I've noticed the same pattern as well, Sonic is pretty much the only one that comes to mind when I think ''lacks representation in base game'' in terms of characters or music. There could be some other franchises akin to Steve that could've been negotiated for long before their eventual release, I'm guessing a 2nd Namco character like a Dark Souls rep due to its influence, heck, may even be Tales of, although the returning miis pretty much hurt this idea.I've noticed that the characters of FP2 so far all share a theme of filling in gaps from the original roster
Games were too late for base roster
Was in negotiation for five years
Finally made Final Fantasy's representation in the game feel fleshed out.
I'm no insider so I've got no clue what 3rd parties have been a long time coming (outside of rumors of Activision wanting Crash in Smash) but in terms of series that feel somewhat lacking and games that were too late, we've got:
Late to the party-
-Pokemon Generation 8 as a whole
-Animal Crossing New Horizons
-Hyrule Warriors and the upcoming BotW2
-Mega Man 11
Lacking representation
-Sonic the Hedgehog got two assist trophies but has always been lacking in the music department
-Namco has apparently assigned the majority of Pac-Man's history to the same bin that Disney threw the X-Men in
-Punch-Out didn't get anything new between 4 and Ultimate
-ROB still hasn't got a freaking stage.
-Kirby and DK are both well represented character wise but lack stages based off modern games and have notable characters missing.
I'm still adamant on the last two being a Namco & SEGA rep respectively, though. I think Arle would be a more profitable choice for the latter so there's that as well, if there was a Sonic character in the pass I still have a hard time to come up with a guaranteed candidate between Shadow, Tails or Eggman.
