Question: how do we replicate the Tales gameplay?

The arena combat of Tales makes me think of Tekken in some aspects. With Tekken, we have diagonal tilts and the unique "while rising" attack on top of the FGC inputs in Smash. But with Tales, it's different. Now I know Xenoblade also has 3D combat, but that's completely different from Tales. How do we approach this?

I say scrap that and focus on Velvet's strengths as basically a glass cannon who can deal massive damage and can temporary give herself super armour at the cost of constant damage with Therionize or have her be able to use Devouring Claw to get a different special move depending on the type of enemy she used Devouring Claw on

Tales combat is kinda like Smash in terms of inputs.
All attacks in Berseria are artes and they can be strung together into various combos.

Her Smash normals could be her combos whilst her specials are focused mostly on her Devouring Claw attacks which is kinda how Berseria worked anyway, it's just that the combos aren't mapped to 4 different buttons but instead use the control stick to inform which moves to use whilst Devour is it's own button.

Hmm. That makes sense to me. Makes you wonder how much work Devouring Claw would be put into in comparison to, say, Kirby's Copy Abilities, which are personalized for literally everyone on the roster.

The way I see it is like Android 21 in DBFZ, she'd get a new special move when landing a command grab that absorbs energy, but what the move is depends on the character type, in DBFZ this was grouped into Goku family, Vegeta family, Alien and Android iirc, so it'd be classified in Smash into categories like fire users, sword users, brawlers, etc

I'm a big fan of the Tales series and Velvet is my favorite protagonist. I just love her edgy aesthetic and character and she has a very unique fighting style with both her standard blade weapons and her monster arm. As others have mentioned, she would lean towards a combo focused glass cannon style character.

If Velvet did make it in, do you think they would just stick to Tales of Berseria's soundtrack or would they take music from the whole series? I'm really hoping that it is the later since Tales has had some great music throughout. I'm especially partial to Fighting of the Spirit. I first heard this in Tales of Symphonia but it actually originates from an earlier game:

What are some other songs you'd love to hear if Velvet or another Tales character eventually makes their way to Smash?

Yeah, you were close: in DBFZ it was Human, Saiyan, Alien and Android. Categorizing the Smash fighters like that could very well work for Velvet's Devouring Claw Special, but now here's the question: what kind of abilities could Velvet get from Devouring Claw in the original Berseria? Maybe that could get a better idea on her playstyle overall?

I would hope there'd be a variety! Namco doesn't have the licensing challenges that Square does, so hopefully it'd be easy enough to get a healthy variety... And here's some Tales tracks I like!

Okay, uh, Tales of VS probably doesn't deserve a song, but it's another platform fighter, so why not give it a shout-out! Has anyone here played it? I've considered importing it, but never have...

Schnee posted a compilation of every attack Velvet has in the bottom of the last page, 1:20 to 2:20 shows off all the attacks she gets from it, also, my bad, it's Consuming Claw, been a while since I looked at Berseria. In her game, they're explicitly combo finishers

I do remember hearing that in Berseria, the enemies are sorted into different categories as well. Would some of those categories fit Smash well, or would they be too different to apply very well?

Not all of them fit as we don't have any snake like characters beyond a character literally being called Snake and as Berseria has 11 categories, some would likely end up skipped

Taking me a bit to get used to not being the one responsible for day changeovers. Currently, my strategy is to just post the noms as I count 'em, so these noms are also for half of Velvet's day.
Sorry, I'm aware I basically declared the schedule for the next 7 days on my own; I just really wanted us to be back on schedule in the last week of speculation... Please count noms however it is easiest for you to count them!

Actually, going to ask for something odd. Is there a chance you could move Brian two days up so I'm guaranteed to be off that day? My new job is starting and I may be working on Friday as is suddenly. Today is my first core day of training.

Like, push him back behind Okabe and Alm? I mean, I see no reason not to push him back if you'll be free Sunday... I imagine you're the one with the most to say about Quest 64.

I actually don't work on Friday, oddly enough. Though who knows what might happen, so moving it to Sunday is still probably for the best. :)

Okay! Well, I'll plan on having that be the Sunday-Monday day then, just to be safe.

so what kind of stage would this velvet bring
It seems like world-travelling JRPGs are usually repped by the starting area or the final area, so... probably one of those!

Anyway, I have an inkling that someone is excited for us to move on, so let's get to Octoling's day!

MY VEEMO BABIES

I love them so heckin much UwU

I want to start with my idea for how they’ll play. For one they won’t be an Echo. They’ll use different weapons from the Inklings like Dualies, Brellas, Chargers, Splatlings etc

they may also have a more high-risk-high-reward style to reflect the difficulty of Octo Expansion. Maybe their attacks hit harder but either use more ink or leave them vulnerable?

