Greetings guys. As pretty much everyone who follows smash knows by now, Genesis 2 is right around the corner... kinda lol. While it seems like a long ways away right now, days have that annoying tendancy of turning into weeks, weeks into months, and before you know it we're at July 15th.

Because we have over 10 months to prepare for the next Genesis, we in DBR are setting the bar much higher than we did for our previous event. We have quite a few new ideas and features that we are going to try to implement; some of which we can discuss generally, such as Television rentals to increase tournament efficiency, improve upon the technical aspect of the tournament (audio & display capabilities), catering services, etc... And some of the ideas will be held secret for a little while longer while we work out the logistics of it all.

In short though, the more that we hope to accomplish and introduce to Genesis 2, the pricier things become. So from next weekend on, we are going to be holding Fundraiser events for Genesis to deliver this tournament in the best possible manner.

Weekly / Biweekly Training Sessions!

Beginning next Saturday, Sept. 4th, and (depending on the reception from norcal) continuing either once a weekend or every other weekend, I will be hosting a Fundraiser Smashfest / Training Session at my home. There will be 3-4 setups already here (though if you want to make sure there's opportunity to play all the time, feel free to bring a setup with you as well lol); I'm aiming to have one hooked up to a livestream for fun, one hooked up to a VCR for those who might want to study some of their matches later on, and the other setup(s) for free play.

The timetable for each one will be pretty generous lol. Each session will stretch from 6pm to around dawn, so (especially if you're driving) feel free to drop by anytime between then. I *can* help out with rides to & from bart if necessary, so long as you guys are showing up relatively on-time, or if you're barting here with a couple other smashers, I can pick you up; I'm also taking donations for the "help refill Dan's gas tank" fund, but I won't be expecting anything lol.

The lo-down is this: it'll be an all-nighter smash fest here at my home, with at least a couple members from DBR availble to help you improve if you're looking for advice, or to simply smash the night away when there's not a tournament on the horizon. Of course in addition to this, it's also a fundraiser to help contribute to the best tournament franchise this side of the Mississippi :) There will be an "entry fee" for the night in the amount of $5. We may also stock some pizza & sodas to sell at a reasonable price, should anyone get hungry for it later on.

The only main point is that while I do live here, I don't own this home, so I will expect anybody attending to be on good behavior lol. I'm not going to be a prude about most stuff, but if I see anything like fighting, narcotics, booze, or catch you trying to swipe anything or recklessly brake stuff, I've got a 1-strike rule.ol. I'm only stating this as disclaimer as I know this community is better than to do stuff like that at someone else's home, just know that I won't have tolerance for it.

The continuation of this event will pretty much reside on it's popularity lol; we'll be trying to put on a decent showing for each Session as far as hospitality goes, and so long as these fundraisers are well-received we'll support them all the way to Genesis. I would prefer to limit these to about 15 non-DBR people per session max, so if you're interested just make a post, PM / call one of us, etc. I'll keep the names tallied further below for each session.

***The address is 5953 Cardinet Drive, Clayton CA. If you've ever been in the Concord area to Germ's or Boback's home, it's only about 10 minutes of intercity commute from there.***

Monthly Barbeques!

Once every 4-5 weeks on the weekend (we'll announce a date for each one well ahead of time) and as long as the weather's looking good, we'll be hosting a fundraising BBQ at either a local park, or here at my home should winter weather turn nasty again.

The price will be $15 a person for the day. We'll supply the beef, the side dishes, chips & dip, and drinks. Short of gourging yourself, you'll have free-range to whatever food you'd like, and be able to just chill with any & all smashers interested in enjoying a beautiful day at the park while also helping to contribute to the tournament fund.

In addition to the food you receive, each paying attendant will also receive a raffle ticket, which will be drawn towards the end of each BBQ (so long as we have at least a somewhat-decent turnout, say 10+ people). The winner of the raffle will receive free entry to Genesis 2 for both events of either Brawl or Melee!

We'll announce specifics of the When and Where of the first BBQ, but it will probably fall on a Saturday or Sunday around 3pm and lasting quite a while. As it is very necessary to know just how much food we'll need to bring, signups will also be taken for each BBQ prior to the event. No attendance limit on this one. =P

Casual Donations!
Interested in contributing to Genesis in addition to, or along with, these two activities? We will greatly appreciate donations towards Genesis in any & all denominations. We'll be keeping track of donations from each person between now and Genesis, and plan on structuring a Prize Pyramid of sorts to award our more generous smashers.

Prizes can range anywhere from a ticket for a free drink or snack from the concession stand once the tourney begins, to free Genesis-2 T-shirts or free entry to your favorite title's events. We'll also have a little something extra planned for the top donators once the tournament is concluded. =) I still need to draw up the pyramid a bit more accurately, but I'll have some prize tiers listed up in the near future.

