Early Smash 5 Fan-Made Rosters (Ideal or Prediction)

Note: There is no way this roster will be chosen for smash 5. I simply made this as a joke to see how smash 5 would look if they made it all about the mario series.

The Ultimate Mario Roster

You might notice there are 4 different colors for the outlines of the characters. If you've never used the roster maker or simply don't know, here's what they mean.
Blue: A regular character coming pre-unlocked. EX: Mario
Red: An unlockable character. EX: Mr. Game And Watch
Green: A named reskin of a character. (It should be easy to tell who they are reskins for.) EX: The Koopalings
Yellow: A character unlockable by DLC. EX: Mewtwo
This roster is in no way gonna happen, I was just messing around to see what would be most likely if sakurai decided to add only mario characters in the next smash bros. game. I started with smash 4 wii u edition and built off of there. No characters were removed from smash 4.

This might piss some people off, but instead of a lot of cuts to "make room" for more characters, I just expect them to add fewer characters. The roster size should be around 65 - 70 characters and, in a perfect world, there will be no cuts from smash 4. The only reason characters are ever cut from the roster is for either technical limitations (Ice climbers, Pokemon Trainer, Snake) or them being low-priority in a time constraint situation (Wolf, Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy).
DLC can fix the ladder very easily so that won't be a problem. Due to all smash 4 characters being on the 3ds they are all technically sound as well. The only character I see having an issue is Cloud due to Square Enix being a *****. Most "Low priority characters" are characters added late into the development cycle of the previous game and were not very popular in said game. The only characters that come to mind are DLC characters (which have been proven popular by them being DLC), Bowser Jr (Is an iconic character from NSMB), or the three clones. Lucina is a very popular character, so I doubt she will be cut. If Ike wasn't cut from smash 4, probably no FE character will get cut from smash 5. Dark Pit is from one of Sakurai's series, so he's safe. Dr Mario is the only potential cut I can see happening, but even then he is a Melee character so he has high "Smash Bros" Popularity.

This is good. My roster is way bigger, but is full of unlikely choices. Yours I still a lot more realistic, which I like. I also like how you didn't cut anyone, I always dislike it when people get 'cut happy' in rosters.

I used Decidueye and Anna as placeholders for the new Pokemon and Fire Emblem characters, and I went with Sylux for a Metroid character since he's almost definitely going to play a role in that game.

Seems like a good roster - additions are spread out well between a wide variety of series, and the choices that you made seem like good ones (though I can't really comment on placeholders for obvious reasons). My only issue would be the lack of new series (only one, Splatoon), but I understand that the roster was getting full as-is.

I couldn't think of a smash worthy new Nintendo IP or any classic games that really deserved to be in smash, but I'm sure that the devs will blow us away some how.

EDIT: Just googled and remembered Sylux (it's been a while since I played the prime trilogy), I am now 100% a supporter of him in smash if gets a role in prime 4.

They could also include series like Golden Sun or Custom Robo, that missed the boat originally. There's a ton of potential for characters when it comes to series like these, and including them in Smash could help to revitalize interest in those series.

Obviously, you don't have to include any of them (it is your list, after all); just figured I'd bring up some options for Nintendo franchises (and that's not even getting into third party series, where we've got series like Dragon Quest and Tekken, or companies like Ubisoft and SNK).

Arms actually has sold really well. In it's first week, Arms sold 100,652 in Japan in it's first week, Tekken 7 and SFV launch weeks combined is barely larger than Arms was, at 100,726

I really can't see Yooka-Laylee getting in. They're not very popular requests from what I've seen, and don't really have any history for Sakurai to take note of them. I feel like basically all hype for that game kinda died when it turned out to have a pretty mixed reception.

I think Spring Man or an Alola Pokémon like Decidueye (or a Gen VIII Pokémon depending on when the port comes out) would be much more likely for an enhanced port.

I guess for the most part, I was looking for one more possible 3rd party rep, and I thought that Yooka-Laylee would at least reference some of the Indie titles out there. Banjo and Kazooie are out of the question, since Microsoft owns the rights to Rare Ltd..

Anyway, Yooka-Laylee are pretty much a filler slot, since I wanted the roster image to look right with the way the characters are organized. Of course, Rayman could always be the 7th 3rd party rep instead, since he does have his own trophy in Smash Wii U.

