Touhou also has a decent western following, you got cosplayers, TONS of memes, a fair amount of western Twitch/YouTube streamers playing those games
Yeah, even outside of the more dedicated gaming scene I still see it being referenced and talked about. I wouldn't say it's anywhere near mainstream, but obscure might be a bit of a stretch too.

I'd say Touhou is not so much obscure in the West as it is a more niche interest in comparison to other indie franchises which simply have more attention and recent relevance in the region. Its a scene that's constantly has new faces emerging so its a tricky situation for it try and gain more in popularity.

What if we get Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry spirit events?
I don’t care one bit about Hayabusa so it wouldn’t bother me. I’d be a bit disappointed no Dante, but on the flip side this is how Phoenix can still win!

Ace Attorney Spirit Event immediately after

...****.

It's quite telling that it was using the same background as Byleth's teaser
I can't believe you done this.

Then again, I'm puretty sure even Steve got the "Literal Who" label (even if very infrequently) by hardcore detractors.
Likely because he's not technically a household name.

"Hey mom, they added Steve!"
"...That tells me nothing."
"From Minecraft."
"Oh cool!"

I'd be sad but also very surprised. A spirit event for Ninja Gaiden I could see it... but a DMC spirit event would feel very random to me. Not because I want Dante, but because so far I'd say spirit events have been mostly for series with some kind of association to Nintendo (if we talk about third party franchises).

Devil May Cry getting spirited would be better than nothing for sure, but for me it would be really strange. In my opinion DMC is either getting nothing or a playable character.

If a Capcom series is going to have a spirit event I'd say Ace Attorney or Monster Hunter are more likely for the reasons I mentioned before.

Yeah, Touhou's not really associated with any one game (Though the EoSD cast are consistently popular). It's mostly something that's kind just there, between all the fanworks, music, and characters, to the point that some people might not even realize they're surrounded by Touhou content. Even if you haven't heard the name, you'd probably at least heard one of these songs

A pretty big one, actually. @Ayumi Tachibana brought up a big 5chan post from around the release of SSBU's base game, detailing negotiations for characters who didn't show up. It got Steve and Erdrick right, went into detail about how Sora and Geno were considered by dropped, and noted that Sephiroth was in consideration as well. Aside from that, it also mentioned that Chun-Li was dealt for but "was replaced by Ken somehow," and both Lloyd and Yuri were in the planning stages but didn't show up either.

This one ended up called stuff like the "Chun-Leak" or "Tales of Chun-Li" despite the fact that both only got a sentence dedicated to them, so here's the important parts:

"Chun-Li was planned but replaced by Ken somehow. Lloyd and Yuri were also in the planning stages, but they disappeared too.

That's it. That's the post."
So, if true, it only removes a few options.

At this point I wonder if the second Bamco character will be a tamogotchi. (Should be a Digimon to settle the playground grudge-match with Pikachu but this is Japan we're talking about.)

I'd be annoyed, since it would mean that all four of the characters that I thought were likely back in October (Geno, Dante, Ryu Hayabusa, and Impa) would have been unceremoniously turned into Mii costumes or post-launch spirits.

I brought this up yesterday, but... that really does look like Rayman trapped in ice on battlefield...

I just booted the game up and I'm looking around with the camera. The texture isn't created by a cloud, or a flag, or the stone behind the ice. The texture stays the same no matter what angle you look at it with. And I'm not necessarily saying this is some kind of proof that Rayman is coming to Smash or anything, but I'm pretty sure there's some kind of specific texture that's used inside the ice... and it really does look like Rayman, at least to me.

Actually, the reason it got attention is that it could potentially lead into Chun-Li or a Tales rep being added. A popular theory is that FP2 consists entirely or partially of characters who were planned but didn't make it. ARMS would've gotten a fighter had it come sooner, we know Steve's been in development since around the SSBU base game planning, and Sephiroth is rumored to have been the result of dealing for Cloud for Wii U, 3DS, and Ultimate. Plus, it's just pragmatic to tie up loose end with some extra deals floating around.

