Does she?

Yeah, I was a total n00b from the start of melee until I started knowing what about all these techniques and such.

I'm gonna come back soon and practice all the old techs, for fun.

short answer: yes.

long answer: it adds too much to her platform chases, approach, retreat, and overall gameplay to ignore. you have to do it.

I don't think we should go any further with this discussion until the Topic creator gives us his definition of the word "need".

No character NEEDS to L-Cancel. They won't stop existing if they don't L-Cancel. It isn't a requirement to L-Cancel to play any character. If you're speaking less literally, then it is certainly a good idea to learn and apply the advanced techniques to every character you play.

Need takes it a bit far, in my opinion. Some people rely purely on mind games and have varying degrees of success. It's possible to not use advanced techniques, but not very plausible at all.

its very possible to play a sheik style of dash attacks, grabs, downsmashes, ftilt to rising fairs and almost never be in a situation where u have to l cancel.

i do alotta platform work and shffls so i need it

They will be active, as long as I'm here, just wait till I get my hands on melee and you're going to see 10 threads of mine on the first page.

So she can never get shield grabbed with SHFFL aerials?

I saw capn jack do this, and the ice climber player kept trying to shield grab him but it didn't work.

I think one of the biggest misunderstandings is that shffl's make you immune to shieldgrabs.

They don't.

It depends on the move you're shffl'ing and - more importantly - how well you shffl it.

Let's say I'm playing as Sheik against a Marth. I fair his shield but I do it too high. I do hit his shield, but the shieldstun wears off as I'm coming down, and he grabs me from my fair lag.

Most grabs come out on the seven frame, and the fastest aerial L-cancels in seven frames. Your sidestep (the fastest option to avoid a grab) is effective on frame two. This means you're going to have to keep them in shieldstun for at least two frames after you hit the ground in order to avoid a frame-perfect shieldgrab.

Moral of the story is you have to hit them as close to your landing time as possible.

im real good at pulling the fair out real late, like ill fastfall first then hit the bottom of the shield and then just grab. im not sure but i think u might have enough of a frame advantage to guarantee the grab if u hit low enough

Just play Brawl if you don't want to l-cancel. Other things you don't have to do in Brawl: have any tech skill whatsoever, learn how to sweetspot, learn how to combo

I understand that L-cancels provide Sheik with some very practical advantages... the ability to avoid shield grabs, speed up her overall game, etc.

However, does L-canceling allow Sheik to do any really flashy combos that she would otherwise be unable to do? I.e. Falco Pillaring, CF Stomp to Knee, Fox Drill Shine, etc.

I was just asking because I read somewhere before on smashboards that "every character needs to L-cancel, except... maybe sheik."

Honestly though if I had to pick one character to play without L-cancelling... it'd definitely be sheik. Just tilt, grab, and full jump fair.

duh, theres tons of combos u cant do without lcancel. Like dair to anything. my favorite being dair on platform to drop thru uair to anything. but every aerial can be linked to a grab/tilt or anynumber of followups with lcancelling

Falcon kick.
Sheik needs everything. Every character could use all advance techniques. Why gimp yourself of not being able to do something. Practice it for a week, if you love the game it shouldn't bother you with all the improving you'll be doing from learning it. Sheik especially needs it, she applies shield pressure a lot, and without it you'll just get shield grabbed all day. Shield grabbing is easy at that too, so don't expect someone to mess up on it either.

The least L-cancel-e character is prolly jiggs. I see people play jiggs decently well without finger savvy advanced techniques. Sheik CAN be used without l-canceling... but really? Why not? It's really not as hard as it sounds, just be aware of what your timing on things are and you'll get it in no time :p

Sometimes I wonder why I come to the Sheik boards, then I see posts like these. Hooray for Scar.

u cant really play sheik with a "high attack output" ratio like fox and expect to do well. i feel like her aerial approach is just kinda fail in general, useful for spacing and variety but u cant just run around like fox with his nair spam.

It just depends on if you are good at shuffling or if you even want to learn it. I am still trying to get it down. I dont L-cancel with shiek much. I mostly tech.
