i am going to realtalk for a second since i get the impression raziek's post was condescending (well maybe i dont really know my 2014 reaction image memes)

i did not find the video game, "fire emblem awakening" enjoyable to play through. after a certain point you are thrusted into a wide open map every chapter, you have overpowered units and the enemy had 100 weaker ones, you pick a formation then let them suicide on you and hope the rng doesnt say "f*ck this nerd time for a 3% crit.....". this probably sounds like i'm describing every fe ever but previous games in the series had a lot more intricate map design, i feel like in fe13 they designed maps to be environments first then just threw enemies everwhere, there are no tight quarters like previous games. this is especially noticable lategame where they just throw you in a giant open-ended map and place prepromotes everywhere. it's boring and if you die a lot it becomes outright tedious. nah's chapter, which i pointed out earlier, is the biggest offender - it's so spacious that if you have to restart even once it takes ****ing forever to get back to where you were previously, and the map itself isn't really interesting to play or anything. the game is just one huge giant grind

maybe it is different on higher difficulty levels, i don't know, but my general impression from what ive heard is that it isn't, they just give the enemies arbitrary buffs and like every single unit has some sort of super counter ++++ skill and you die if you attack them.

this isn't to say i disliked the entire game, i enjoyed the waifus and hasubandos for what they were (anna & henry are the best ones for you're information), i thought the pair up system was interesting, but overall the game was just not fun for me. i guess my opinion does not matter because i didnt bother pouring day after day into beating a series about royals who want to screw their siblings on the difficulty setting with the most inflated enemy stats and artificial difficulty (LOL fe10) though.

I don't disagree with anything in this post right here. (42803)

However, the important thing is that it has almost nothing to do with what you originally posted in 42799, which was complaining about FE13 not having battle-saves and then admitting that you only play casually, which made it really hard to take you seriously.

i dont see why they cant adhere to casual players with battle saves when theyre willing to put in an entire no-death mode ~_~

fe's system of "permadeath! but also you can be forced to restart an entire chapter if you're unlucky enough" can be absolutely painful, and battle saves go a long way toward fixing that without just beign lame like infinite saves would or ruining the novelty of the series (i dont want to play on casual mode because i think it just removes the weight of your choices entirely). imo IS not putting them in fe13 shows complacency on their part; a willingness to keep poor game design because it's always been like that and they know the consumer is gonna eat it up anyway

if the chapters themselves were less of a drag i probably wouldnt care (since i didnt in previous games...)

Man the auto save draft thing is pretty cool, but I very often type a post without posting and then it just stays there every time I view the thread.

im talking about the cool feature where if u play on the hardest difficulty level you suddenly have to count the enemy's range yourself just because

hence "artificial difficulty"

The game industry is frankly dismal in the efforts they've put into improving AI in comparison to the money thrown to improving graphics with Triple A developers being concerned that their games might be TOO hard. MUST BUILD MORE ELABORATE SKY BOXES.

might not apply to a tactical rpg but i remember reading a post on tumblr where a developer who actually worked in the industry discussed a game where the programmers made very competent and intelligent ai in a fps, but it made the game unfun because the enemies were so effective and difficult to see coming that the most efficient strategy was for the player to turtle, which was also very arduous

unfortunately i assumed id remember the blogs url if i ever wanted to read it again & then i didnt actually remember the blogs url.

in any case im inclined 2 think dumb enemies + clever level design that makes them threatening is typically the best way to go about things. but again also probably not in a fire emblem game i just thought this was interesting

I watched a Let's Play of The Stanley Parable and that was an example of a a low budget game that used narration + solid level design in order to create a solid game. ***Spoiler Alert ***
The Stanley Parable provides multiple choices for the player and gives them up to eighteen different endings for the 'paths' they choose with many of the paths overlapping one another and involving the player making a choice either cooperating or defying the narrator who tries to guide Stanley through only one ending the entire game. Although it's funny how in certain paths the narrator gives up and tries to push the player through to alternative endings based on how far from the main ending the player has gotten. Of course The Stanley Parable doesn't involve any form of AI because all of it is just pre-scripted material with event triggers, however the underlying trigger design is just so subtle and witty that it showed how even a simple game can be used to create a sophisticated message to be sent to the player.

ive yet to play that, i appreciate what ive heard about it but probably wont buy it any time soon cuz right now i buy games rarely and generally gameplay-based games are higher priority

also i found the blog post from like 5 seconds on google
What I find cool about this article is that it highlights how you can't make an AI "smarter" not only for fun factor, but physical limitations. Sure, the flanking tactic is more advanced, but in the same vein, once a player gets used to it, the AI doesn't adapt because there's no adaptation to be made unless the devs designed a way for AI to react if they are adapted to. Hence why the turtling in one corridor strategy is so effective, and the devs could for example force AI to react by using grenades in that situation, but once again, a player could just figure out a counter to those nades and then the AI may or may not be programmed to react in that situation. And this applies to every genre, in fighting games it's pretty much impossible to enhance an AI outside of adding artificial tech skill, pure randomness for any situation with multiple options, or just reading the player's inputs every single frame. Sure, maybe the AI could be set to use setups like fireball -> jump in -> mix up, but the way it decides when to use that would still be an algorithm that's easy to adapt to, or "read".

I saw in the same blog you linked, another blog that explains the AI of pacman and it's cool to see how you have an extremely advanced AI that heck, does appear "smart" in a certain way, until you know the actual algorithm behind how each ghost moves. http://gameinternals.com/post/2072558330/understanding-pac-man-ghost-behavior

there was a P.E. coach at my elementary school who would incessantly talk to himself on a daily basis, and it always came off as odd and arbitrarily contrived when he did it. it typically went something like this:

"hmm, should I go to the park today? nah, not interested. maybe i'll play ball instead? maybe, we'll see."

or

"man i hate that guy. hmph."

except that typically i'd never really hear the beginning or the end of his seemingly random out loud talks. but anyway, ever since elementary school with that P.E. teacher, i've always been conscious of whenever i talk out loud to myself because it can be a bit of a distraction to others and people might actually think i have issues if i do it LOL. but i actually do think that more often than not that speaking to yourself to sort out your thoughts is more efficient most of the time than keeping it all bottled up in one's brain

The only times I've ever caught myself legitimately talking to myself was when I was with my friend Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds or with my other friend, we call him FunGus. Other than that I just think to myself, which nobody can convince me is weird in and of itself. Cuz come on.

I didn't inititally respond because I'm not sure what would prompt one to do so. Are there a bunch of games coming out? Is that when Mario Kart is out? I need more info to comment.

Thought about making a comment about how Nintendo's line-up is garbage and that they have literally one game I want, but decided I didn't want to put in the effort to continue the conversation.
