Let my sonic have it bros. Now I switched to Bowser jr in the earlier games after losing the first match of the set because I felt more comfortable with him and I was playing to win money except for the last link at 52:24. Because I didn't now Bowser jr vs Megaman at all. I've learned some things from watching but any advice you can offer on the matches would be great. Also this was at an offline tournament. I placed 4th out of 38 so overall I did something right, but it was mostly Bowser Jr getting me through everything after my first match in the tournament which I didn't bother to post up. So pretty much those are all of me losing. Lol. I know the quality and commentary isn't the greatest. But bare with it, my sonic is in need of help.

Going away from For Glory, I now started playing on SmashLadder, and here are my first few games there:

vs. :4littlemac:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMA4sFvZfgk
vs. :4marth:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8faRvhSvi5E
vs. :4olimar:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4ORFrSyplw

And one For Glory match leftover: :4pikachu:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4ORFrSyplw

Any and all advice you can give me is welcome, cause I really seek it now. More than ever.
Yo can I still get any criticism at all here? Tournament next week and I'm trying to prepare as much as possible for it, want to know what I need to work on next. Be as harsh as you want with your criticism, because I'm desperate now

Pretty please with a cherry on top?

@ Funkermonster Funkermonster I watched the marth match and it seems like u have been having the same problem as before: U would occasionally come to a dead stop with ur shield up or while trying to land a down smash. U have to keep moving and use down smash for reading rolls and edgeguarding.

I was told Phoenix was going to update it days ago... I'll try to talk to him again and if he doesn't think he can keep it up to date, is there anyone else that would like to take it over?

Alright, first off, you should probably make sure that if you're gonna post an image, it shouldn't be longer than the words you type.

2nd, I'm gonna tell you straight up I didn't finish watching the little mac vid after like two minutes. Without the context of a tournament match, I can't help but feel "This isn't a neutral." Moreover, this particular opponent made some shoty choices and I feel wasn't a good opponent for you in terms of practicing getting better.

Third, I'm going to give you some general advice: your approach and punish game need to some serious work. Why are you throwing out so many smash attacks? It becomes incredibly apparent with the Olimar that you just wanted to kill him at the end. If THIS player were better, he would've seen that you got desperate and sat in his shield and just punished you from there. There is absolutely nothing wrong with continuing to rack up chip damage. You only go for kills when you know damn well they're going to land, and do their intended job or put them in such an unfavorable position that the next you do IS kill them. By making yourself obvious, you lose a lot of what makes Sonic Sonic in the first place.

If you wanted to mash buttons and get results, play Lil' b****. Over here in Eggmanland, we play pinball and we're patient enough to get points.

... Anyway, why not try using some more SHFairs or something? You kinda like to use DA and Spin attacks a lot. It'd be a lot safer/it'd give you a mix-up if you used rising aerials from a short-hop. Get the right timing and you can do stuff when you land the the ground. I personally like to FTilt 'cause nobody expects it and stuffs.

Also, I didn't bother with the For Glory match. Sorry, I just don't do online. Evar.

Sorry this is probably too late for you; but, eh. I was out of the country for two weeks and was playing catch up in life.

Double post because nobody else seems to have any new content and I think some people would actually like to see me/another Sonic in action (you insane *******; why do you want to watch the most boring Sonic anyway?). Spare me the wrath of the spooky Haunter, please lord Cammy.

I'm sorry I let you down. ):
That was a reference to Umby being "Teh Umby" back in the day, and my disappointment in him for dropping Steak.

Not at all directed to you. I'm not that rude.

@ G GenericSonicFanName Thanks. I know I have a Forward Smash habit(I do it too much instead of only in situations) but my overall play style is to try and please the crowd. Glad you like it. At least someone does haha

What was the mind-set when you and your opponent(s) played out the friendlies? Were they more like "seriouslys?" and both of you were trying your heart out, or were they more just to pass time/relax/try out new characters/etc.?

