Welcome to the Collection Room, the video archive and critique thread for Smash4 Sonic!

Videos will be organised by character in alphabetical order. Hopefully I've made things easier by putting them in table format so you can filter through by players, opponents and customs too if need be. Videos will be archived as long as you provide the basic info such as the names, characters used, whether it's Tourney / For Glory and the time of the match. Anybody can pitch in and critique others videos so don't be shy, let's help each other out!

Patch notes regarding Sonic are also on the bottom of this post.

Well I have had the same bad habits as well with recording. I am beating myself up over it right now because I teamed with Katakiri, forgive me for spelling your name wrong if you see this. We placed second and lost to Kel and Overswarm, my fault for that. But we destroyed every other team and went double Sonic towards the end.

I will remember to get a bunch next tournament.

A Sonic 2ndary user in need of help, and would like some critique of my skill. Have 82 wins in For Glory and 32 losses so far, but in other modes I find it a little harder to win with him and I haven't played him very often recently, and I wanna prepare with him for the next tournament I attend. Even though he is my 2ndary and I consider him the caracter I am best with, I don't spend as much time practicing or researching with him as I do with my other 3 characters since I felt I needed to improve with them more than I do with him, and these beatings I take from good players essentially knock some sense into me and tell me otherwise,. I also think these losses are essentially dire consequences for not practicing with him lately and I think I oughta come back to the sonic boards more often now.

I mostly feel like I'm losing due to a lack of mixups and a linear playstyle (mostly overuse of spin charge, Smashes, and dash grabs) and I telegraph myself to my opponents since they catch onto my bad habits. I kinda feel tunnel-visioned from watching these games I had, as I felt there are things I could have done in those matches instead, but didn't because I'm unaware of it and tend to choose the wrong attack or action. But I could actually be losing to something more than that, or even losing to 10 different things. Any help/feedback would earn my gratitude. And there's plenty more where all this came from, but this is all I can upload for now.

I watched the fight against ROB and Yoshi. And Mario too the other day I think.

The thing you're absolutely right about is that you're telegraphing what you do for nearly every approach. The approaches themselves were too direct, I didn't notice any baiting, any shield cancelled SD's for example, and it was kinda reckless. Especially with the dash attacks, they were punished more often than not, when they should be used primarily for punishing themselves. If you're forcing a player to react without commiting yourself, you're going to read their habits as yours are being read currently, and with practise you'll know how to punish certain moves, and certain defensive styles. Throw out empty short hops, see if they airdodge or throw out an aerial, if it's the former punish it next time with an aerial like nair with a lingering hitbox. etcetra etcetra.

I don't know if I'm on to anything here, but I think you need to relax a bit more. As you said yourself you threw out smashes a lot, and you seemed to want to approach every time to rack up damage. Add that to the fact the games I saw were over rather quickly says to me you were
going for the kill as soon as possible. Playing more cautious, and mixing up your approaches when you do approach directly (which is character dependant, ROB for example can't do much if you're approaching from the air at an angle) should help.

On a side note, you kept SH FFing your fair and whiffed it every time, and got punished every time. That's no good. I use fair only either offstage, or rising into an opponent. I think discussions on when and where to use moves, and when they're safe and where they're not, would be healthy on this board, for people new to Sonic especially. I know we did it in brawl but this is a whole other kettle of steak.

I don't know if anything I wrote made sense. I kept getting distracted and walking off and cooking and ****. Prolly not.

The words in blue, what's a Shield-canceled SD (and what does the SD stand for)? I keep hearing about and that it's important, but I have no idea what it is or how to perform it. Everything else I understand pretty perfectly and ur right, I telegraph my approaches way too much and I'm usually in a rush for my opponents to die already, the hundreds of times I get shielded while using DownB kinda told me that already and I get into trouble for it. I need to find more fake-outs, play more cautiously, and take my time with killing people; thanks for confirming that for me.

And I thought the sH FF Fairs would work to help remedy it (mainly because I don't know if the other aerials would work for approaches, and I thought this one did) but I guess I should stop that now that you mention it and I reviewed my videos. I'll get some more videos another time and see if I've improved by then.

He's referring to shield canceling your side b. at any point before it's fully charged, you can cancel the spin into a shield simply by hitting your shield button. You can start side b from any movement (standstill, run, pivot etc.), so it becomes a valuable mixup to keep your opponent confused. You can also jump out of the move by simply doing a normal attack out of it. You can also jump around while still charging it by hitting the jump button while holding down the b button.

I tried using SideB and jumping, then shielding as soon as I hit the ground. It seems to work, but I think I'll need more ways than that if I ever wanna stop telegraphing my approaches.