Of course, nothing says they need to come back, and even if it's true the rumor could ultimately lead to nowhere.

Touhou and Fate are in the same category but While you might not have played a game or hell might not even know the series name, You have seen something on the internet related to it, be it a song or a character or something.
"That thing I might have seen referenced a couple times but have no idea what it's called."

That's practically the definition of obscure.

My man I hope you use TimeSplitters time shenanigans to become dictator of the Earth because this is a great roster.
I'd be willing to grant him his crazy Cortez pick if it got us everyone else on that list.

That’s not necessarily true, there was only enough development time for 6 non-Echo newcomers in the base roster with 3 of them being ballot choices, two of them being some of Nintendo’s newest icons and one being a Pokemon, with Pokemon itself being reserved a slot. Even if timing wasn’t an issue, it still would have been unlikely that ARMS would have gotten a character in the base game as Sakurai never said it would have been guaranteed one.

Yeah, should've clarified that. Was mostly just making a quick summary.

We've been over this, if someone tells you X looks like Y and you try seeing it, it'll look like Y to you, an example I saw is Fallout New Vegas using a Rorschach test and seeing someone say one ink blot looked like 2 bears highfiving and I cannot see anything else but 2 bears highfiving in it because of it

Leak 2 can be considered more of a wishlist as it also mentions Ninjara, who got Costume’d.

KOS-MOS/Reimu/Crash could be true but only if either Reimu or KOS-MOS are next. Crash wouldn’t be a solid confirm either way
I don’t believe the Rayman/DoomGuy thing but it’s funny that he listed both Min-Min & Ninjara, since Sakurai said Ninjara almost made it in over Min-Min. Maybe that poster shares a hivemind with Sakurai lmao

What if we get Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry spirit events?
If it happened soon, I’d be sad since Ryu & Dante are two of my most wanted characters. But if it happens past FP10, I’ll say it’s better than nothing.

I’m going to be very cautious about FP10 so I don’t get burned like I did with:ultincineroar::ultbylethf:. I like those two but they definitely weren’t who I wanted as the last characters for those cycles.

Part of me thinks if Rayman is among the final 3 that him being in the ice has something to do with his trailer such as him breaking out.

Also remember the cloud in King K. Rool's reveal trailer that looked like Rayman's head?

I don't care very much about Rayman tbh, I'm just making an observation. And yes, I'm aware of what a Rorschach test is...

I'm not quite as sure about the cloud honestly. I think the shape is too vague to determine. Whatever is textured in the ice is much sharper and has a pretty clear color distinction too. I'm not necessarily saying it's Rayman either, although it does somewhat look like him, it's clear some kind of texture is used in the ice from the fact it doesn't change at different angles and I think it's pretty interesting.

That's certainly one question to ask.... but the REAL question is... what if we get a Beavis and Butt-head spirit event? Huh? Whaddaya gonna do then? What reaction would ya have THENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN???

For real though... Devil May Cry wouldn't phase me much since I never played it, but a little part of me would be a teeny bit upset with the loss of Ninja Gaiden since that by extension would mean the loss of Dead or Alive (even if it is just music or spirits) and THAT.... makes me a sad kid.

I don't think that'd be the case. Ryu is a guest character in Dead or Alive, not the other way around, so a Ninja Gaiden centric Spirit Event wouldn't really have anything to do with Dead or Alive.

EDIT: A Dead or Alive Spirit Event might put a damper on Ryu's chances if he is a Spirit within the event though.

I'm operating under the possibly unlikely assumption that it's possible Ryu Hayabusa, if a FIGHTER pack, could bring some DOA characters as spirits or a DOA song or two. The likelihood of DOA coming WITHOUT Hayabusa is... probably pretty low as much as I hate to admit it. If DOA would come to Smash at ALL, it'd be through Hayabusa most likely.

Though, if they WANT to add Kasumi without the Hayabusa.... I wouldn't stop them

It could go either way. If Ryu has a big enough fanbase within the Dead or Alive community, they might get a bone there, though I do think it's more likely that there'd be a heavy focus on NES Ninja Gaiden, with a little bit of reboot Ninja Gaiden thrown in, and nothing from Dead or Alive except for maybe some throws or something.

