I wouldn't mind Rex, honestly despite liking XB1 more than XB2, I like Rex more than Shulk. I never really liked Shulk and for most of the game I went Melia, Rikki and Sharla. I would've gone with Dunban instead of Sharla but for some reason I thought I needed a healer, Shulk is a shut in who is also a seasoned sword user for some reason. Rex is pretty likable, he's worked hard his whole life and he has a lot of growth throughout XB2 in terms of skill and maturity, though I still ended up playing Tora instead for most of the game. I like Elma more than both, because I found the dynamic of being a weirdly skillful no-name working with someone who is essentially a celebrity that you see in a more personal light really interesting and different. She doesn't have character development in terms of skill, she's always good, but instead with her trust of her teammates.

What Xenoblade Chronicles X song would represent the game best on the smash bros website?

Personally I would like to see a Themex remix by Ace.
Melancholia, my favorite song of the OST. Uncontrollable, No. EX01, The key we've lost, Codename Z, even Black Tar would work too.

I had another dream about Elma last night but coincidentally it was less about Smash and more of a potential X sequel. I know cause I dreamt I saved in an unfamiliar location that looked like it belonged in Mira and every time I loaded up I had to run like hell cause a high level Tyrant would spawn in that spot

And there was, unrelated to X or Smash, a part where I was riding in a car and had to tell the driver to go faster cause an airplane was on top of a building and caused it to topple over

Man my dreams are weird

And with that we have reached 2000 replies! And the most notable thing is that we reached 1000 replies less than a month ago! It's great to see Elma's support getting stronger and stronger as time passes.

I think it's interesting that if you combine the two theories about the website's music and the stage count being final you get two criteria for new characters: no newcomers from new series, and that all unique newcomers will come from series that currently don't have music on the blog. Every franchise that fits into these criteria is as follows-

:ultmario::ultfox::ultpikachu::ultness::ulticeclimbers::ultgnw::ultpit::ultwario::ultsonic::ultolimar::ultrob::ultvillager::ultwiifittrainer::ultlittlemac::ultmiifighters::ultpacman::ultshulk::ultduckhunt::ultcloud::ultbayonetta:

Now to narrow it down further by striking every series that doesn't make sense to have a unique newcomer, in a spoiler so this doesn't take up so much room.

:ultmario:- Geno makes way too much sense at this point, so Mario gets to stay.
:ultfox:- Krystal is an Assist Trophy, and if she's not in there's definitely not a Star Fox newcomer unless we get like, Slippy Toad for whatever reason.
:ultpikachu:- Pokemon is probably getting a new character to represent the newest generation as usual, so Pokemon will advance.
:ultness:- Ninten would end up as a Ness echo, but technically Porky has a chance if Sakurai decides to add villains for the sake of it, even though the only villainous newcomers we've seen so far are pretty popular in their own right. If anything he'll be a Spirits mode boss. Easy strike.
:ulticeclimbers::ultgnw::ultrob::ultduckhunt:- Grouping these retros together since they're such simple, self explanatory no's.
:ultpit:- Unless Sakurai bias goes through the roof, we're not getting a unique KI character. I could see Viridi as a Palutena echo though.
:ultwario:- With Ashley dead and gone, so too goes WarioWare's chances at getting a new rep.
:ultsonic:- Shadow is probably in, but as an echo. Knuckles is an AT and I think Tails is still in Green Hill Zone's background, so the only completely unique Sonic character we could possibly get is Eggman. That would be one heck of a Hail Mary, especially since Shadow is theoretically already in as an echo.
:ultolimar:- All of the Pikmin protagonists play basically the same so the best the series can hope for is an Olimar echo. Next.
:ultvillager:- Isabelle has been leaked by Vergeben, but she's speculated to be an echo fighter.
:ultwiifittrainer:- Just no.
:ultlittlemac:- Again, this one's just not happening.
:ultmiifighters:- Miis will probably forever remain the only Smash original fighters.
:ultpacman:- Ms. Pac-Man could be an echo, but that's it.
:ultshulk:- Elma has a real chance, so Xenoblade stays.
:ultcloud:- Square is so stingy with FF content that it'd be a minor miracle to get just another music track.
:ultbayonetta:- Jeanne would be a Bayonetta echo. Nobody else makes much sense.

