the idea 100% but it's also worth taking to account that this a Mini Direct with more mild announcements. I don't know if it would be the place to showcase a huge character for the 2nd pass in the same way the Game Awards did for the 1st Pass. An ARMS character fits a Direct like this

Also consider, that they aren't dropping the character till June, which makes me think they could group it with a more bigger reveal to push the 2nd Pass more even if the first character is pretty mellow
Yeah, I can definitely see that. A 2nd character reveal in June that was initially planned to go at E3 before it was cancelled is still likely on the table.

I don't think it'll be a character from a supposed Arms sequel, I get Nintendo can be awfully blatant with when they shill things for Smash but they've never revealed a new character from a series and then announced said character to be in Smash right afterwards. Even characters like Isabelle, who had a new AC announced right after her reveal, had still been in New Leaf before hand. Also, if E3 2019 is anything to go by and we're getting 2 fighters, that likely puts FP6's reveal trailer near the beginning of the direct, which could mean a new Arms character would be revealed in their Smash trailer before actually being revealed for Arms 2 later in the presentation.
I think the actual reason for the character not getting shown off is:
a. It was a mini direct, they don't usually do full on big announcements like the new Smash character in them.
b. It's a character already in Arms 1 but has a bit of a design touch up in 2 that they used for Smash, so they're just holding off for now
c. It's a Hero situation where there's a buncha fighters in one and they may not all be ready yet. Sakurai did say he wanted to include 8 heros in Hero but time constraints made him bump it down to 4, but without the issue of 3rd party licensing, Sakurai was able to extend the reveal/release further. Though, Sakurai did seem to say FP6 was ready to show off in November so meh.

You can't be serious. Banjo and Joker literally don't have any games on switch. What game did you expect them to have a demo for? And Terry is 3rd party. Nintendo can't tell other companies what to do. Your argument is literally that since SNK didn't do a free demo when Terry was announced, the ARMS character is a shill pick. It's just a good business move okay? It doesn't make a character a shill just because they put out a demo with the announcement. The game is still 3 years old.

There certainly is more to it than that, but honestly I could see Sakurai meld arms, abilities and attributes (along with some other creative liberties) from multiple characters to create one moveset to represent ARMS as a whole. It wouldn't be the first time.

Withing 3 years of the original game, and not even on another console generation? Nintendo's main studios tend to like having one version of each game per system, with the exception of Hal (Who have had like 2 kirby games per mobile system) and Gamefreak (Pokemon is the CoD of Nintendo). Even super repetetive series, like the New Super Mario Brothers series had reasons for their secondary games per system (Celebrate the Year of Luigi, reusing unused Galaxy levels).

Yes that's true too.
I gotta say: An Arms character came as a real surprise and kinda turned all my expectations for season 2 upside-down.
Me too sort of. It did cross my mind that knowing Smash, there would be at least one character that would be mild and no one would expect, but I didn't expect it to be the first character. Not sure if that means more characters similar to this for the other 5, or if Nintendo just didn't wanna announce a huge character for a Mini Direct and they wanted to get this out of the way. The announcement raised so many questions. Guess it's time to count the days till June

Holy crow, people, some of you need to calm the hell down about the mentioning of a shill character. We don't know if there is going to be an ARMS 2 coming or not, but if the term is mentioned purely in conjecture, I don't see why people have to go so crazy in the opposite direction. Obviously ARMS came out years ago and the inclusion of one those characters is not inherently a shill. A shill would only be the case if it was specifically in promotion of an upcoming game. That said, ARMS only sold about 2 mil copies in three years. To my knowledge, it wasn't generally considered anywhere near the hit that Splatoon was and it concerns me as to the taste of FP2 when Nintendo is only following it's own self-promoting agenda. Granted, they have no obligation to heed the demands of the fans and it makes perfect business sense to cater to themselves. It just doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me that Geno is coming when the will of fans is seemingly ignored (at least for this next pass). Now, before the lynching begins, I'm not saying that the fans will definitely be ignored moving forward. We honestly don't know if Geno will be the B-K of FP2. I'm simply saying that a pick like this doesn't personally strike me as a good omen or a "Holy ****, I can't believe they made it!" feeling. More like a "Huh, guess Nintendo's gonna do Nintendo" feeling.

Yup , some characters like :ultness: and :ultlucas: have moves they can't even use in their original games , and are more here to represent their game/franchise as a whole.

So we'll just have Springman floating through the air with sparkles to slow down attacks, master mummy doing a bunch of extra mid air jumps, and a little robot dog following Ribbon girl around. Makes sense to me.

