Geno is the most likely, hands down. The stars are aligning. Neku is too obscure. Crono or Robo I just don't see as much as I'd love it. Erdrick is a possibility but again something in my gut is saying no. 2B isn't on a Nintendo platform. Lara Croft, maybe, but I doubt it. Bad fit. It's gotta be Geno!

Speaking of Geno, I've been refraining posting in this thread because my relationship with Geno and supporting him in Smash has been a little odd to say the least. After some deep thought, however, I'm joining the crowd and wholly support our star spirit!

When I was a kid, shortly after the release of Smash 64, I was obsessed. It was around this time that I discovered internet forums for the first time, and though it's not that impressive nowadays for a 9-or-so-year-old to be on the internet, it was wild to me. I found a forum called VGChat and it had a Smash Bros section. It's so funny to me to see people point at Brawl as the big groundswell for Geno supporters when I remember very clearly how many people wanted him in Melee before it was even called Melee (mostly because one of them also wanted my top pick, Marina Liteyears).

It's funny - at some point i somehow became a mod of the Smash Bros section of that forum. I was like 12. I logged on, realized I could edit posts, panicked, and never logged on again.

Anyway, even though I had played SMRPG, I was always a bigger Paper Mario fan. Geno was never on my list. He still isn't, really, but at the same time there's something about how fervent people were back then and how that's persisted even to this day that's made such a huge impact on me almost two decades later. It's easy for those who weren't around for that period of Smash fandom to see Geno as some kind of fringe bandwagon character or someone people supported just because Sakurai wanted him in Brawl or because he represents a forbidden fruit in the Square/Nintendo split, but that really just isn't the truth.

Geno getting in isn't a victory for me. But he's a victory for people like those on that forum from my childhood, or the friends I used to talk about videogames with on the playground. He's a victory for all of you in the thread who played and loved Super Mario RPG. He's a victory for those who dare to cling to hope. And for those reasons I can't NOT support his inclusion wholeheartedly.

This is his moment - your moment. I want to see all of you explode in happiness at his trailer, because frankly, you deserve it.

I know this is a silly, rambling post, but I had to say something. The passion and positivity here is inspiring, and I just wanted to let everyone know how much I love seeing it every time I log on.

Keep dreaming, everyone. I'll be there supporting you all from the sidelines!

Oh...Oh my god. I found someone who gets it, who understands, but in the same manner extends that support towards myself and others of a similar desire.

Sorry for being weird, but it's a strange satisfaction to see someone else extend the exact same mindset as yourself but in a way that bolsters you. I have said many a time I would trade in my want of Geno for 13-22 years if that meant Issac, B&K, SkullKid, Shantae, Bandana Dee, Rayman or any other character people wanted would make it in. It's just how I am: I'd rather others be happy than myself, which is weird but whatever, it's how I roll.

So if Neku or Marina are your most wanted for Ultimate, I hope they make it in.

Also, I support the fact that requests for Geno for Smash were coming in before Melee as I actually talked to a friend about it way back while playing Smash 64 back before the Gamecube even dropped. He didn't know who he was of course, but when I told him a bit about him he thought it would be cool but he still wanted Megaman more, and we kinda left it at that. Biased personal information I know, but if I was talking about Geno in Smash as a young kid then I know other people older than I was had to be as well. However, this was when the internet was still pretty young and rumors ran rampant: Mew under the truck was a still a thing, and I have no idea how far this one got, but the one we all heard and tried was Goku being in Smash 64 but you had to beat arcade mode on the hardest difficulty with Mario and no deaths or continues. Imagine the disappointment in that one, jeez.