That leaves us with just these three finalists-

:ultmario::ultpikachu::ultshulk:

I believe Vergeben's leaks claiming we're getting a new Square character and a Gen 7 Pokemon are going to end up as Geno and Incineroar, so Mario and Pokemon aren't surprising to see show up. The interesting thing is that Xenoblade is the only other franchise that really would make sense to get a completely unique newcomer in this scenario, who of course would be Elma. Three more unique characters would also fit the reveal timeline perfectly when you consider the pace of reveals so far. Each general direct (March + E3) has only revealed one unique character, and the sole Smash Direct revealed two. We're almost definitely going to get one more general direct by the end of the year, and a Smash direct is practically guaranteed to show up within the final month leading up to release.

Of course, the only way this works out is if both of those theories actually hold up down the line, otherwise characters like Skull Kid, Isaac, and Bandana Dee could burst this little speculative bubble. I'm still going to drink my Elma flavored Kool-Aid though.

It is weird that Xenoblade still has no update on the blog. Maybe they're waiting till Elma's reveal

Assuming Elma's in, I think they'll do a blog post of Shulk first before revealing her via direct.

I could see them being sneaky and posting about Shulk like a day before the actual direct, because when you look at the pattern, character updates usually occur on some kind of significant day for the character, whether it be a new game launching or an anniversary. If we look at the Xeno games' release dates:

Xenoblade Chronicles: June 10, 2010 (Japan), August 19, 2011 (Europe), September 1, 2011 (Australia), April 6, 2012 (North America)

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D: April 2, 2015 (Japan and PAL), April 10, 2015 (North America)

Xenoblade Chronicles X: April 29, 2015 (Japan), December 4, 2015 (North America), December 5, 2015 (Europe and Australia)

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: December 1, 2017 (Worldwide)

So, it seems like Shulk could be given a post any time, as there aren't too many significant dates on the horizon. So, if we get Elma, I'd say Shulk would either come pretty soon after or right before she was revealed.

So, not sure if there's still a question of the day "active", but here's my suggestion for another one: Favourite weapon combination for the avatar? Like, once you max out every class for your avatar in X, you can just freely mix and match melee weapons and ranged weapons, with no class restrictions.
I personally pretty much exclusively used longswords, together with assault rifles (that is to say, the Ramjet Rifle) for most of the time, and then dual guns, because I'm not creative enough to go for anything but a generic Ether Blossom Dance build.
. . .But even that aside, longswords got some really cool arts. Tornado Blade, Rising Blade, Incendiary Edge, Blossom Dance, Offensive Stance. . . really, the only other melee I kinda wanna try out at some point is the photon saber.

Right, not trying to derail this into an argument here. . . but Rex having any kind of growth? You must've played an entirely different game than I have. Shulk being a competent enough fighter is also justified well enough by him being part of the Defense Force as well as being friends with Dunban.

All three main characters of the Xenoblade receive some development throughout there games.
Shulk was just (a salvager like rex?!?!) mechanic who worked with mechon parts to create new things and enjoyed his simple life with his friends until the big event happens as he becomes embroiled in revenge but soon realises that the world is under a much greater conflict.

Elma is giant spoiler who is trying to fight for survival in a new environment. As she uncovers new secrets and fights alongside her new team she must get used to calling mira her new home.

Rex was just a salvager looking for money when he got involved with Pyra. He was forced to become a driver and defend her as he realises the sacrifice she made for him. Rex must fight for more than just himself.

In regards to the fighting capabilities of each character.
- Both Rex and Shulk were born in a world of monsters, so the must naturally know how to fight but by the end of there stories they are fighting much bigger and more powerful opponents due to there new experience (from the main story) and there New OP weapons lol.
- Elma has always been fighting in wars and if you do her last affinity mission it shows her growth with her team as they defeat a indigen that originally defeated her old team.

XC 1 and 2 are surprisingly similar in small ways.

We should make a separate thread for our Elma related dreams. I'd love to read about all the wacky ways Elma is revealed and what not.

Somewhat related, I had a dream that Edelgard from the new Fire Emblem game was revealed for Smash alongside a couple other FE characters totaling to just over 20 FE characters to appear in Smash. Whew, I know a lot of people who would be upset with that announcement. I swear I awoke then because I could taste their salt in my mouth.

Y'all should watch the Dragalia Lost Direct! It's airing in just a few minutes.

If this project is a major success, we could see a few Xenoblade cameos! :D

I dreamt I was playing a Xenoblade X sequel, except all I did was explore some small area similar to the roofs in Cauldros and save my game.

...both exciting and unexciting.

I never finished X. I should really sit down and play it. Elma was really cool though, and aside from Rex she's my 2nd place most realistic char choice for Ultimate.

