Lip feels more like base game material for the next game IMO, and they cannot show Lip’s Stick before she becomes playable; in fact they’d phase out the Lip’s Stick item altogether imo

I doubt we are getting a Pokemon.
I can still see it, far more than Crash and Hayabusa (I'm not opening the can again I'm sorry but no), but I think it's another case of Bad Timing, especially considering Euden. I think Dragalia has so much going for it, almost as much as Hayabusa it's not even funny.

We've had the screw attack item alongside playable Samus's up-b since Melee, as well as the Hocotate Ship for both Olimar's FS and an item since Smash 4.

Fair. Even so, much as I think Lip would be cool she does need a bit more popularity worldwide. Maybe a new Panel de Pon game after so long, released worldwide could do the trick

I mean, it does seem that the general trend so far across both games with DLC content is that Smash DLC has gotten used for 3 things: veterans (now moot since there are none left to add), 1st party characters from recent games, or 3rd parties. I think there is a sense of realism with which you have to approach some of these things. You certainly wouldn't hear any complaining from me personally if they decided to offer a revival of an older Nintendo character as DLC, but the history doesn't imply that it's likely.

And that's coming from someone who would be equally pleased by seeing Lip or Ayumi Tachibana compared to much more famous and prominent 3rd parties. I'm just of the opinion that picks like those are really "base game or not at all".
Now do you see why I'm hoping Sephiroth gobbled up the budget?

I don't think Lip will ever be seriously considered unless Panel de Pon/Puzzle League gets an all new game with her in a starring role that has a proper worldwide release.

Mysterious Murasame Castle getting ROM dumped onto the western 3DS eShop didn't really do anything for Takamaru in the long run, so I don't think it would for Lip, either.

What even constitutes “base game material”? We had Brawl newcomers like Sonic and Diddy in the same game as someone like Lucas and Smash 4 newcomers like Mega Man and Pac-Man in the same game as Shulk.

Plus, PDP on NSP is still in Japanese, even though there’s YouTube guides to navigate the menus

I don't think that's a good comparison.

Adapting a fighting game character into another fighting game and keeping their moveset faithful is important. An RPG character not bringing their party members along with them is less of a big deal and already happened with :4cloud:in Smash 4 and :ulthero2::ulthero3::ulthero4: in Ultimate.
There's the fact though Donald and Goofy aren't video game characters not having originate as such.
What do you think Disney was like for Nintendo when they asked for Sora?

A. Absolutely! You can have Sora for free! You don't even have to mention our company name! In fact you can have the rights to Sora forever! You can have our characters, our theme parks, our movie licenses, our money, screw it! Take everything! You're the new Disney!
B. Sora costs millions of dollars to be in Smash... just ignore the fact we gave him away to toy manufacturers for way less than that.
C. nyeh heh heh heh! We own you now Nintendo, you will plaster all of the Disney characters into Smash Bros (strokes the long stringy and curly end of it's mustache)
D. Nah I want Mickey Mouse in smash. Sora is lame.
Most likely B.

To be fair, I don't think being unceremoniously put on the 3ds eShop was ever gonna do anything for any other character either.

I mean, I kinda don't think characters like Palutena, Little Mac and Shulk would of been made DLC for Smash 4 had they not been included in the base roster.

"Has so much going for it"... Like what exactly? The fact that his game is not available anywhere in Europe, besides the UK? lmfao

Look, I like Euden and I wouldn't complain if he got in. But I honestly don't see him as likely as other characters, and especially not on the same level as Ryu Hayabusa. But hey, that's just me though.

Alright, let's play a game. Pitch me a first-party character and I'll evaluate their chances. See if we can expand our horizons, or at least jot down a couple darkhorses who may have a shot, slim as it may be.

Shulk and Palutena maybe, but I have no doubt Little Mac could have easily been DLC due to long-time fan demand. If there was more DLC for Smash 4 instead of Smash Ultimate being worked on, I’m absolutely certain K. Rool and Wolf would have been some of those choices.

Which is sort of the big difference between Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate - there is no point in saving any character for the next game because a new title is not going to be worked on so soon after 2021 as the Switch is only in the middle of its lifespan.

Punch-Out is even big enough to be referenced in Family Guy. So Dinoman can't do his "my 5 year old cousin doesn't recognize this first party, they can NEVER EVER EVER be DLC" shtick.

I think I'd be more inclined to believe in Euden's chances if Dragalia Lost content had ever appeared in a Switch or 3DS game. As is its one of the few first party IP's that's never actually been on a Nintendo console, seemingly because the company hasn't seemed keen on taking it anywhere outside the mobile division.