I'm not sure about forums or anything back before the public had wide-spread access to DSL and was forced to use dial-up, nor anything about pre-launch Melee discussions, as by the time I had a Gamecube Melee had already been released (the main reason I told mom I had to have it) and I wasn't huge on the internet until like 2003 or so and spent most of that time playing flash games and later MySpace and online forum roleplaying. I think most people list pre-launch Brawl is because these discussions took place after the Snake reveal and the Brawl website was actually being updated with information and at a time when internet was more advanced and the 90's generation had grown a bit more to understand things better. I wish I could have been there during those times for speculation for Melee...*le sigh*

Sakurai didn't choose Cloud because of higher-ups though; Nintendo leaves the roster choices completely up to him, and he's already stated he went for Cloud because he was the most popular FF choice he was seeing. Square even tried to give him someone else instead.

I was actually on my way to a hotel on 9.13, and at the welcome desk, they were advertising some kind of membership plan for the casino in the hotel.
Guess what it was called.
Seven Stars.
We ended up getting Isabelle instead, but I swear to god, whatever weird deity my mom prays to every day is giving me a *wink wink nudge nudge* or something.
I don't know if it actually means anything. I'm pretty high off Tylenol right now.

Someone else who Verge is backing up as credible is also claiming there is another Square Enix character, and apparently a Minecraft rep (Possibly, neither know for sure, though they know Minecraft is represented in one way or another).

It kinda surprises me that they're willing to put their neck out like this without knowing anything for sure. (It's also annoying because the way people are talking about this you'd think Vergeben outright said Steve was in)

Especially since we already have third party series represented in Smash without playable characters. (Bomberman, Shovel Knight and Monster Hunter, presumably)

I think it's possible that the series being from a new third party company is informing their assumption that it's getting a playable character.

I'm not much into Final Fantasy so I didn't know about this, though MANY years ago I have read that Culex's theme was from a Final Fantasy... but I have never been able to find it (at the time, Youtube didn't even exist and I only had a 56k modem), so I took the conclusion that it wasn't from a Final Fantasy but only inspired by them. Apparently I was wrong I finally found it after so many years lol.

I played FF3 (DS), FF7 and a bit of FF9, never played FF4 nor any other game in the series, aside of Chocobo Racing if it counts.

It still kinda amazes me how memes became so common. Now there're local and regional levels of them. Every big show gets them. Almost everyone and their brother knows what they are. Times sure have changed.

I think they will use the full "Super Mario RPG" logo for Geno, arranged in a way that fits the other logos' proportions (maybe even only the RPG part if necessary, like in that leak).
Geno is not considered as a Mario character anymore (else they would have brought him back along with Mallow in the several Mario+Square games, Itadaki Street and those sport games), Super Mario RPG, despite being only 1 game, is considered its own thing.
Also, when they revealed the Geno costume for the Mii, they said "Super Smash Bros x Super Mario RPG" with the SMRPG logo, so...

If not this, they will probably find another iconic element of SMRPG and use it as a logo...maybe the 7 stars or something like this.
EDIT: maybe the silhouette of Bowser's castle with Exor on it.

Anyway I think those red things on Geno's head are his hair, made of curved paper, or fabric with some other material inside to keep them rigid... at least that's how I have always seen it

On 9/13, an hour before the Direct, if I remember correctly, I got an ad for a pizza place on my TV, guess what its name was: Geno’s Pizza; an actual restaurant that’s a few hours away from me in another state, it really is like the universe is trying to tell us something.

I always call him "Geno" with the Italian pronunciation (the e sounds different), but if they will actually use the English pronunciation in the localized version, he will sound more like "Gino" that's an Italian name.
Gino has several derivations and in some cases it's a shortened version of names ending with -gi or -gio.
Basically, Gino can be a shortened version for Luigi too XD
Also it would be silly as heck to hear "and the winner is... GINO" in Italian

Well, considering that here Isabelle is called "Fuffi" that's a generic name people usually give to real dogs...

I would rather not give Geno the Mario series mushroom, but his own logo and victory theme. DK, Yoshi, and Wario have their own. I think he should have a shooting star logo in homage of the logo background in the prologue when Exor arrives. That or a ring of stars like the star piece menu.
