I was looking through some Ufo info(Im kinda a geek on that stuff), and some ufo info related to the "end of the world" stuff. It reminded me about how there are a lot of people that think Dec.21st 2012 is doomsday. I figured it make a good topic to discuss. Ill point out support for all sides:

DEC 21st, 2012=Doomsday
Its coming. The human race as we know it will end, or so supporters say, and they point to several things:
1. Their main argument: The Mayan calender ends that day. And it has been dead on throughout history.
2.Nostradamus predicted that day for an asteroid to hit
3.a computer program( I forget the name, the once that searches te internet for predictions) points to the date as well.
What we do know scientificly is that the earth completes its pole shift that day.
This vid sums up this groups beliefs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11iCmzGnOI8

DEC 21st, 2012=Renewal

Many believe the date will not be doomsday, but a rebirth in society. Many Ancient cultures speak of this.
Some radicals(Im talking out the window hardcore guys) believe the 12th planet, Nibiru, will come to the center of the solar system. Supposidly the inhabits of the "X" planet taught The Sumerians their knowledge, hence rapidly advancing civilization.

DEC 21st, 2012=Nothing
Absolutely nothing special happens. Evidence:
1.Many, MANY people believed armageddon was coming earlier, it didnt.
2.Y2K anyone?

My Stand: I can sum my feelings up with something Jesus said. One of his apostles asked him when the end was. He replied along these lines. " Only the Father knows when that time will come". Im getting religious here I know, but I think only the big man upstairs knows when its game over earth. As most people here probably will, I think the 12 planet Nibiru thing is a load of it.

But yeah, I thought this would be an interesting thing to discuss. So, well, discuss! :bee:

The Mayan calendar doesn't even "end" on that day. The people responsible for perpetrating that myth have an over-romanticized and ill-informed view of Mayan civilization. 12/21/2012 is simply the end of one of their 5126-year calendar cycles, basically in the same way that 2000 was the last year of the second milennium.

The evidence points to world "ending," barring collisions with other celestial objects, when the Sun expands 4 billion or so years in the future and completely disintegrates Earth. Although the oceans will probably have long since boiled away by that point anyway; the end of the Earth is different from the end of humans on Earth.

nostradamus never predicted any such thing. he didnt predict anything else either - if he did then why couldnt we avoid it by reading his quatrains? oh right, the predictions only make sense AFTER the events happen and we get to creatively reinterpret them. how silly of me.

speaking of which, that sounds like a good topic... perhaps ill start a new thread later.

Pffft.

I have a friend who had started taking this stuff seriously, and seemed to be getting edgy over dying at 20ish. Frankly, it's all bull****.

I mean, come on.... the evidence is all just guesses and theories that come from the mouths of loons. Just... very loud loons.

LOL...when I read through it I didn't feel it was serious, then I read the part about the Mayans and got hella serious. Now, I'm skeptical after 10 hours of sleep.

I've always enjoyed reading about this doomsday prophecy. Personally, I'm not so sure. It could go either way.
And I think the computer program is a load of crap, because of course it's going to point out that 12-21-12 would be a doomsday, because I'm sure if you were to google "doomsday" 75% of the sites would most likely refer to that.
Will something happen? I'm sure a bunch of cults will kill themselves, thus pushing the gene pool in a slightly better direction. Other then that, who really knows?

Interesting, things like this often catch my eye but I don't actually have any fear of them coming to pass.

Or maybe the Mayans decided that a 5,000-ish year calendar was a bit overkill. They figured that they would probably have a more efficient way of making calenders by then. Which, incidentally, we do!

I think the actual theories are pretty bogus. I mean, is it possible they'll occur? Sure. It's also possible that pigs will grow wings and fly. But that's as likely as this doomsday theory.

However, you bring up a good point. What happens if there is no natural event that causes a doomsday, but people treat it like doomsday? What if some kill themselves to avoid experiencing doomsday? What if some do whatever they please because the world is ending, in their mind? Is it possible that idiots (which are abundant in this world) will make it "doomsday", whether it actually destroys all human life, or just destroys a lot? I wouldn't put it past people to do that, but we can hope that idiots will just let the day pass normally.

Honestly, that's my only concern for this so-called "doomsday".

I don't believe this. All the confused souls who believe this will be scared out of their minds when that day comes, to find out it's nothing.

I don't think the world will end, but I think something will happen. Not sure what though. And if nothing does then oh well.

And yea. The reason that the mayan calendar ends is because the mayans designed it to show that Dec. 12 2012 is the end of the age of Pisces and the start of the age of Aquarius. NOT the end of the world.

Just because the calender doesn't go on forever, doesn't mean that the world will end. Perhaps it just wasn't finished, but even if the calender was a finished product, there would be no evidence.

I would have to agree with you. To me it seems that the calendar is simply renewing itself, however it would put my mind at ease to know what happens when the cycle does renew.

According to the Mayans, there would be many disasters that would befall the world in the last 13 years of the calendar, but it would really begin 7 years prior to the countdown. (huh?) so in reality the 20 years would mark change in the world. ( I hope didnt misinterpret the articles I was reading) Also, many of these article say that the Mayans wrote that this time of change would force people to change and bring them closer in this new era. If we didn't change we were doomed, but if we banned together we would survive. (Boy would i like to live >_<)

This just sounds like someone is preaching to me, telling me to get along with others in sake of the earth's survival. I would like us(america) to get along with any country, but I just dont see that happening. Only time will tell for the calendar.

nostradamus never predicted any such thing. he didnt predict anything else either - if he did then why couldnt we avoid it by reading his quatrains? oh right, the predictions only make sense AFTER the events happen and we get to creatively reinterpret them. how silly of me.

The Mayans and Nostradamus predictions were probably some of the vaguest things ever written.
I agree with Snex, i believe that Nostradamus was so vague that his "predictions" became true due to the human mind. The creativity of a man's mind puts events to his "predictions" and try to find reasons to futher "prove" Nostradamus ' prophecies.

I do think the man was a genius, but ****. He was good at astrology as well as astronomy, but if he had some kind of reason to believe an astroid would hit us, than NASA or some other group would have seen such and would have tried to do something about it. The question is, would NASA tell the people of such a disaster? =/

The computer program theory is the only thing i absolutly refuse to believe. If i remember correctly, there was a similar program that said the same thing for 2000. Its eight years later and we are still here. =] This just doesnt seem to have an impact on the arguement.

If there is a renewal... that is only gonna happen if there is a disaster... plain and simple

If nothing happens, than it will just be four days before Christmas >_<

My take on it, it's going to be another day that we will not remember, except for the fact that people thought the world would end on this day xD (I doubt that people will actually read my post cus its the longest thing i ever wrote on the boards lol)

All I can say is, renewal wouldn't be a bad thing for society, since our society has been slowly declining over the years (just from my own views and opinions), but honestly, I say nothing will really happen, everything will go on like it is supposed to, with some people probably making some kind of prank to make it look like things are actually happening that may signal the end of the world.

I remember walking around downtown and there were people panicking on the afternoon of January 1st, 2000. They made it seem like the world was going to end, but that it just didn't happen at midnight, but it was going to happen at midnight going into January 2nd.. I can honestly say that my family had taken some cautionary steps just in case, but nothing ended up happening, which leads me to believe that nothing will happen on December 21st, 2012. Good for the Mayan calendar ending on that date and Nostradamus, it means absolutely nothing to me. It's just going to be another ordinary day of Christmas shopping.

I hate this kind of **** because people who don't know any better fall to these stupid remarks and false claims, going crazy over them.

And by the way people, it's scientifically impossible for the earth to suddenly stop spinning.