Since you asked, I can look over the tournament replays; but, I want to know if I have to dissect the friendlies in the same manner or if I can go with a different view/ if I should even bother.

I know I take my friendlies pretty seriously. As I'm always trying to improve...I dunno about my friends though. I actually just uploaded a new set of friendlies I'd rather have dissected anyway because both of us were trying as we've got a tournament coming up next week. So I'll post the links to those.

Very well.

I feel I owe you a more proper critique; which, isn't something I can do after having been awake for 18+ hours and having gotten off work eight hours prior too. Given the circumstance, however, I am unsure of whether or not you need something quick to point out some things to try and iron out; or, if you are willing/able to wait for a more detailed analysis. And for whatever it's worth, perhaps the few quick tips are really all you'd need. So: if you need me to tell you anything more than what I am about to, inform me.

In the meantime, allow me to point out some things I noticed with all your friendly matches (I still haven't watched the tournament replays):

Everytime you have gotten back to the ledge, you have get-up rolled. I'm not even sure if I'm exaggerating here, I cannot count one instance in all of your matches where you did something besides that! Seriously, man, I figure it might be because you're fighting Rosalina & Chico and she, in particular, is troublesome to try and get back on the stage with; but, there's gotta be something else that you can do.

You Up-Smashed at the ledge quite a bit. It got you a kill once... out of dozens of tries. It's fine to use it once in a while to catch people off-guard or hard-punish a normal ledge get-up; but, It's not something to be done at the frequency you set.

You were rolling quite a bit. C'mon, son: you're playing the fastest thing alive! Why follow a speed limit of dodgerolls? Use your running speed to get around/away!

Your edgeguarding is poopy. I say this in the kindest manner I can because I myself am not any bit good at predicting or covering people's recovery options; but, I need you to be aware of this (if you weren't already) so you can make the effort to not be as bad at it as I am.

Your usage of Homing Attack was nerve-racking. In some instances, it was very clever and saved you from what would've otherwise been a fatal situation; but, other times, I felt you were only doing it because you didn't have anything else to do in mind. By that: I mean, you weren't doing it specifically to throw off your opponent and moreso just for the sake of "trying something out," which I can't allow you to do in good faith. It's a good mix-up option; not an ideal BnB. Especially not when Chico can take the hit and allow Rosalina to hit you freely.

My internet, at this point, is also out; so, I might just have to post this hopefully after I wake up and the problem fixes itself. But, until then:

Everytime you screechstopped with SCR, you UTilted. If you know that you're going to stop in front of him, why not grab or do something else? UTilt is nice, but it can be blocked.

You've gotta learn the spacing for Spring's autosnap. I'm not sure why you sometimes allowed yourself to jump above the ledge and get punished on the way down, there was no need for it.

Challenging your opponent by pursuing them with a Spring follow-up never really worked out in your favor. Hell, it sometimes cost you the game. If you aren't going to pay attention to your opponent's position/falling habits, why bother going all the way up there? Scaring them? Please, leave that to the professionals at Monsters Inc., you're better off waiting for them to come lower to the stage. At least, this way, you can use Sonic's speed to cover whatever ground they could possibly land. At that point, it just becomes a matter of "do they airdodge? Run in and hit them. Do they attack with a (retreating) aerial? Shield and get a hard (or quick if shield pushback is strong) punish. Do they land without any other action? Use a quick attack to push them out and reset the flow-chart. Going for early Uair kills is fine and all; but, you gotta be in the position to hit it in the first place... and I don't know if it's just me; but, I don't see (m)any scenarios that can bring about that. And for even attempting it, you put yourself in a less than favorable position. I can't stress enough that Sonic is just better when he can run or use Shorthop Aerials.

You airdodged a lot into the ground. Stop that!

... I'm all out of ideas. Too tired.

