Once again there are three absolutes when it comes to Smash: a new Pokemon, a new Fire Emblem, and a new surprise fighter (ala Duck Hunt, R.O.B, etc)
Four. A new Pokemon, a new Fire Emblem, a new surprise fighter, and, so far, a new Nintendo IP.

Yeah, unless Sakurai got his hands on Legends Arceus concept art around that time if we're getting a Pokemon it would probably be a Gen 8 Pokemon.
Depends on how early the starters were locked down. I can see them knowing that they would be bringing back old starters back then, but it’s very possible they weren’t sure which trio exactly would star. Would be awkward if Sakurai was working on Decidueye and Arceus would feature Sceptile and the executives would just be like “I can’t shake the feeling I forgot something” the whole time

I feel like considering Sakurai specifically mentioned Decidueye, he may have had a hand in Rowlet's role as one of the starters for that game if Decidueye's the final character.
But that's getting into conspiracy theories that I don't actually believe nor am I comfortable talking about.

Yeah. I don't expect Pokemon to make certain decisions solely because of Smash.

Either way I’m no nihilist when it comes to Cinderace. I’m not advocating for him specifically and I’m more fond of the Pokemon of Sword and Shield than I am of most of the community’s most wanted.

I mean, I don't think anyone doubted Decidueye would be under the Legend Arceus banner if they were added at this point.
It's just that Legends Arceus seems way too new to get into the DLC that likely got finalized around 2018-2019.
The thing with that though, is that all three starters are from previous games, so what they are/do is completely finalized. If that isn't actually the case and we're dealing with regional variants, then the situation could easily play out like Greninja's where he was added to the game on just concept art, especially since they probably won't be too far off from the original concept of archer owl, samurai sea lion, and...volcano hedgehog?.

To be fair, it would still be unusual due to the fact that the characters would be coming out 4 months before their game, but due to the nature of the release, I think it would be feasible.

Well, the Pokemon situation in smash is different to any other first party IP. We know Sakurai leaves a spot for Pokemon when a new smash game is in development and usually uses concept art from the Pokemon Company when creating a new Pokemon character. Based on what he said, he still gets the last word on which pokemon to add but at the very least, Gamefreak always give some suggestions on Pokemon.

By virtue of being the final slot, I can see that final slot being reserved for the new horizons of Nintendo, and Sakurai has specifically employed this method before with Pokémon. Might be the downfall of Sword and Shield (Since it was revealed while Fighters Pass 2 was decided, so it didn’t need to be the last character for that to work), but could work for Arceus (though the timing doesn’t mesh as well as it did before, and Sakurai might believe that a 2022 release might be a bit iffy to release a character for in 2021)

We don't know about that, especially considering that I don't know if they would decide to promote a 2022 game in 2019.

I don't think Sakurai would pick Rowlett over Decidueye since the latter has a more defined idea behind it, but this conversation has me picturing Rowlett with a Super Scope and it's the funniest thing I've seen all day.
It makes me think of a ninja-type character actually. Tiny bird swooping through the air to fire off sharp leaf-knifes. A character as big and humanoidish as Decid might lean more towards classic kinds of mobility, decreasing its uniqueness

EDIT: Yes, we don’t know what happened, or else this whole speculation ordeal might’ve been a tad easier.

I think it might be a character that Sakurai will end with his retirement for the 20+ years long project of Super Smash Bros.

Still, I think he may retire on being the leader for Super Smash Bros development. Of course, he isn't retiring on game development anytime soon.
Gotcha. That I can see, and to be honest I really want to see what the future holds for him. Sakurai is a brilliant game designer and as much as I love Smash, I don't want him to be confined to only working on one franchise.

Rowlett is pretty much just a cute owl with leafy wings at its core, so I kind of doubt they'd take it in the ninja direction specifically. Decidueye has the whole fantasy ranger trope going on, which hasn't really been touched by a character up until this point. That's not to say that Rowlett wouldn't be less unique than Decidueye, but it would likely wouldn't be as easy to focus a moveset around.

Decidueye is also a ghost somehow, so there's that angle as well.

It's funny.

I don't think the final character is gonna be Decidueye, but I did only say I will perform the DK rap if the final character isn't a Pokémon. I didn't specify a Gen 8 Pokémon, so Decidueye getting in means I not only get my most wanted character who I thought was completely impossible, but also that I still win the bet.

Which is exactly why it won't happen, why would you think Sakurai will let me have the satisfaction

I’d like to have a similar bet but the choices I have weird confidence in are still a bit too niche to tie my dignity to.
My previous bet was on Waluigi until I realized it wasn't as clever as I thought it was, so I retracted it in favor of this one, which is still not that clever but it makes much more sense.

All of my chips are on the table for Waluigi, and I'm not scared of losing them all because I know they are gonna add him to the game.

But fr, someone said something about tweets being deleted and that it all aligns toward “her” comeback. We still dunno what it is
I mean, why do you care soo much lol.

Explanation would be appreciated sure but, I mean, he also thinks Rapper Mario was a ploy by Nintendo to throw us off the trail sooooo....
