The funny thing is that would go to Alm and Celica, who seemingly weren't in the discussion at all.

Late but why is it surprising that nintendo would prioritize the latest mainline game over a remake, especially since the former gets so much more marketing push? We've seen it happen with so many games during smash 4/ultimate.
It's not like byleth has to be a fixed presence similar to how "random pokemon slot" was always reserved - brawl reportedly even had one specifically for fire emblem (which ended up being ike). It's even strangely concidental when 3H was actually planned for a 2018 release (with ultimate!)

Most likely (if the info is true), they most likely slotted fire emblem and pokemon open slots (with no fixed characters) and when 3H didn't make it to ultimate's release they pushed it to dlc. Are there some assumptions to be made? Of course, but it seems reasonable enough to be possibly true.

I guess I'll put some thoughts I've been hammering on out there, mostly related to Miis and spirits. We've not gotten any Arc Sys costumes yet but we have gotten spirits (The River-City Smash event) in the game and like the Octopath and Mana spirits showed Square has still been on board with collaboration. There could always be some Double Dragon or Guilty Gear costume down the line but for now there seemingly is none.

Is it tinfoily to question if the big N would only go to Arc Sys for a bunch of PNGs and nothing from one of their flagship fighting games?

FF1 is incredibly dated in terms of series standards to the point I'd say 2 captures the feel more than 1. That being said, play IX, the game with Vivi.

Based Vivi. Final Fantasy IX still the best Final Fantasy. Though FFVI and FFX are also there.

FFII, while not that great overall and one of the weaker entries in the franchise, could still be kind of fun, and there are definitely worse FFs than it. I don't even think it's the worst of the NES FFs (looking at you FFIII)

I completely agree.
Personally I enjoyed FFII more than the first one. FFIII is probably the weakest entry in my opinion. Final Fantasy IV was when the franchise started to be amazing, I'd say. The jump in quality between III and IV is very big.

They could 100% add another row in, this is obvious, and yet, with the Chun Leak, existing, I'd be lying if I didn't say a part of me was leaning towards the idea of "We're getting another same-series character", and this really all started thanks to Sephiroth.

I mean, I’m getting Box Theory vibes myself.

We had leaks saying Ken and Incineroar were it. Then box theory came up and suggested we would get two more characters, and the organization of characters on the box suggested Ken and one other character, basically solidifying it.

As you said it isn’t confirmed or anything, but I feel like folks should really think about it before going all in on denial. The same thing happened with Grinch vs Box.

I don't really want to pull the thread all the way back into this, but I was just saying that Byleth wasn't the "next FE character," as was previously claimed. You're right about them wanting to pull from a completely new game instead of a remake, but there's also the problem that cutting Byleth from the development plan would've left a hole in development time. You'd think we would have gotten something in their place or at least if Piranha Plant was meant for base game it would have made it. Neither of those things seemed to happen unless Chrom was the replacement, and we won't know that unless someone makes a definitive statement on the matter.

Box theory made sense as they knew the amount of character that would be playable before the box was made there is no way sakurai knew the full dlc when the game came out. How could he account for multi characters and ones with no voices like steve and even if he did why would he do this for a section noone would see over something like the stage select screen. Box theory also had a format with rows of different sizes on each side making it easier to count to certain numbers while voices are just in rows of three.

Voice theory seems to trivial to talk about. The UI for the voice menu was created way before pass 2. I doubt Sakurai would okay Nintendo's idea for (hypothetically let's just say) Crash and then want to develop a Coco alt only for Nintendo to tell him "Sorry Mr. Sakurai, adding an alt would go over the box limit in the sounds menu."

Pretty neat.
Reimu's kinda cool, despite my lack of experience with Touhou. I like her aesthetic and music, and they could probably do interesting things with her gameplay-wise.
Gordon's probably the least interesting of the three gameplay wise, but he does have a leg up on, say, Jonesy (I've long complained that Fortnite characters are extremely basic and would make for boring fighters) due to the alien technology he can get. And he is very iconic, particularly if Nintendo actively wanted to represent the PC market.
Isaac is someone I've come around to very recently, and he seems neat. Earth powers is something I don't think we've seen in a Smash fighter (unless you count Steve's blocks), he has a neat look, and I see him as a big iconic Smash request on a similar level to Geno.

Based Vivi. Final Fantasy IX still the best Final Fantasy. Though FFVI and FFX are also there.

I remember when I was younger, I got really obsessed with FFIX and Zidane in particular...despite the fact that I never played it.
I even got a copy of the game delivered from a non-local library to play on my PS2...but didn't get far because it didn't save properly (presumably because PS2 memory cards weren't compatible?).
I'm actually planning to get FFIX for Switch after Christmas.