Much appreciated. That's the kind of advice I need. If there's anything else you're willing to throw in when you're awake I'll appreciate that too. I'm aware of the air dodge into the ground habit. I'm trying to correct it. I believe it was ok in Brawl so that's probably where I got the habit from. I wasn't aware that I rolled onto the stage from ledge literally every time! Thanks for pointing that out. It is true that I prefer that option against Rosalina though...I feel like all other options get stuffed. But I'll experiment some to see what I can do in the future to mix it up some. Thanks for all the advice. I'll be working on all the stuff you pointed out asap. I've also got one more tournament match that just got uploaded from a different location I was at. So I'll post the link to that too now.

UDLR Customs: Smash Champions Qualifier #4

vs MG :4rob: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=452313664922507&pnref=story

Now I am qualified for the top 16 tournament coming up on the 8th which I'm sure there will be recordings of so I'll have that up soon too. I only barely qualified though and the gap between me and people in the top 8 does feel pretty huge. So I've been trying to crunch as much smash practice/knowledge I can to improve by then. I've got several fairly large cash prize tourneys coming up in my state as well. So if I can't do well in the Top 16 tournament I want to at least Be ready for the 21st, 22nd, and 28th tournaments I'll be trying to attend.

Ninjalink is starting to get around to post past Nebulous matches on YouTube. He's been really busy but they should all be up soon enough. For now, he's uploaded the direct stream so I'll link with timecode. I'll update this post later once he separates them.

vs. Saint :4shulk: http://youtu.be/kyuJcNiIk_0?t=47m51s
  • Click if you want to see me body a Shulk. My guess is he had little Sonic experience, in comparison to my Shulk experience. I play Numbers and Trent a lot.
vs. Numbers :4shulk: http://youtu.be/kyuJcNiIk_0?t=1h13m30s
  • Speaking of Numbers… Great Shulk player. I get so close every time, but I threw away round 3 in this set. Oh well. I'd say maybe next time but he uses Lucario now so gg me time to learn that match-up...
vs. Dark.Pch :4peach: http://youtu.be/kyuJcNiIk_0?t=1h45m55s
  • Dark and I always have really clutch sets. I managed to take both rounds this time though by the skin of my teeth. Really fun and hype as always.

Also, this is up now x_x

vs. J.Miller :4luigi: http://youtu.be/jzyWMtfuEXI?t=36m5s
  • We all know how this one goes… I rewatched it and I started the set with a clean stock but couldn't even manage to finish it off. It's clear J.Miller was staying in shield too much instead of asserting his hitboxes… And when he does he completely adapts and shuts me out. I need to learn the frames and **** on Luigi. I just felt I was getting hit by everything and didn't know what to do about it. Somehow need to find people help me learn this match-up.

Camalange you should definitely try watching my matches vs DJ Delta that i posted before. If just for how you can possibly attempt to get around some of luigi's pressure tools and scare them off stage. VS luigi we win the MU if we can throw luigi off stage or keep him pinned towards the ledge.

I have some video that i forgot to post from a while back which i'll update this post as they get uploaded.

I have about 7 matches or so coming soon once the T.O decides to upload them. Played in a top 16 invitational and had some really good players there. I only managed to place 9th. But hopefully when you guys see some of the players I lost against I can level up my gameplay some more! Looking at you, Kinzer. Seeing as you're the first and only person to give me a lot of feedback so far.

Need some critique, specially on Sheik. I feel like I should've used more Ftilts and Bairs. Also, my spacing was just poor in those matches, I think, which is what I plan on correcting by implementing more SDSC and reverse SDSC, alongside with BSBS+SHSDJ.

Also, some people were surprised (in a good way) by how many cancels I was doing during the matches. Maybe I'm overdoing it?

Oh, and great ending on the GF match. A must watch. :sonic:

Still have one more match vs Diddy. I'll try to upload it later today.

Your own critique was quite on the money, I only watched GFs but I wanted to see more ftilts. You can't be too hard on your spacing though, its impossible to know where to put yourself against Sheik sometimes. When under pressure, I'd like to see whether VSDJ is viable as a GTFO move. It works well against Weegee, seems to beat a lot out.