I thought Byleth would count, too, but others in the general thread thought they didn’t since FE:TH’s world is separate from the other games, so idk. Still the same franchise, though...

Thats true about the entire franchise though, while there are fan theories it's all the same world, said theiries tend to leave out Tellius and Magvel (Ike's games and Sacred Stones) because they don't fit in said theories.

I never said anything about mixing every character into one, but some characters could feasibly pool together a few moves. Obviously this wouldn't work with every Arms character, but they could grab a few and give us a sort of Hero situation with the characters with the most similar body types being alts of each other and their signature arms being used throughout a move set.

Having 2 Nintendo characters, with one of them being an advertisement inclusion and the second one likely being an advertisement back to back.. I argue that something is rotten in Denmark. Arms isn¨t exactly something big to open with after the ****storm Byleths inclusion caused. Especially when the character is (supposedly) revealed in June which just happens to be the same month that the Pokemon DLC is released

The question here is this then... Why not confirm him now?
ARMS isn't about one character - it's very much in an F-Zero situation where there's a character that people think of when they think of the game, but maybe isn't their favorite character, or the "main" character. But, unlike in F-Zero, we have characters with the same body type and attack method... I think there's no way we're not getting at least 4 characters in one, like with Hero. Really helps push along that 100 characters theory from a while back, too.

If they go with one ARMS character to represent the game, they're really missing an opportunity to "delight the fans", especially of ARMS.

My best guess is that they are technical complications.

I could see something like Spring Man being the main character , but having alts of characters from ARMS 2. It might seem like a small detail , but I'm fairly sure they wanted to announce what they were sure of.
It's the first time that they say " a character from a specific franchise is coming". And this game is a fighting game , typically the kind of games with fan favorites. So instead of saying "It's Spring Man" and every Twintelle , Min Min , Helix (ect) fans being a bit disapointed , they keep the little surprise until E3 : They reveal Spring Man , and we get a shot of 7 others ARMS characters as alts , like the Koopalings.

I saw someone else mentionning the pretty big gameplay differences some have , and I agree. Hence why I think Spring Man moveset will focus on the core basics , and they will pick characters with similar body weights and height to Spring Man. (Like Springtron or Ribbon Girl)
I could see these alts get different visuals effects tho , and each have a unique victory screen.

As to respecting the lore and what characters can or can't do... Ganondorf never used his smash sword in any Zelda game , Ness and Lucas use PSI powers they can't learn in their games , Fox and Falco weren't seen fighting on foot before Adventures and Assault , and Falcon moveset is litteraly made up just to represent F-Zero's nature.
Granted , those are older additions , and Sakurai usually respect the characters better... But it's Sakurai , he can strecth some stuff.

Given they didn't want to confirm who the ARMS rep was in this mini-direct, my guess is they're saving the big news for June with potentially a second reveal that is a huge request like Geno or some major character akin to Crash Bandicoot

They literally presented us with a list of the possible characters it could be. I'm telling you, it's 100% not a new character for a theoretical sequel. It's a character from the list they literally told us the character is from during the announcement.

Who says that the ARMS character has to be a new one in order to advertise a new game? I don't recall Icewolf ever saying that the ARMS character that's going to be revealed was going to be a new one.

"How is ARMS a shill pick when the game is 3 years old and didn't even perform that well?"

Right? It's not like throwing characters from a relatively underperforming franchise into Smash has ever paid off for Nintendo before. Fire Emblem's ascent in popularity and the inclusion of 200 Fire Emblem characters in Smash is pure coincidence.

Different character but the same results, basically:

-First party.
-Super likely to be a promotion of some kind.
-A choice that blindsided everyone.

It's not how I expected this to go down but I'll definitely take it if it's the death rattle of the "promotions can't happen" argument.

Btw dumb theory why they didn't show the character: They wanted to do a trailer for the reveal, probably not new CGI like Ridley, KKR, etc, but more akin to Isabelle/Terry/Byleth. But, due to the coronavirus, they couldn't finish it in time, so they'll have it ready by the June direct. Inb4 it's all the characters fighting over the envelope.

Assuming it is a promotion, this is the only thing I would have gotten right this entire time, lol. Next I should just keep saying "Geno's not getting in" so I'm proven wrong as usual.

They literally presented us with a list of the possible characters it could be. I'm telling you, it's 100% not a new character for a theoretical sequel. It's a character from the list they literally told us the character is from during the announcement.
Agree, it would be hella whack if it ends up being someone outside of those options