Some sets I had with DarkM of The Odo Faction. DarkM calls me Babael because that's my Twitch name Babael_Of_Fate. Any criticism is appreciated constructive or not. One thing I did notice after watching our matches is that I have a bad habit of rolling or moving backwards after I re-spawn from a KO. I don't know if I was giving DarkM too much respect or what but I now have a mental note of that as well as a few other bad habits like no auto-canceling after Spring unless you jump.

Sonic Orochi gave me his input but it wouldn't hurt to get more from other Sonic mains.

About 1 or 2 times in the video, you attempted to hit him with Bair while you were so close to the ground, and got punished for them both times. Unless you autocancel it, I wouldn't do that if I were you, given how horrible the landing lag is on his Bair now. I'm not sure which aerial is best for when landing near the ground, but if I had to pick one I'd probably go for a Nair instead. And at 1:22, you don't wanna air dodge into the ground either since they have increased landing lag too.

I have a bad habit of using them myself, and I'd try to be a bit more careful with those if I were you, should primarily be used for punishing or to catch people who are landing back on the ground.
I'd personally say it would be a little easier to criticize if you had the camera on both screens so I could see how much damage you and your opponent were at.
I don't recall you ever using Utilt, Btrhow, or Fthrow in this match at all. Again, I can't see your damage but you might have been able to kill him faster if you used Fthrow or Bthrow since they now have kill power compared to most other throws in the game, and Utilt works as a good anti air even without a disjointed hitbox anymore. In my experience, I've also beat out a few homing attacks in sonic dittos with the utilt, and I can combo into 2 Fairs from it.
When doing shield-canceled spins, maybe you could do a spindash jump before shielding so you could jump forward and get closer to him. I do it all the time and it seems to catch some people off guard that don't know Sonic, you can also cancel your roll into a grab if they attempt to shield it.
Lastly, you threw out quite bit of whiffed smash attacks while the other guy was spinning.

I have a bad habit of using them myself, and I'd try to be a bit more careful with those if I were you, should primarily be used for punishing or to catch people who are landing back on the ground.

I'd personally say it would be a little easier to criticize if you had the camera on both screens so I could see how much damage you and your opponent were at.

I don't recall you ever using Utilt, Btrhow, or Fthrow in this match at all. Again, I can't see your damage but you might have been able to kill him faster if you used Fthrow or Bthrow since they now have kill power compared to most other throws in the game, and Utilt works as a good anti air even without a disjointed hitbox anymore. In my experience, I've also beat out a few homing attacks in sonic dittos with the utilt, and I can combo into 2 Fairs from it.

When doing shield-canceled spins, maybe you could do a spindash jump before shielding so you could jump forward and get closer to him. I do it all the time and it seems to catch some people off guard that don't know Sonic, you can also cancel your roll into a grab if they attempt to shield it.

Lastly, you threw out quite bit of whiffed smash attacks while the other guy was spinning.

1. I do use b-air a lot. I love it and I'm trying to work it into my game. I guess doing it low is just to risky. I'll work on breaking that habit. Was soooo good in brawl. I gotta work out the risk vs reward.

5. After the nerf from brawl I'm not sure how to use an u-tilt (exposed). I am actually working on using back throw less. I guess I did well. I uses it way to much for a while. I don't use f-throw often. I will hit training and look at some percentages to kill.

6. I don't know about this suggestion. That's to risky. I think if I saw a sonic vsdj2 at me I would probably f-air them or worse..... You are so vulnerable doing that. I think if you attack cancel (is that how you say pressing the normal button while still in charge?!?) it your fine.

7. Ya I was trying to catch the spin charge with a f-smash and send him flying. I missed a couple times then figured out it only trades. Chalk it up to trying something out.

I watched several of your vids and I'm gonna choose the dedede one. I would have played this match way differently.

1 Vary up your approach more. Running up and grabbing is only gonna get you so far. Sonics grabs are good but that's abuse. People catch on.

2 You don't always need to get up in players faces. Proper a spacing will get you far. You missed this bad in the dedede match.

3 Your actions are very stiff. Your either at full force or dead stop. There is some middle ground. Be like water.

4 Pressure with a spin charge or spindash. You don't even have to use it (see 5)

5. Fake people out. Pretty simple. Pressure opponents to make moves. Then react.

4. Kataridragons big character combo:
Spindash/spincharge > roll, jump cancel, uair, jump, uair, up b, uair.

I think that sums up the match.

I'll add the latest videos I missed now, but I was thinking about blowing up this entire thing to start fresh with the Wii U version. Thoughts/opinions? I just don't see much point in keeping the 3DS stuff around, now that people will actually be able to record matches properly and will be playing with proper controls.

I don't think you should do it. 3DS still has different stages at least, which could lead to a slightly different metagame and tier list. Plus not everyone will be able to get the Wii U version, and might still be stuck with 3DS, like. Myself. I hope I can get it this week, but probably not sadly