I'll definitely go. Either Bart or drive. I'll most likely go with Falcomist cuz I know he'll go (regardless what he says).

This is amazing.

I strongly, STRONGLY recommend every smasher (beginner or veteran) to take advantage and support the weekly/biweekly training sessions. Perfect way to help anyone improve their game. And the 5$ entry fee goes straight to the funding for Genesis!

And I do agree with Brendan, it'd be pretty tight if Socal had weekly/biweekly organized Smashfests.

And the BBQ sounds hella legit too.

Good **** DBR!

haha

Real talk though, I'm genuinely supportive of these training sessions. A great way to help the community level up.

Whoa awesome. I should be able to attend some of these once I convince my parents that all nighters are ok.

we should have a MM rule

where if someone drops 5 on a mm it can get recorded + like 45 mins of guaranteed friendlies between the 2 people

that'd be boss

also i'm planning on coming to these :)

kinda silly to have to pay for the friendlies since we're already paying venue fee!

the mm doesn't contribute to anyone except the own players!

i'm not saying it's a terrible idea, but i just don't feel the need for the mm and the hour of friendlies to be grouped together; they're both great things, and there's no reason they can't be separate things for people who only want to partake in one or the other!

paying/bidding for playing time runs the risk of people not coming back. imagine if you make the trip, pay the fee/donate, but don't get to play for 45 min at a time

but if you bring a tv, even if you never rotate, you still effectively brought half a setup that wouldn't have been there if you didn't go!

Definitely lol, the more setups the merrier. Also, depending on the number of setups available compared to the # of people who show up, I'm a big fan of the 3-man rotation as it really keeps the smash up-time to a maximum without having to worry about never getting to play anyone else at the station. Ex.: If you have players A, B and C, then first A would play B, then B would play C, then C would play A. Any one player will get to play 2 matches in a row, then sit one out; no "winner stays" rule.

Of course there are the little things, like certain people growing attached to playing a TV full of certain other people. I'll try & come up with some general "rules" for friendly play during the sessions. Just some basic stuff to keep things fresh, or to help keep the mood chill. Think along the lines of "If you're going to call next at a new TV, try & find out what the rotation is first so you'd know where to join in, and only call next at least a match in advance."

And about $MMes, I don't mind if they occur here lol. So long as the two players call each other by their formal names and show the proper respect to one another! jk lol. If a couple guys want to do a $MM, yeah you're free to have it recorded on the vcr setup. Concerning that, too... while I'll try to have tapes recording on that setup during the night, I won't exactly be uploading 12 hours of raw footage to youtube every week lol, so if there's something like a money match or some really good matches you want to hang onto, just let one of us know what tape it's on and what the Time Code was when they occurred.

And thanks for all the support so far!

3 man sounds more consistent, rather than "winner stay". You get that break in between to freshen up, and at least pick up on things you didn't see previously.

But I'm just a scrub in Melee, so don't mind what I say.

You should go to help all the players of lesser skill get better!

I think everyone should consider this a day to help others of lesser and equal skill level grow as players (along with helping fund for Genesis 2) rather than just another smashfest. Rules and regulations might be necessary to help keep rotations of casual play interesting/healthy (i.e. prevent same people from playing each other over and over and stuff).

Of course, I'm sure the best way to prevent rotation hell on a single station is to contribute by smashers bringing more set ups!

probably not the most apropos place to ask, but

will the genesis staff be banning smashers with outstanding debts within the community from attending?

Even though it's pretty high in the pacwest forum right now, Bump for a modest amount of hype!

Also, bump with a date for the first BBQ in the thread title + updated 1st post with tentative attendees for the first Smash Session!

I will be thur on Saturday for most of the night. If anyone needs Link, Falco, Samus, Luigi practice/advice........ask Lucien lol. Nah I'm kidding, can I help with those, but Lucien is definately someone you want to talk to/play if your looking for any kind of advice and are serious about getting better. I've never met anyone that can point out your bad habits after one match.

But yeah, just know that we are not profiting personally from any of the donations. All the money we raise from these is going straight to Genesis, the more money we raise, the more awesome sh** we can do for Genesis 2. This includes everything Dan mentioned in the first post, helping out ticket/lodge costs for esteemed smashers from across the globe, and overall making Genesis twice as legit and professional as last time.

These are also here to improve the skill of Norcal overall. Norcal is already one of the fiercest and most skilled areas in the US as far as smash is concerned, but we feel that we can improve to much greater levels. Now that such big tournaments in our neighborhood like Don't Go Down There Jeff and Genesis 2 are around the corner, it's time to level up. I think there is a big difference between practicing and training, and it's time to train. Training is where you deeply examine your level of play, your strengths and your weeknesses, your match-ups, and your confidence level, not just playing by yourself in your room for hours on end.

So with all that said, see you guys on Saturday! come chill and have fun while improving your game at the same time.
