you will never be very good if you dont have enough confidence. i dont think melee is the kind of game you can get good at simply by playing it a long time and watching matches etc.
i would reccomend a recording device so you can look at where your character is moving, patterns ect.
try to keep up on water, sleep, exercise and practice
do those boring drills till your arms are dead
consistancy is very, very important. if you know you have a poor chance of executing anything do not attempt
practice and record over and over refining your di and matchup knowledge

Yeah man. You gotta make yourself learn these things. You have to believe in yourself or nothing will ever happen. I've only been playing Melee for about 9 months, and I got 3rd in my first tournament because I believed in myself, and practiced. Just keep at it, and you'll achieve what you're working for.

But if you don't know how to learn, how are you supposed to LEARN how to learn?

Just practice more, try harder, and learn more about the game.

Well maybe that's what he should be learning to do instead of practicing more and trying harder

If it's not natural for you to be able to evaluate how you're losing games, then you should devote some time in figuring out how you're losing and maybe you can make actual improvement

And 3.5 years isn't that long compared to how long some players have been playing

On a similar boat as you... Been playing Falco ever since I started. Started playing Fox like half a year ago and it's already ending up easier to fight some people.

Truth be told, Falco isn't an easy character like Fox. You can get better with Fox just by playing more, getting more tech skill, getting faster, getting more aggro, but that doesn't work with Falco. What I've found is that to get better with Falco, you need to think a lot harder as to why you lose games etc. In general with Falco, you have to be scared of the stuff that's not there, not the stuff that's there. Ie. Spacing laser properly, something I didn't realize was so frikkin important and hard but so visually miniscule that I overlooked it a lot.

Ie. With Fox you can blindly practice one style and get pretty good. With Falco you'll hit a roadblock and then you gotta learn the stuff you don't usually do.

Fox = how well you can control yourself
Falco = how well you can control your opponent

Please, exaggerate Fox's strengths and oversimplify him more. I don't think you have done so enough.

Sometimes, you need to consider how you work instead of just the intensity of your work. If you try the same things over and over and get the same results, then you need to try something new. Have you been doing that?

Actually, have you been training hard most days and thinking about the game often for many years? Do you understand why you take anything you take from a good Falco and how you can improve it or make it your own technique? Do you understand Falco's fundamental attributes and seek to push them all?

Do you ask for advice or ever play to learn?

Do you keep yourself healthy in mind and body?

If you can't answer all of these in the most optimistic way possible, then you shouldn't give up because you have much you can work on in many ways I'd wager. =)

Whenever a Falco main says they "don't have it easy" I'm always at a loss what to say.

I'm sorry your character can solve most of its problems by pushing more buttons? That's tragic?

lol, kk..you always bring a smile to my face

"Please, exaggerate Fox's strengths and oversimplify him more. I don't think you have done so enough."

also, we need people like him who think fox is godlike and automatic to balance people like me who bash fox every chance they get...

i always make it a point to piss off any fox players i beat by telling them it's not their fault they lost since they play a sucky character

not really sure if i believe it, but it certainly pisses off all the fox mains with their endless faith in the supposed infinite tech ceiling of fox.

fox is pretty good though I guess. so solid all around..all his matchups are at least close to even as far as i can tell, and consistency tends to be valued pretty highly by top players...but i for one don't think it's a coincidence that foxes don't win all the tourneys....of course, it's just cause their tech skill was off that day....

I do think that falco tends to get punished more harshly for slight misspacing than fox just cause of his slower movement speed...but you also have lasers to help compensate...falcos don't really have much of an excuse when they bring a gun to the fight

Pressing more buttons once hit makes you miss more techs :) And then your stock is gone.
It's more about becoming better at pushing buttons.
...at the right time.

From the time you start to when you end does not mean a whole lot either. I started playing about two years ago. But, my actual time was really 6 hours each week for about 64 weeks as an over estimate. I've only logged in about 384 hours game time with other competitors. I would say that is not much still. Even less time when I consider I split it between marth/falco and other hours being spent doing random stuff with other characters.

I hate playing Falco at times. Especially when you get hit by something random and then you're offstage and you die
Fox is fun cause he's just so fast

And if you try to resolve your problems by pressing more buttons as Falco you end up like Shiz
If you try to resolve your problems by pressing more buttons as Fox you end up like Javi

at least I don't complain about Sheik

I know that feel of giving up. I was playing Falco for awhile but the level of my gameplay and improvement were nearly stagnant. So I decided to play more floaty 'gay' characters and started winning more.

Do you enjoy playing Falco? Or do you just want to win? If you just want to win without contest, move onto to other characters. If you genuinely enjoy playing Falco regardless of your level, then stick with the bird. If you want to play Falco and win then you need to find a new way to improve.

Are you practicing by playing other people or computers? How/what are you practicing? It's better to train for 10 mins, focusing on one particular aspect vs 10 hours of playing Vs. matches for fun against a computer (which is how I wasted my time). You have to be smart and efficient with your time.
