I don't know how someones even going to tell me Oblivion didnt deserve GOTY. Even if you prefer Morrowind Oblivion is outstanding.

Why is Oblivion outstanding? Is it the repetitive voice-acting? The bad third-person animations? Boring countryside? Crappy leveled enemies? Limited dialogue trees? Boring combat? An in general streamlining (dumbing down) of Morrowind RPG elements and scaling down of the world-size? Maybe the random dungeons with no apparent unique individual backstory?

Sure, Morrowind had bad third-person animations and boring combat, but Morrowind is leaps and bounds over the boring-thon that Vanilla Oblivion is.

Like I said, modded Oblivion is better, but that's not what I'm basing my opinion on.

Wii fit is a nominee for best individual sports game of the year.

Wii music is a nominee for best music game of the year.

Best Wii game Nominees:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Boom Blox
Wii Fit
No More Heroes

I wonder what it's gonna being...
No More Heroes and Wii Music are both disgraces. The possibility of those two winning ANY award whatsoever makes me want to throw up. In fact, Game Informer is putting Wii Music on the worst game of the year candidate list.

Best games of the year IMO(No order)

MSG4
GTA4
Brawl
CoD:WaW
Gears of War 2
Fallout 3
You missed a few but no LittleBigPlanet? :(

It might be that there aren't many music game makers. They took the best from each company.

Best Music Game
Rock Band 2 (MTV Games/ Harmonix)
Guitar Hero World Tour (RedOctane/ Activision Publishing/ Neversoft Entertainment)
Wii Music (Nintendo/ Nintendo)
SingStar (Sony Computer Entertainment/ SCE Studios London)

Wow. I guess I'm going to have to vote for Boom Blox, despite not having played it. You've got that, Brawl, the game that defines casual gaming, and the bloody M game that apparently was all bloody because apparently Nintendo has no concept of "hardcore gamer" that doesn't involve some sadistic teenager.

Agreed.

I'm not surprised that Game Informer is putting Wii Music on the Worst Game of the Year candidate list. Their review was...well, worse than devastating. Anyone who hates that game owes it to themselves to read that review, it was hilarious.

No More Heroes wasn't a disgrace, it was just average. It didn't have any kind of exciting new innovations but it certainly wasn't a bad game.

Maybe your afraid to give 3rd parties a chance on the Wii? :chuckle:

When a game gets enough hype, as did NMH, you have to call it a disgrace to even out the actual mediocrity and the supposed awesomeness. "Disgrace" can be relative to what the game was expected to be.

Maybe your afraid to give 3rd parties a chance on the Wii? :chuckle:
No offense, but it really ticks me off when people make assumptions that imply that a person is just making up their opinion as they go along for some underlying reason.

I don't really care that much what wins GOTY since it doesn't affect my gaming purchases but I can't really think of a game I would like to see win really. Though I kind of hope it's not GTAIV, I definitely believe that game is a testament to realism =/= fun.

*sees the wii nominee list*
I completely forgot NMH came out this year, was probably in January or something. Out of the Wii category SSBB is probably the one that's going to win. Though, I did enjoy Boom Blox and NMH and I'm glad to see that they're being recognized as enjoyable games. I guess I'll just look forward to seeing the list of winners in each category after it airs.

Yes. I am in fact afraid of 3rd party games on Wii. /sarcasm

- There was a lot of hype behind No More Heroes
- Therefore I read up on game and liked what I saw
- Therefore I gave the game high expectations
- Game comes out
- Game fell WAY below expectations
- Therefore I label game as a disgrace

/my life story

EDIT: Can we keep the topic off of No More Heroes before it becomes a flame war? Thanks.

I'm not trying to flame anyone's opinion on NMH, I'd never even seen hype for the game I just enjoyed the humor and the Wii Remote game play that wasn't a mini-game.

I did not say No More Heroes was an award worthy game, as Firus seemed to think I said the way he replied to my post, I said it was an AVERAGE game, not bad but not exceptionally good it was AVERAGE. It had it's (obvious) flaws but it was still a good rent for anyone with that taste of game.