I have a bit more confidence in a retro Nintendo character getting in as DLC than most people. I don’t think it’s likely, but it could happen. Sakurai has added a character like Ice Climbers, Pit, or Duck Hunt every game since Melee, yet Ultimate still hasn’t gotten one. It makes me think that he had one in mind, but didn’t prioritize it since Ultimate could only have a handful of newcomers. A random Mach Rider, Lip, or Takamaru being added as a curveball DLC feels possible.

I mean...the Lip Mii costume uses Lip's Stick(although the Mii Costume version is more toy-ish compared to the item), so if Lip were in the next game, I don't think showing Lip's Stick before than would mean anything.

Maybe just my own interpretation, but I saw :ultpiranha: as a (slightly delayed) base-game newcomer along the same lines as :4duckhunt:: a character dating back to the '80s that people know and recognize but is a surprising, unlikely pick as a playable character.

Ahhh, Smash 4 speculation. When Third Party characters were seen as NEEDING some Nintendo presence to be seen as potential newcomers (instead of "ACHTKUALLY; THEY APPEAR IN A 1 SECOND CAMEO IN A RANDOM DS GAME SO THEY TOTALLY COUNT NYEK NYEK NYEK") and Nintendo characters were the norm.
Even at the time that argument was kinda missing the point.

Yeah, Cloud barely ever appeared on Nintendo systems. But Cloud was still representing Final Fantasy as a whole, a franchise with a ton of presence on Nintendo platforms. Same with Joker if one considers him a MegaTen rep.

Kratos would be another level removed. As not only has the character not been on Nintendo platforms, but his entire franchise hasn't either.

I associate Plant more with the G&W, R.O.B. and Wii Fit side of things and less with Ice Climbers and Duck Hunt. Obviously, it isn't a rule that every Smash game needs both a retro character and a crazy left-field character, but it has been a trend in most Smash games.
If we do get a retro 1st party pick. Who do you guys think it would be?
It's really tough to guess. Excitebiker is my favorite option, though. I love the character's design and a character being constantly tethered to a bike sounds really cool to me.

Considering what challenger packs have to come with, I think we'll have to jump up a couple generations and have the retro rep be "retro" as in "at least almost two decades old" and not "NES". Because I can't see them filling out a challenger pack for Takamaru or Mach Rider, unfortunately. Maybe Excitebiker if he represents later Excite games as well.

Actually, since Mach Rider started out as a toy, the challenger pack could come with spirits representing Nintendo toys, but music is still a problem.

Of course we got a Retro rep you fool, you buffoon, you absolute moron.

We got Dark Samus and Meta Ridley smh

Actually you can play as Kratos on the Switch version of Fortnite. It's a Nintendo appearance as absolutely tiny as it is

Alright, let's see...

PROS:
  • Splatoon 2 sold like crazy
  • Potential hints for something new with the Save Our Salmons 2020 art
  • Could potentially support a pack with Octo Expansion content
CONS:
  • The Inklings were promoted pretty prominently in the base game. Nintendo may feel that Splatoon as a whole is represented well enough with the Inklings.
  • Smash in general doesn't really favor DLC and post-launch content. From a marketing standpoint, this is probably because the base game is more than likely going to be bought before the DLC and make more money, so it makes more sense to push that instead.
  • The Save Our Salmons thing doesn't necessarily have to prominently feature the Octolings, so even if there's more Splatoon content down the line the Octolings might not be at the forefront.
  • Callie and Marie received Mii Costumes with Min Min's wave. I find this to be particularly damning, as it would be very odd to not have the Splatoon content come with a Splatoon fighter, even if they're from the same game.
Persona Miis came with Joker, DQ Miis came with Hero, SNK Miis came with Terry, Ninjara came with Min Min, Minecraft Miis came with Steve, and Final Fantasy Miis came with Sephiroth.
As such, Splatoon Miis would most likely have to come with a Splatoon fighter, but they didn't. Yeah...
Overall: Sorry guys, not really feeling it.

Granted, but that's the "ACTUALLY, Cloud is in Theatrhythm!" situation, only without the decades of Final Fantasy history with Nintendo supporting it.

I'll be annoyed if Octolings get more than an Echo spot.

I agree with you, but that's what Disney does to their characters in fighting games.
If Disney refused to budge on that, I'm sure Sakurai would just pass on the character. The same way he threatened to pass on Pac-Man if he couldn't get his classic look.

after two years he will automatically removed from all copies of Ultimate and replaced with Square Enix's low cost ringer, Benjamin from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
**** yeah!

We got some options like:

Tamagon from Devil World
Mach Rider
Balloon Fighter
Urban Champion
Bubbles from Clu Clu Land
Excitebiker
F-Type from Stunt Race FX

If had to go with most likely, I'd say Mach Rider stands the tallest.

looks at Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories

I mean, that was practically the game used to justify Cloud long before Theatrhythm and Final Fantasy Explorers.