Yeah I know but.... a man can hope! Let me belieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve

Regarding Hayabusa in DOA... I think he's probably like the only male character in DOA that people care about, and that's because he originated in other games and such (ok to be fair maybe Hayate/Ein too, but not as much as Hayabusa). They keep tryna push Jann Lee since he won two of the tournaments officially but like... I think everyone knows that the girls are what people come to DOA for, heck most of the (irresponsibly expensive) DLC is for them with like, SOME for the guys. PERSONALLY SPEAKING, if they were to cut all the guys from a hypothetical DOA7.... I wouldn't be too upset. I think like, Hayabusa because he's a legend even outside of DOA and then like... Eliot because he's such an easy target and Hitomi scarin him is like, priceless. He's such a dweeb, he's kind of the Koukin of the bunch. Wouldn't miss him if he was gone though... wouldn't really miss Zack and his antics either... but take away Tina or Mila though and we RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!

So I asked Gamefaqs this question, and the responses were mixed on it (which I expected) so I want to ask you guys too

How would you feel (as in your personal opinions) if these were the Final 3 characters?

Scorpion
Shadow
Elma

It's my prediction list, and Since I know the characters on this list aren't really considered to be the Front runners of the pass, and the Former Two are considered to be almost impossible at times, I thought the opinions would be interesting, especially if for some reason this did turn out to be the pass?

Shocked, mostly. Don't mind Elma or Scorpion. As for Shadow, depends on how much he borrows from Sonic.

any 2nd sonic character is great as long as they aren't a clone, scorpion would be really suprising given the... nature, of mortal kombat and elma is meh, not much of a xenoblade fan tbh

Scorpion: extremely happy, the more I think about him, the more he's growing to be one of my most wanted (I don't talk about him too much tho because I don't see it happening).

Shadow: don't really care, I would rather have Eggman or Tails for a second Sonic rep. I would probably be exctited for a new Sonic stages more than anything, because Sonic have a lot of cool environments that are still untouched in Smash. Also Shadow is not my most wanted for a assist trophy promotions.

Elma: Never played Xenoblade X but I would be happy. I think she could be fun and this game really deserve more content in Smash. From what I've listened Xenoblade chronicles X soundtrack is very good and the stage could have a great aesthetic.

So overall I'd be relatively happy. Not like my personal 10/10 pass, but it would be a great end imo.

Elma I would LOVE! The lack of Xenoblade X music is CRIMINAL! We absolutely NEED "Uncontrollable" at the very least! I would love to hope that there's a Xenoblade X Definitive Edition coming to Switch that Smash would promote via DLC fighter... whether that actually HAPPENS or not, well we'll see.

Scorpion I really don't think is coming. Mortal Kombat without the fatalities really isn't Mortal Kombat at all, and Smash obviously isn't gonna have fatalities.

Shadow the Hedgehog ohhhhh I would LOVE him... IMMENSELY. Actually I would love... just about ANY second Sonic character (except Classic Sonic, any of the Zeti or Boom Sonic. Classic and Boom, those two would be probably the only two characters, Sonic or otherwise, that would actually upset me, Zeti would fill me with meh). I honestly don't think it's happening though. Would LOVE to be wrong! It's Sonic's 30th, another Sonic fighter would be welcome (especially since Sonic is one of my favorite game series ever!) Even if it's Blaze the Cat as "kinda like Sonic but fiery and with different moves) or Emerl as "the ultimate echo fighter with moves and attacks and animations lifted from multiple different characters" or even "Dr. Eggman in the Egg Walker" or "Metal Sonic as a floatier echo of Sonic" or even "Cream the Rabbit with a Chao Garden stage". You could add just about any Sonic character and I'd be a happy kid! I've got a sneaky suspicion that Sonic, as much as I love him and as much as the 30th anniversary is upon us, just isn't happening. Would LOVE to be wrong!