Besides it isn't a flame war if we are discussing No More Heroes chances of winning or not winning an award. Which it most likely won't.

@Puddin

I know it's not a flame war YET, but we could just keep going on back and forth on whether NMH was a good game or not, and that isn't the intention of this thread. If someone wants to start a debate on that, post a new thread on it.

I just said that to make sure it didn't turn into a flame war, that's all.

All of you guys are underestimating Fallout3.

That game kicks major buttocks. I'm gonna laugh when it gets more GotY awards than both MGS4 and GTA4. Just watch you will all see.

First of all, Vanilla ice cream is my favorite.

And now:

-The game was meant to be played 1st person, yet was identical gameplay wise in 3rd, albeit ugly.
-The countryside was actually pretty stunning compared to JRPGs and most other current western RPG's (Mass Effect, Fallout 3). It was especially amazing in SI, imo.
-Leveled enemies was simply a developer decision to keep people interested as they continued to play, and it's the reason people log over 250 hours on characters. I guarentee you Fallout would not be fun to me if I could continue to level and the enemies stayed the same. Are you saying there should be a level cap?

As for repetitive voice acting, Limited Dialogue, and Random Dungeons, I guess I just have to ask you what you thought did better in '06. There was a big enough difference in personalities that the voice acting didn't bother me, and what is there is well done. I thought the NPC's were all very creative. I'll give you dialogue branches, Mass Effect did WAY better and I really noticed it, but that WAS a year later. I thought the cities really made up for the random dungeons- what game really has unique dungeons anyways? There was plenty of unique STORIES behind what you were doing, so it never bothered me.

And I'm just going to assume you never really got into the magic if you thought combat was boring. There was SO many different spells it wasn't even funny. I don't know how much more variety you can get w/o guns or a turn-based system.

Just trying to defend one of my favorite all time games.

The problem with the environment is that while initially very impressive, quickly all looks the same. For me a game needs to not only have nice looking environments, but have a variety of them as well. There just wasn't enough variety, especially in comparison to Morrowind which I loved wandering around in. Well I would if it weren't for those ****ed cliff racers...

Leveled enemies just take away any sense of character progression for me. I just feel like my character is stuck in some sort of time warp where he never gets any stronger. I wouldn't mind a certain amount of level scaling, but Oblivion's implemenatation of the idea didn't work for me.

In terms of what did better as far as RPGs go in '06 not a whole lot that I can think of. I haven't playe Mass Effect yet though I want to, but there's been kind of a dry spell in terms of really good RPGs as of late in my opinion. Nothing approaching the original Fallouts or even Morrowind (which I enjoyed massively, just not as much as Fallout 1/2).

I actually liked the magic. Magic in Morrowind was a bit confusing until you got used to the language used, and it was pretty boring. Oblivion magic was pretty interesting by comparison, but the amount of mana you got was kind of pathetic. I could never realistically use finger of the mountain...

Not really, it really isn't worth it. Neither side is going to convince the other, it's just going to result in people getting angry and will probably just degenerate into flaming and such.

That sounds fun in a sick perverse way actually.

I bet Gears of War 2 will get GOTY. GOTY is a joke, I don't see why people care so much about it.

You're right, it pretty much IS a joke. Still, it makes for interesting reading. Some thoughts...

I'm really happy that Professor Layton and the Curious Village got nominated for best handheld. That's a strong lineup too.

If Burnout Paradise and NHL 09 don't win their respective fields I will ragequit life.

I think nominating two music games for "best soundtrack" is a bit silly. I hope LBP wins that one, "Get it Together" by The Go! Team still rocks any level it appears in.

That's a pretty sombre Wii line up. Zack and Wiki got an early '08 release in Europe and Australia, so it gets my vote, though all this No More Heroes rage makes me want to play it again to spite you all.

Look at the Best Fighting Game line up. What a joke. Congratulations Soul Calibur IV. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a bit of Brawl, but MK vs DC and DBZ? Is that truly the best we can do?

