Gonna key on a lot of things I read since I'm just catching up on Ray's support.
A lot of Nintendo franchises are getting license renewals so other companies don't snag anything. Which, to some degree, does show that at least have these games in mind.
As for Ray's current standing, I'm pretty sure Shovel Knight was ranking in around the upper half of the polls with Shantae before he got confirmed for an Assist Trophy. I don't want to sound like a downer, but it sounds like he may end up making a return to form as an Assist Trophy if anything at all.
That being said, I'd be more than happy to see him. Loved Custom Robo and I've supported Ray since the Project M voting thread days.
Real talk here. I did like the Hero's design or MC in CR:BR in the Gamecube era. Also, the expressions of the characters was great. Hopefully if we do get another game of the series, it is expanded but in the same vein as that.
unless my memory is mistaken, aren't Custom Robo's toys first and weapons second? if they were to be suits, would that essentially make them elaborate, weaponized cosplays?
it's a little unfortunate to see the copyright expired. i wish they'd just do something with the IP, literally anything other than just letting it die.

Could turn out like a Splatoon thing, lot of people are just messing around in their mech suits playing a game, but there's real threats out there where they can prove to be useful
I hate to admit it, but you might have a good point there. Well, moreso for Isaac than Geno. I don't think Geno would have much of an impact on Ray's chances...

With K.Rool now on the Roster (though he was my third choice), Ray 01 and Isaac are the last two characters I'd be happy to se in at this time. Well..besides Twilight Princess Ganondorf. Something about his redesign to his OOT-form bothers me greatly and I can't place it...might be the legs. I digress.
But between the lack of games, the middling to low sales, the largely (to my knowledge) average reception, and the removal of the Ray Assist trophy? Its not looking too great. Which is a shame, because Battle Revolution was a treat and I can't help but feel that a switch CR game is a grand idea.
(Also, I can't be the only one who smells the potential of a smash-like custom robo amiibo that becomes stronger as you train it).
Well Synaptic Drive is being made by a company called Thousand Games not NOISE so they couldn't make a new Custom Robo. I guess the former director of Custom Robo just left NOISE and works for them now.

Because Nintendo doesn't usually throw the rights of their games to different developers. I mean they also completely own Sin and Punishment and Golden Sun but they haven't let other studios tackle those either.

