Well, on paper we have. The problem is that, except for very specific circumstances (like nutritional information[1]), it's not required to use metric. So even though the lawbooks say that we've adopted the metric system, in practice we haven't because the new system is not required to be in use, neither exclusively nor alongside the old system.

[1] Even nutritional information isn't truly metric. A dietary calorie (Calorie, with a capital C) in America is actually a kilocalorie (lowercase c). No, I don't know how that flies in court, but somehow it does.