It's not that people should care so much about it, it's more of an honor for the developers who put all their hard work and time into making the game the amazing piece of art that it is. Fans of the game just get the bragging rights. But it is really more for the developers sake.

How is Guilty Gear not in the best fighting game running? It got an early 08 EU release. Come on, if any game deserves that award it's Guilty Gear. And how is Street Fighter 2 HD Remix not in the running for best fighting game?

How does playing a game we find to be crappy spite us...?
If anything, in our opinion it would just screw you over if we really hate the game that much and care what you do.

No offense...

In hindsite it probably wouldn't do much. I'd be having a good time though, in kind of a "to hell with you guys, this game is awesome" kind of way.

Ok..well X-Play has some pre best game of the year thing going on.

I don't really like X-Play though, for one they are on G4 which has become nothing but Cops and "Movies that don't suck" when the only good movie they ever play is Fight Club.

Anyway, they gave some unknown DLC plat-former their most original game other LittleBigPlanet.

And it seems as though their writers bring up their browsers and look up what the majority think at the moment rather then their opinions. They just mentioned how UBER-BUMMED they were that Sony was pulling content from LBP online. Which is stupid because it isn't even Sony's decision.

So X-Play is NOT a good example for the results of the real GOTY awards.

This

Also, it feels good knowing that one of your favorite games is also one of the greatest games of the year. (Cod4 4 LYFE BABY!) At the same time, not every great game can get GotY unfortunately. Just because a game doesn't win GotY, YOU will still love the game as much whether if it won or not. In fact, anyone who likes games just because of what other people say/review is not a true gamer. (Halo 3 may have been a big upset to many, but it's still one of my favorite games to this day)

Heck imagine trying to name the greatest game ever? I would have trouble just naming the top 20! :psycho:

I find most top X lists to be complete crap, I saw one [I think it was IGN] that had at least 3 Maddens and I'm sure Tiger Woods was in there and as usual OoT was somewhere high up on the list again. These days you can pretty much guess the top 10 games on those lists will be from more than 10 years ago that can't compete with today's standards.

I dunno, I think that certain select games from today are good, but honestly I think developers focused more on game design and the aesthetic side of graphics more than the technical side. I think that there's a trend now of pulling away from focus on game design, and towards making graphics pretty.

Sadly I don't think it will either. Fantastic game though! I've never had so much fun playing co-op with a friend in any game! I also love the amount of strategy and teamwork needed to beat the harder levels on the hardest difficulties.

Definitely in my top 5 greatest games of the year list.

Oh, that's easy. Super Metroid.

;)

I'm really hoping that, by that statement, you mean crappy games from 10 years ago...not games from 10 years ago that are awesome and "aren't up to today's standards" in your opinion.

Like, are you talking all games past last gen or something or are you just saying crappy old games?

I mean games further back, like N64 and PS1 games. Whenever I read those lists it's always the same, as if the editors or whoever feel obliged to reserve the top spots for the same games each time. I'm sure you've seen a fair share of top 10/25/50/100 games game lists, you probably noticed the repeating trend in them where as you get further to the top you constantly see Mario [1/2/3/world/etc]/Zelda[LttP, OoT,etc] and maybe Metroid.

I'm not saying these games aren't good [far from it] but what's the point in making top 100 lists and filling the spots people are most curious about with the same games that were on the list the year before. I'd like to see a top 100 list without games before PS2/GC/Xbox gen because pretty much everyone knows how the older games rank on those lists by now.

The handheld list is only missing The World Ends With You, which was a really great game

And i wouldnt be surprised if it was Brawl>SC4, Brawl got on average higher scores. And contrary to alot of whatpeople here think, Brawl was a ver good game (read:outside of the competitive scene, in which reviews dont take account into)

Correct you are. If we stop looking at Brawl as this supermegacompetitive powerhouse that we hoped it would be, we would see just how great this game really is in comparison to most of the other Wii titles out there.

If I didn't grow up with the smash series then I would not own a Wii... Ok maybe I would get it for LoZ TP and SMG.
