If the people you have is X and 2^4 < x < 2^5, you play 5 matches, not 4.

As I said, Swiss is done to only show a clear winner, which it does. everyone can play another match if need be. I however had a very hard time following your thread since you didn't clarify the amount of players (assumed there were 20 and advanced for a 5 man pool? huh??) and it just was weird. There will be more than 25 people for this tournament
Yes, you play 5 matches, except people who don't have the same record will be playing each other. Guaranteed.

Anyhow, to clarify, my previous post was meant to be an example. The number of pools/seeds is completely up in the air. The system I proposed would work with literally any number of people, as long as we have enough setups.

The more I think about it, the more I like the 4 man pools with 2 advancing. Double elimination for the top 8.

On a more important note, are we seriously only going to have the venue until 5? If so, I'm not coming. I want to be able to play all day, not just pool play and watching for a couple hours afterwards. Even with an optimal speed on ANY tournament system we do, it's still pretty unlikely that we can do everything within 6 hours. The doubles is assuredly going to start late, and the registration/payment alone will take at least a half hour.

Someone get me a definitive answer on the time we'll have ASAP.

Would rather have it at EoF's but idk, since other people have already planned on point, i guess marshfield is no go.

btw, eighteen spikes told me he was going to team with me for this.

i don't really care where it is, I just want to be able to do MN vs WI

>_>

There probably wont be time for MN vs WI.

MN would win anyways...

I think we should just bring a ****-ton of setups and do round robins. this way the noobs (such as myself, for instance) wouldn't be knocked out in 2 ****ed rounds, and everyone would have a fun time which *is* as i recall, the point of the tournament.
That's what I had just said in that earlier post, which LoneJedi so graciously shot down.

Now that I hear there's about a 6 set-up limit, I can use that for some figures... Going on what I've already found out, estimating 12 teams, 6 set ups is perfect for getting through a teams RR fast. With 12 teams, each team will be playing one other team at any given time, so there is effectively 6 pairs of teams; perfect for 6 set-ups. Given the number of possible combinations, it would take at least 6 "rounds" of matches (6 pairs fighting each other per round.) Assuming an average of 4 minutes per set, and 2.5 sets per match, that's about 10 minutes per match, equaling out to a maxium of one hour for a teams RR.

Of course, we're not all perfect, so there's going to need to be some leeway in there; allowing for that, I'd say that with 12 teams and 6 set ups a team RR could be finished in about an hour and a half.

I honestly don't understand CWolf's suggestion of the pools; I've never been introduced to them myself, but to me it seems like it would take more time out of the tournament... yet as I said since I don't understand it much (the term of swissing a pool escapes me) I won't comment on it other than this right here...

And as it sounds like the schedule is shaping up so far, do I detect a possiblity of a normal tournament at Game Cray/Game Exchange from 11-5(ish) then a slight relocation for WI v. MN battle?

If anyone has ever seen how they do (used to, at least) Halo tournaments for MLG, my system I proposed is almost identical.

Take results from previous competition, seed people. Put people into pools based upon rank. After pool play, reseed based upon pool play record and previous seeding (pool play record takes higher priority). After that, run a simple tournament.

Let's suppose that we have 6 pools, 2 advancing out of each.

After that, we run the tournament, with the top 8 being a double elimination.

So because we need to get to 8 people, we have #12 vs. #5, #11 vs. #6, #10 vs. #7, and #8 vs. #9.

The winners go in against the other 4 to form the final bracket, the losers are out of the tournament. Extremely simple after that.

EDIT: What's great about this system is that everyone is playing at least 3 "matches," and it actually is a very very effective way to deal with seeding and other issues. The more I think about it, the more I like this system.

It can easily be done with larger pools, it will just have to be slightly modified, or we'll have to have pool play last longer, with each player playing more games overall in the pool.

The only way I would like small (4-6) pools with top 2 advancing is if we take out and pre-seed the top 4/8 teams. It would mostly keep the pools from being redundant by removing a clear winner, take less time, and be a bit easier on the bracket.

Also I said I'd team with JS only if Ethan isn't going, and I haven't heard anything from him about this tournament for a week or two...

Guys, we don't need to talk about this anymore, Swiss is the best way. Do swiss, to determine top 16, with 4 of each seed 1-4. Everyone gets to play alot of matches, keeps it competative, and should only take us an hour to do swiss with enough set ups. if we can get teams down in 2 hours, 1 for swiss, and 2 for singles. We should be able to do it, with plenty of time for friendlies, and crews.

Yes, I'd say you should.

Worse case scenario, some people will have to leave their set-ups in their cars. But that would actually be the best case scenario, neh? :)

attention, i got 2 room at uwsp, both room plus together is enough for 20+ set up, each room have one prejection so we can do that as well.
i'm going to move the location to UWSP, i'll get the address in a bit
bring as many setup+power strip+extension cord as possible
i have the room reserve from 10am to 9 pm, which should be enough to finish the tourey in time if we got enough setups.

onething, everyone have to keep their voice down, if there is people who constantly yelling, i'll have to kick him out, which i don't want to do.

we should all thank roger for helping us getting the room @_@

Yes that will have to not be happening... although I don't even think with a megaphone any of us could get as loud as teflon...

hey lonejedi, either put out the ****ing mm or shut the **** up kid!
what was that from?

Jeesh...

JS has a big mouth. I don't do MM's, it's not how I roll, but I do some friendlies. I love how when MN trash talks, no one ca res, but when Lone does, everyone gets into a fit. Just to stir the pot. Lone>Yoshii. All in good fun?
