Wonder how Pokemom cuts will be next game.

I mean, aside from Pichu and maybe Incineroar (if you have bad taste), none of them are very easy to cut.

Now that you mention it, if we count all the votes for each CYL winner, then Gatekeeper and Edelgard are the most popular male and female, respectively. The latter being the most popular of all.
Another fallacy because we'd need to count how many votes in total happened in the CYLs polls. Not to mention previous winners are always removed, so there's no way to gauge if Gatekeeper truly is more popular than Ike using those alone.

The best way to gauge things is probably another poll they have; A Hero Rises. IIRC, it's usually dominated by Three Houses when they do it these days.

This just goes to show how terrible a choice Corrin was back then and how bad it still is. There's people who have sworn to never touch a Fire Emblem game because of Smash, and that vitriol can be traced to Corrin's inclusion.
Yup.

Fire Emblem had 2 characters in Melee with a 3rd in Brawl and 3 more for Smash 4 which made fans hate said series.

Got even worse when Byleth was the last fighter of DLC 1.

The number of characters isn't as much of a problem as the number of them that are derivatives of Marth.

Literally half the FE characters are just a variation of him, to the point where haters just assume Robin's the only unique one due to having a meter of some kind.

Edelgard is my queen. I would have been so happy if she made it. Would have been fascinating to see character war part 2 in the community. People were at eachothers throats from the game itself, and if Edelgard made it over other leaders oh my lawd the fighting would have been hilarious.

Personally I'd say...

Very safe to assume they'll be here forever:
Pikachu
At least the Charizard part of Pokemon Trainer
Mewtwo

Extremely likely should their popularity not be replaced by a new pokemon in the meanwhile:
Lucario
Greninja

Thin Ice:
Jigglypuff (if they ever consider cutting stuff from the original 12)
Pichu
Incineroar.

Frankly, they were likely to never touch a game in the first place.

Take it from me, someone who didn't play a FE until after Corrin was included, not because of them in particular, I just had preexisting interest.

If anything I've seen a few people purchasing Three Houses post-Byleth, not to the same level of the Aegis causing interest in XBC2, but still it's something.

The funny thing about Corrin? I had a complete disinterest in the character when they were revealed in Smash 4 and didn't even bother buying them for my copy. When I did finally get around to playing as them in Smash Ultimate, finally experiencing the one returning fighter in that game that I'd never actually ever tried?

They were actually pretty fun to play with. Not quite as good as Marth or now Byleth in terms of FE characters, but still fairly easy to get some enjoyment out of.

Thats all it is with mostly everyone. No one wants Disney touching their precious lil smash
Ignoring the fact two disney games are going on switch
Exactly. I may not like Disney as a corporation, but when it comes to video games they’re rather lenient and mostly outsource development to other companies. The classic examples being the old NES Capcom games like Ducktales.
Can you actually believe some people think that Sora being in Smash will somehow pave the way to Disney buying out Nintendo? It’s so silly.

I predict that if the next game has a much smaller roster the Pokémon side of it is going to look super weird.
  • :ultpikachu:Well...no one in their right mind would cut Pikachu.
  • :ultjigglypuff:Would only be dropped in the event of a hard reboot I think. The original 12 are otherwise too important to the series.
  • :ultpichu:Will unfortunately get dropped like a rock. I wouldn't be surprised if Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was its last hurrah.
  • :ultmewtwo:Will either be kept due to its importance or treated like Akuma and get cut a lot, but also come back as DLC a lot.
  • :ultpokemontrainer:Is a weird one since it wouldn't be controversial to say that the trainer itself is mandatory, but they're also 3 characters and 2 of them are harder to justify the smaller the roster is. Charizard will stay no matter what though.
  • :ultlucario:It's so popular I'd be shocked if it skipped a Pokémon game let alone Super Smash Bros.
  • :ultgreninja:Also really popular, but if the cuts start happening it's gotta be somewhere...
  • :ultincineroar:I am confident that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is both the first and last appearance of this fighter, which is a shame because it's my favorite heavy.
I think they'll have at least 5 members in any given base roster, but we'll probably start getting super weird configurations later on down the line.

