Sure, DLC for Smash is a more recent thing, but what isn't recent is how Pokemon has been slotted for new game releases consistently and the only outlier is a returning veteran who is the most requested.I don’t think a Pokemon is coming either, but your reasoning seems off. You say we’ve never had pokemon dlc except mewtwo...but we’ve had dlc for only 2 games now so choosing to exclude a pokemon dlc that we did get from such a small sample size seems off. And yes we’ve skipped several pokemon gens, but not ones with release dates so conveniently close to Smash while dlc is on the table.
And actually, the release date isn't close to Smash at all. Ultimate started early development in late 2015 and dropped late 2018. SwiSh was first announced in mid 2017 which likely means it started development in either late 2016 or early 2017, although there have been cases were games were announced during the early planning stages. It didn't drop until late 2020, almost two years after Ultimate, and would have been in mid-development when Ultimate was in late development, which oddly enough could have been the perfect time to pull a Greninja...but why put in a brand-new Mon for a game that won't be out until almost two years later?
You may be thinking that this is the perfect opportunity for them to get in as DLC, but the Spirit event suggests otherwise, and we can't just say that something which kills chances for RE or Origami King or Astral Chain doesn't kill chances for Pokemon just because 'hurr durr, GameFreak go burr'. This is being inconsistent when the situation is the same, the situation being a franchise getting a Spirit event after the base game. Sure, they COULD be added to a Gen 8 character's Spirit Board, but the only situation thus far is Min Min, and those Spirit were base game. In addition, Byleth was originally supposed to have their presentation in Dec 2019, with the presentation recorded in I believe Nov 2019, and Pass 2 would have already been finalized at this time since it's announcement was part of their presentation. The Gen 8 Spirit event was in Nov 2019, and the chances fall even lower when you add in that it's likely all 11 DLC characters were decided upon early on in 2018 rather than having huge gaps of time between negotiations.
Once again, TPC seems to not like Pokemon DLC outside of Pokemon games, which could be a big factor...but that isn't what is most important here.
Look at the characters we already got so far, and then remember who was PoN during the time of DLC selection. Kimishima wanted to strengthen relationships between companies, and Furukawa grew up a gamer and wants to please fans and let devs have more freedom. We already have one self-promo in Pass 1 and two in Pass 2. Nintendo essentially owns Pokemon, so there is nothing to strengthen here in regards to company relationships, and it could be argued that Furukawa had very little to do with this DLC selection but even so, as a man who tries to cater to fans, remember that Gen 8 is far down the list for requests and will likely die off entirely when it comes to the next Smash game. Furukawa would probably be more likely to push long-term requests or the most popular ones, neither of which are Gen 8.
Only Sith deal in absolutes, and regardless of what some might think of me, I am not a Sith.I do agree with your logic, but I used similar reasoning to argue that Byleth wasn't going to happen and then Nintendo struck me with the "YOU FOOL" stick. I think the chance is small but still realistic.
However, Byleth is a 'was gonna be base, game got delayed, now am become DLC' where as SwiSh was 'game was slated to come out in 2020 for an elongated period, too far into the future for base game'.