Btw, I'd take most of rays moveset from the opening cutscene for the custom robo game on gamecube.
He could have his machine gun, homing misstles, a bomb/grenade, and an attack where he slides forwar and blasts enemies point blank. There are more ideas in the cutscenes but those would be some of his highlights.
We got a lot of reveals and games that i want to try out certainly.
Daemon included and Final Fantasy, believe it or not. I want to try out some parts of the series for the first time to see what its the fuzz all about. VII mostly.
Also, Isabelle was something. We got epic characters like Simon, K. Rool or Ridley, so it was due for other demographics like cuteness getting a character, IMO.
Well now, that all sounds interesting in regards to Synaptic Drive...not to mention more likely to be profitable in the modern climate of competitive gaming. Daemon x Machina looks fun, I'm interested in what customization there might be beyond weapon swapping and human skill enhancement.
To be honest, I had thought of how it would be if Custom Robo were re-tooled to be a "proper" shooter for Nintendo. It was something that the company wanted, the desire for such being what eventually gave us the Splatoon Franchise (with how much money its raking in, no doubt there'll be more to the Splatoon universe...Splatverse?).
Make some sort of...What's the norm...3v3? 6v6? Pick a frame, pick your armaments, and then fight in third person...Course, you'd obviously be sacrificing a chunk of the charm of Custom Robo in the process. Sure you'd have the customization but...a dedicated shooter versus a close combat arena brawler with guns? Doesn't feel right.
------------------
Thinking about a moveset for Ray (namely Ray 01), I can't help but feel the creativity come along, so why not? Its a r ough idea for now, but I've grown a bit fond of it.
With so many guns means so many options, but I've largely decided to stick to the default/basic loadout for his specials. I've also decided to keep the gameplay and mechanics of our Shining Fighter close to my mind, along with taking inspiration from...well, the Mii Gunner of all characters, and a bit of Samus and Megaman.
Core Attributes:
- Two air dashes, like in the games. Low vertical lift but respectable horizontal movement. Useful for short-hop combat mobility and recovery.
- Low weight means easy to knock around. Prioritizes spacing and maneuvering enemies into an attack.
- Many normal attacks are projectile or energy-based...but some are or are not actually projectiles (like Mii Gunner and Megaman).
Specials:
UP-Special: Launch Pod
- (Using any pod, probably default) A little controversial, but making UP-Special launch pods that wander the map instead of a recovery feels right. They'd be quick to come out, but then coast around before detonating through target collision or a timer. Maximum of one-two pods. NEUTRAL-Special: Basic Shot
- (Using the default Gun) After the button press, the player has a limited time to input a direction to fire their three round burst. They could fire in one direction or up to three.
- Respectable damage for a projectile. Staggers versus knockback.
- Minor wind-down after firing, just like the games, prevents usage as a spamming tool. SIDE-Special: Basic bomb.
- (Basic Bomb) A quick-fired bomb that detonates after a period of time.
- Can either quick-fire toward the closest enemy with a simple input, or hold the command to aim the bomb. DOWN-Special: Acrobat Bomb
- (Acrobat Bomb) This attack does no damage, and triggers at Ray 01's feet. The move is quick and can be used once while airborne. Combined with a meteor effect shortly after activation, the Acrobat Bomb is a utility move for setting up combos, punishing recovering opponents, and getting a little extra boost in your own attempts to return to the stage.
- Could be UP-Special, but pressing down to blast yourself up feels, and pressing UP to launch pod missiles just feels cool in my head. Can't explain it, really.
- Yes, two bomb specials. I couldn't think of a good SIDE-Special that didn't give Ray 01 an unfair amount of recovery options.
Normal Move Concepts:
A tough category to fill, but with Megaman and Mii Gunner in mind, it can be a mixture of dashes, kicks, short-range shots such as from the gatling gun, or even outright hitting people with one of the Sword-shaped Weapons (Blade or Sword Storm). This helps to show that Ray 01 is a customizable fighter, but without custom moves and specials, it preserves balance and reduces needless complexity.
Overall, Ray 01 does not want to get hit by other fighters, thus the need for attacks that keep his hurtboxes away from his opponent are desirable. Combined with the air dashes, Ray 01 can get in for an attack before retreating to a point of safety and setting up their next assault...just like in the games.
Smashes:
(Can't neatly hide this part in a spoiler for some reason)
UP-Smash: Pod Strike/ Upward Arm Thrust?
- Possibly utilizing the prongs on their pod launcher to jab up at approaching aerial opponents? Or perhaps an upwards arm-thrust as some photos and victory poses depict him/it standing in. SIDE-Smash: Charge
- With two air dashes and the Acrobat Bomb, giving Ray 01 a third option for horizontal movement in the air felt dirty and unbalanced. Besides, in the custom robo games, Melee tackles are only performed on the ground.
- This would be one of Ray 01's more notable 'Kill-Moves', but would suffer from a little wind-down lag. It is the type of move you will want to dedicate to. DOWN-Smash: UNKNOWN
- Also no idea...perhaps some sort of angled Bomb shot or a leg sweep? Custom Robo and melee combat do not exactly work together. FINAL-Smash: Dragon Gun/Trap Combo?
- As all Final Smashes are quicker now, this could be as simple as utilizing the Dragon Gun for a powerful screen traveling shot, to a trap-style final smash that is just a flurry of combos before culminating in an explosion...my money's on Dragon gun, though.
It would be interesting if some folks took the "I'll make my OWN Custom Robo, with blackjack, and hookers!" route at some point while Synaptic Drive is around, similarly to the whole Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon feud. Most likely some indie studio.