I'm personally very glad we didn't get Edelgard because well...

To put it nicely...

I do not like her very much. :4pacman:
Edelgard would've been a bad choice to represent Three Houses anyway since it'd imply Black Eagles is the canon route when the game goes out of its way to show that there isn't any canon route, so that it's ultimately your decisions that matter the most.

In other words, picking her over Byleth would've misrepresented the game in a big way, something Sakurai tries to avoid.

not to the same level of the Aegis causing interest in XBC2
Being fair, we always get a Xenoblade character when Chuggaconroy LPs a game from that franchise. Pyra and Mythra were inevitable. :4pacman:

Something I’ve learned is that if everyone and their mom are “leaking” a certain uber popular character like Sora, Chief, Doomguy or Dante

99% of the time they’re not actually in the game

and vice versa, if it leaks someone you don’t expect… they’re probably in

When it comes to Fire Emblem in future Smash games, here's basically how I see it.

Marth, Ike, Robin, and Byleth stay, no questions asked. Marth is the first lord and franchise face, as well as a Smash mainstay. Ike is a heavy swordsman that offers a unique playstyle and is one of the single most popular characters in the franchise. Robin comes from Awakening which revitalized the series, and also uses magic, which Sakurai was on record as having said was important to showcase for Fire Emblem. Byleth is the main lord of by far the most popular game in the franchise.

Where it gets dicier is with the remaining four: Roy, Chrom, and Lucina's movesets are derivative of other characters, and despite this making them easier additions, there's also precedent that cuts go for these types of characters first. Lest we forget Young Link, Pichu, Roy (lol), Dr. Mario, Lucas, and Wolf, who were all cut at one point or another. Some of them could return, but it's far from a guarantee like the four above.

Corrin, meanwhile, is the one that I am absolutely positive will be dropped despite being a unique character. They're a highly controversial addition from an equally highly controversial set of games, and Corrin also lacks the merits of the four I feel are safe, while also not being an easier addition like Roy, Chrom, and Lucina. Corrin is one of the only characters in Smash where I genuinely wonder if the people who want them gone outweigh the number who want them back, as their addition to Smash is controversial even within the Fire Emblem fanbase. Either way I think they're the cut that would upset the least amount of people, and let's face it, there will be cuts next time.

One curious thing, though, is the status of Roy and Chrom. Both are popular, but especially when looking at the context of Smash. Roy's return was heavily wanted for Smash 4, while Chrom was a big fan request for 4 and his ballot results led to him getting into Ultimate. But here's the interesting part: Chrom still features in Robin's Final Smash and victory screen, meaning that he'll need to be modeled for the next game anyway if Robin returns. Because of his model already being there, he'd have enough of a foot in the door where I could feasibly see him returning, even if it means he'd be returning without Roy. Chrom is the only Echo who I could see return without the character they're echoing.

Now all we need is XC3 to bring it to completion...

Wasn't this the fanbase that really really wanted that parent-murdering space dragon and celebrated shirtless meteor man?

I didn't think the ethics of fictional characters was a big concern to us.
It’s Edelgard; She’s a girl, and she’s also Fire Emblem. Those two facts are the only reasons people need to get angry.

If he ever LPs Xenoblade X, I can't way to hear Rie's reactions to Elma's Smash trailer :4pacman:
Sigh too bad he said he’s holding off for a Switch port cuz the Wii U will probably close its multiplayer servers soon or something…

but one day

Chrom could've been a unique character and I'd have been cool with it. He's an awesome character and deserves the best.
TBF he did get a meaningful Echo treatment and plays substantially different from Roy.

In the end I'll happily take that.

Pretty good list though I'd keep Lucina. Roy is super hard to figure out since he's 100% Melee nostalgia.
Melee nostalgia is not everything these days. Ultimate did buff him significantly across the board - except for his grab - and now he has a significant competitive following (not sure about the casual side of things, but still).

That and him coming second in the first CYL poll does help him quite a bit. They don't neccessarily guarantee him a spot in Smash 6, no, but I def think those two are enough to say that he's no longer fully Melee nostalgia.