That's not what relevancy means. That's just iconicness and popularity.

Last time she was relevant was Gen VI with the new Fairy type. She hasn't played any key roles since Gen I, and she wasn't promoted as a Fairy type. So the reasoning is legit at this point. I feel the same way, if I had to cut a Pokemon.

That's not what relevancy means. That's just iconicness and popularity.

Last time she was relevant was Gen VI with the new Fairy type. She hasn't played any key roles since Gen I, and she wasn't promoted as a Fairy type. So the reasoning is legit at this point. I feel the same way, if I had to cut a Pokemon.

aside from Smash Bros, Captain Falcon hasn't made a relevant game appearance for 14 years, so i don't think the logic of cutting Jigglypuff for "relevancy" holds up at all.

He's also from a past popular series and effectively a major face of Smash itself. Lastly, if somebody wanted to cut him because of relevance? Fair enough. They have a right to that opinion.

Jiggllypuff is an awesome character. But relevance is still a legit reason because she isn't actually relevant. Both reasons are ultimately legit. It also doesn't help that relevance has gotten characters cut before, so it's not like it isn't a fair point. There's nothing to imply characters ever got cut simply cause they were disliked. So it really depends what the user is looking for. Trying to go by Sakurai's design philosophies, personal bias, etc.

Two things about this:

1) Don't bank on certain characters being DLC, Sakurai himself said that none of the DLC characters were in development at the same time as the initial game. I would Add these to your initial roster. I see DLC as a kind of "second chance" for fighters who didn't make the first cut, not something they would use to force people to pay for base content post release.

2) I know its your list and you can cut whoever and blah blah, but come on man. Once a smash bro, always a smash bro. I highly doubt the smash devs would cut any character for being irrelevant or to "give another character a chance". If that were the case six fire emblem characters wouldn't have made it in to smash 4. Just because they add new characters doesn't mean they can't keep old ones too. Even if you don't like a character currently in the roster, wouldn't you rather see more in the game than less? Take the cuts made from Brawl: , , , and . Two were cut for technical reasons and one was added back in as DLC. I honestly have no idea why wasn't in smash 4. Even and made it back in as DLC so they obviously care about these characters. The only characters I can see being cut are low-effort, last minute clones/semi clones.

If somebody wants to cut her cause of that, that's actually a reasonable thing to think, and yes, relevance did get some characters cut.

And by everyone you probably mean a "lot of people". Cause there's quite a few I know who thought she was a clear mainstray(besides myself). I'll just presume that was more poor wording and hyperbole.

She was irrelevant back then as well, and irrelevant when brawl was going to be released, and when melee was going to be released. I was only refuting that irrelevancy would factor into her being cut if she ever was (which she won't be). Also, yes, that was hyperbole.

You can't really refute something when nobody was claiming that.

There's a lot of context you missed. The personal in general is making an ideal roster, not a prediction one. That means they do what they want cause it's their roster.

Prediction rosters are nothing more than guess of what'll happen. Nobody was referring to those when they said Jigglypuff was irrelevant. The context of what I meant earlier is that being irrelevant can get you cut, so people who want Jigglypuff cut due to that isn't ultimately being illogical because Sakurai has applied this philosophy. I don't think she'll be cut myself any time soon, despite being low priority. But yeah, it's just a simple misunderstanding of what we were referring to. No biggie.

it would be reasonable if the OP didn't suggest she should be cut in favor of Zoroark (who is way more irrelevant than Jigglypuff in terms of popularity and appearances ).

i was only pointing out the hypocrisy he was making.

if he actually said Jigglypuff should be cut because its "irrelevant" and replaced it with more relevant pokemon, his reasoning would be more valid. Just saying.

Ditto for an item again? But this time, works. Also, wow, getting something that strong in the anime... crazy. Bewear is one thing, who they can barely control. Ditto almost never shows up as is for balance reasons. But then again, they made it work with a recurring Dragonite.

Mr. Mime includes two generic words and there are many things named "Jynx" (Including characters from other video games)

Jigglypuff and Zoroark are sooooo specific, that they won't get mixed up with things not related to Pokemon.
