Either MGS4 or GTA4 is getting Game of the Year

I'm about 90% positive of it now that most (if not all) of the major games are out already and have been reviewed. I've been looking up reviews A LOT from different sources for a while now and I have played both MGS4 and GTA4.

Between the two, MGS4 should win hands down, and I'm sure anyone who has played it would agree. By far the greatest offline shooter I have ever played. An amazing story + rock-solid gameplay + fantastic graphics + a 20+ hour campaign (not including it's replay value either!) = a recipe for success. How could the game not win GotY?

GTA4 is also a force to be reckoned with. It has gotten great reviews overall, but not as good as MGS4. It has a great story mode and a lot of replay value with it's online. It also has a lot of hype behind it, heck it's one of the most popular series in gaming today. Of course it is a candidate for GotY.

If there's any game that could surprise anyone, imo, it might be Little Big Planet. Haven't played it yet but from what I've heard/read, the possibilities in that game are limitless, and it has a nostalgic type of feel for it. Might be considered the greatest platformer since Mario himself. At the same time, it does have a few minor flaws to it like a short 3-6 hour campaign mode, but they are still only minor flaws.


What do you guys think? Agree/disagree? Any games I did not mention that could get GotY?

But I give credit when credit is due, gta4 is a great game and I wouldnt care if it wins because i love meh mgs.

I'm hoping it gets Game of the Year. It deserves it, IMO.

I completely forgot about Dead Space. Haven't played it but I heard that one's going down in video game history as one of the scariest video games ever. It has also gotten good reviews. Possibly another game that could surprise. Has anyone here played it and give us some feedback? Thanks.

I wouldnt mind if deadspace gets goty. Because id rather have a company that trys once and makes it big for goty, rather than mgs series which has always been good and is pretty expected that the next one will be fantastic. Im just trying to say id like to see first timers rather than veterans to get goty you know just to share some of them trophies.

The game is fun, but at times it gets horribly frustrating when they restrain all the ammo for you. Then, you know when anything big will happen because you suddenly get A LOT of ammo. Fun game, and great story, but it will never be as good as Bioshock in my mind.

Firus SMG was released in 2007..why would it win GOTY 2008? Yea Metal Gear Solid 4 is hands down gonna win. GTA IV and Fallout 3 are over rated. Funny that seqeuals(sp?) of past GOTYs are fighting for it this year

It definetly better be MGS4, why? becuase I'm a huge fan of the Metal Gear Series, as for GTA4, it's good and all but i've just never been into those type of run and shoot games, IMO I thing GTA4 is way too overrated when in fact it isn't even that good, let's just say the whole series in general isn't that good, but again this is only IMO.

Even though Brawl scored around MGS4's level, (gawd know's why is that game not in this thread), I don't think MGS4 will get game of the year. GTA4 is so over hyped, to the point that it scores near Super Mario Galaxy level, (which is the highest scoring game on the Wii as of now). So regardless of how many people wouldn't like it, GTA4 will get game of the year due to many fixed intervewers.

Yes some people consider MGS4 a tactical shooter, but some people just say it's tactical... W/E

Anyway, like I said earlier, Little Big Planet is definitely a candidate for GotY. The game has a sh** load of replay value. Heck possibly the most in platformer history. At the same time, (from what I've heard) the game is littered with minor flaws that barely makes it fall short of GotY.

Mirror's Edge definitely won't get GotY. A very unique experience, but the game just doesn't deliver overall. It gets repetitive and the campaign is extremely short. These are only the few flaws I'm mentioning. A solid game w/o a doubt, but not GotY material.

Thing was overhyped. Same with Brawl and GTAIV. The game that deserves GoTY is Metal Gear Solid IV. -sigh- Always next year, eh?

I don't think I would really care which game wins. Hell if Halo 3 won it wouldn't make me rush to the store to buy a 360 and Halo 3. In fact I don't even care what a game gets for a review, it's all ridiculous to me reviews are just buyers guides trying to single out the best bang for your buck but in the end it's personal preference. The review will not change the experience of the player, though the ignorant will let it sway their opinion of a game.

So if a game wins game of the year it won't matter to me, because it won't change anything. Someone will always be disappointed.

Yea I kinda agree with this. It was a great game no doubt, but I just don't feel like it's on MGS4's level. I really hope MGS4 wins.

GTA4 better not win, its a terrible game. Its a sandbox game without any fun, the controls are awful, car handling is crap even walking feels like Niko is weighed down with boots of cement. And Roman calling you. Every. Five. SECONDS! The game was over-hyped to the max and (a note for all games developers) realism does not equal good gameplay.

MGS4 on the other hand is a fantastic game (some parts are boring as hell, Crying Wolf boss battle is the worst MGS boss battle ever) but graphics are fantastic, great gameplay, and the conclusion to the best storyline I've ever seen.

The only problem with MGS4 is it's long cut-scenes. It doesn't necessarily hurt the game but when the cut scenes come out to be longer then the time you are playing there is a problem.

LittleBigPlanet is definitely going to win SOMETHING, it's got a brilliant soundtrack, hilarious narration from Stephen Fry, loads of replay value. It's just a gaming jem that only comes around every decade or so. Trust me, it is going to win something if not Game of the Year.

Well obviously...GotY still matters, though, because it's an award, an honor. If a crappy game wins an award, isn't that something that concerns you? It concerns me, anyways.

But I'm not familiar with (i.e. haven't played) just about any games that will probably win, so I'm running on this:

- Brawl sucks. Better not win.
- GTA sucks as it is (the concept, in my opinion), and from this thread I take it GTA4 is even worse. Better not win.
- LittleBigPlanet sounds good, and if I had a PS3 I'd get it. Would be happy if it won GotY.
- MGS4 is another game I'd get if I had a PS3. Would be happy if it won GotY.

I don't think any other games are in the running and very likely to win, so nothing else really concerns me.

Oblivion was a boring game that was a dumbing down of the RPG elements of Morrowind, combined with boring countryside that all looked the same. Oblivion is made much better by mods, but that's all that saves it from being incredibly mediocre.

Not usually, and I don't think Brawl necessarily will win, but there's a first time for everything. Let's face it, Smash Bros is a different type of fighting game.

I haven't played Oblivion myself, but yeah, I've heard from others that this is true, and that Morrowind was much better. And as is said in Brawl discussions, if a game has to be modded to be good, doesn't say much for the game...

On the flipside, though, I've heard that the game is awesome. Depends on who you talk to, I suppose.

Which is exactly why I sort of agree with BloodPuppy. GotY isn't important in the scheme of things because everyone has a different opinion. Even the most amazing games are hated by at least one or two outcasts. Even the most awful games are loved by at least one or two outcasts. GotY just kind of emphasizes opinion a lot more than it should be.
But I still care what ends up winning it, because it does play into the argument of how good a game is. People will argue "Well, it won GotY" or "Hey, it didn't win GotY".
I really don't want an uprising of "BRAWL WINS BCAWZ IT WUN GAEM OF DA YEER!"