I ended up using the Smash Bros team of Shulk, Dunban and Rikki with Seven later replacing Dunban. For 2 I only ever kept Nia in the party at all times due to wanting a driver blade that could deal and switched out the others when they gained a level. I would say my best team was Rex, Nia and Morag.

I don't buy the music theory due to it likely being random when the song is not related to a newcomer.

While your logic makes sense, I'm afraid it's erroneous. we've had precedent in the past where the revealed newcomer was predated by characters, stages and possibly even music (though I can't think of any examples at this time). Robin and Lucina were predated by Arena Ferox, Little Mac by the boxing ring, ROB by well ROB fodder, and Toon Link by conductor Toon Link. Palutena was even predated by the pseudo Palutena trophy if you want to include that. While none of my examples include music, I hardly say that makes much difference as I see stages and characters as much harder deconfimations than music.

It's probably due to the 8.8.18's direct having Castlevania music on the day of Simon's reveal, K. Rool's theme the next week, and also Metroid music being one of the first put up, putting it right after Ridley's reveal. I don't know if it's enough to call it a pattern, but I think IF Elma was a character, they'd leave Xenoblade X music till after her reveal.

It's definitely not an outright deconfirmation, but I'd doubt her chances if they gave us XCX music before her possible reveal.

i hope leak season goes shut next month
good lord
Probably not happening any time soon. Until Sakurai outright says "'kay, that's all new characters", people will continue to make fake leaks.
. . .And then post-release, people will start making leaks for DLC until that's done. And then the speculation and leaks for the next game begins. . .
It's an inescapable cycle.

Oh I agree, there are definitely patterns; that has always been the case. However there have also been deviations (or "red herrings" if you will). That's all I'm saying, you can't rely on patterns as guidelines because they don't always follow through. That's what makes them patterns and not rules.

You think that would stop anything? HAH! You're talking about the community that has people who genuinely believe Waluigi still has a chance at being playable, and him being an Assist Trophy is just an elaborate ruse. If Sakurai came out and said "This is all the characters." people would just take a page from the Half-Life fanbase and baselessly accuse Sakurai of lying so that we're all caught off guard by the 'big announcement.'

You know, on the topic of directs, it's weird how we've gotten so many this month. FIrst we had the Smash direct, then 2 Nindies Directs, and then the mobile game direct. It's just strange how we really have no pattern for announcements any more. I feel like the next Direct is just going to be out of the blue since it seems like no one can predict a pattern with Nintendo stuff. I know I sure can't.

and that's not even the worst part. Back in the brawl days people were looking at the subspace clouds calling out characters like Ganondorf and Ridley.

Of course this devolved into people using a generic brawl picture to confirm "cloud."

Funny enough every character "confirmed" by those cloud picks ended up coming to smash.........

To be fair this continued with Smash 4 and a lot of the characters people saw in the clouds/background ended up getting in. Pac-Man in Greninja's trailer, Bowser Jr. in Mega Man's trailer, Duck Hunt in Shulk's trailer.

Hi everyone. I made palette swaps for some confirmed and potential newcomers. Here’s one for Elma. Let me know what you think!

Talking about patterns, I've noticed that for a while every week had 3 blog posts on characters. This could always change, but by looking at the remaining announced fighters you realize they are 33, which would cover exactly 11 weeks before release. That would leave us with 3 weeks without characters, so it could mean that we will see 9 more characters including echoes.

My personal guess if we haven't seen all the stages would be:
Unique: Elma, Chorus Kids, Isaac, Gen VII Pokémon, Bandana Dee
Echoes: Dixie, Shadow, Ken, Isabelle

If we have seen all the stages:
Unique: Elma, Bandana Dee, Gen VII Pokémon, Geno, someone from Zelda.
Echoes: Dixie, Shadow, Ken, Isabelle.

I really thought Ridley was gonna be playable cause that branch in the second pic looks a lot like him. Guess its kinda easy to project conspiracy theories onto inanimate objects. Or Sakurai could just intentionally be pulling our legs.

I never popped in here to offer my support but I'm going to now. I adore Xenoblade X and actually started playing both Xenoblade and X again and God I love this series so much. Anything from this series is great to me and Elma is the best case scenario.

I just had a thought regarding Elma's hypothetical reveal trailer. I rewatched some of the earliest trailers for X, and realized, the initial scene from this trailer would work very well as a basis for the opening of her character reveal trailer. With Elma taking Cross' role, that is. Thoughts?

That's actually a really incredible idea, I'm just wondering how they'd incorporate other smash characters into it since every trailer does