Yeah I’m probably gonna be posting rapid fire cuz I’ve been waiting for this day lmao

my ideas for alts:
Agent 8 Female (deep magenta)
Agent 8 Male (Salmon)
Agent 8 Sanitized Female (Lime)
Agent 8 Sanitized Male (Soda color)
Mayo Female (pale yellow)
Ketchup Male (orange red)
Chaos Female (metallic gold, wearing Pearl’s OE crown)
Order Male (metallic silver, wearing Marina’s OE headphones)

the music list:
  • The character creation screen theme (only plays on their spirit board)
  • 8 - regret (remix)
  • Nasty Majesty
  • 5 - thirsty
  • 1 - progress
  • 6 - frisk
  • 2 - ripped
  • 9 - Party
  • Shark Bytes
  • 13 - shade
  • 16 - salty
  • 14 - crush
  • 12 - awake (remix)
  • 11 - above
  • TEST PASSED! (victory theme only, I’ll describe something about that later)
  • Splattack (Octo)
  • Tidal Rush (yes I know this isn’t from Octo Expansion but still)
  • Spicy Calamari Inkantation (see above)
  • Fly Octo Fly ~ Ebb & Flow (Octo). Plays the Ebb & Flow part when at the last minute in a timed match or when one player has one stock left (up to three players) or only two fighters remain (more than 3)

I’ve mentioned before but I think Octoling is a great choice for Smash and I’m very confident that they’ll make it in at some point seeing how successful Splatoon has been. I know you said you don’t envision them as Inkling echoes but do you think they would be completely unique or still loosely based on Inkling like Isabel is to Villager? I’ve never played Splatoon so I’m looking forward to some specifics on how they’d play and what new moves they could bring.

Noms:
x10 Goomba/Goombella

The only things I see them sharing are the up B + ink mechanic and maybe a few basic moves. Specials are totally different

final smash will be different too, should be a special that originated in Splatoon 2. Maybe Splashdown, Inkjet, Baller, Booyah Bomb, or if you wanna be adventurous, Stingray. I suck at Stingray in Splatoon 2 LUL

Spirit Board; it has exactly 8 spirits on the actual board itself. 8.5 technically since one evolves
  • Cap’n Cuttlefish (Octo Expansion)
  • Off the Hook (Octo Expansion)
  • Iso Padre
  • C.Q. Cumber
  • Sanitized Enemy Octoling
  • Salmonids
  • Mysterious Telephone evolves into Commander Tartar
  • NILS Statue

The victory screen thing I mentioned:

ok so as I was mentioning they have a unique thing with their victory screens like with Joker (P5 victory screen reference), Sephiroth (references the one scene in FFVII) and Kazuya (no fanfare but the Tekken 7 announcer says “Kazuya Mishima wins!”)

when Octoling wins, instead of the announcer saying “Game!” Or “Victory!” It’s replaced with the TEST PASSED! Filter from Octo Expansion when you clear a station, with the appropriate Booyah! Sound clip from the female or male Octoling. It’s randomized but sticks to the gender of the Octoling that wins. If it’s in a traditional match (I.e. not spirit board, classic mode or WoL), it continues so that TEST PASSED! The song plays and it cuts to the Octoling returning to the starting point of a station where they get their weapons and all, with the 80s TV filter, and they get a mem cake just like in OE, but the mem cakes are of Smash related things in the OE mem cake style. They include: all fighters (alts that change the core appearance like gender or a different outfit included, but exclude pallet variations), a Smash ball, Master Hand, Crazy Hand, Sandbag, Galeem and Dharkon.

the video then fades out to black and the “OCTOLING/X TEAM” name turns a chromatic purple to stand out against the black background.

Coming up next is the part I’m most excited to do… the trailer. 👀
Ps. SharkLord SharkLord might wanna change the title

oh rie how could suggest new things can do with out explaining them? that the idea of the thread. octolings are the octarian counterparts of the inklings and function identically to them hence why most think of them as echoes. however as weve learned echoes are more about body shape than any thing as we have echoes who while they play the same in the game as the character they echo but have ended up with a moveset based on games they werent in (daisy) and echoes who have many unique things they can do in their game completely ignored (dark samus) in short theres no way of predicting how it would go.

now for the sake of argument lets talk about the weapons the ocotling can use untouched by the inkling. the dualies are the signature new weapon of splatoon 2 with their unique feature of being able to dodge, something we already do in smash. the charger is your standard sniping affair favoured by campers (and other such evil beings) and very useless in salmon run, would probably work like the staff item. the splatling is a gatling gun that works similarly to the charger and is just as useless in salmon run. im not bitter. and my favourite of the bunch the splatbrella a gun like an umbrella that will hold up a shiled should you hold the button, hold it long enough the shield will fire. a weapon i thought would translate quite well into a smash item.

splatoon 3 is of course giving us new weapon types, such as that bow like gun and the crab tank (which might be a special) but until its out i cant say to much.

now sub weapons. the inkling only uses the most basic of these leaving the octoling to be able to use many others. the burst bomb is fairly standard and is for lighter faster attacks. there are the ink mines, self explanatory. there are curling bombs which run along the game and bounce off walls, not something thatd work to well in smash. seekers which are homing weapons that also run along the ground and the auto bomb which is a walking homing. theres the suction bomb which sticks to surfaces. the sprinkler which sprays ink and might work better as an item. the fizzy bomb which bounces before exploding. the toxic mist which leaves some miasma in the place it landed. the splash wall which is more of an obstacle than weapon and the torpedo the floating homer.

right special weapons aka potential final smashes. tetna missiles that lock onto enemies and fire a number of missiles directly at them, see snake's old FS. splashdown, leap into air strike the ground with a burst attack, pretty basic. baller, roll around in a ball running over people and ending with a large explosion, probably a bit slow for the faster pace of ultimate. stingray, and concentrated laser that goes through walls and easy to avoid, basically a narrower version of inklings FS. ink storm, send a cloud dropping ink over the stage, would require some artistic licence to work as a FS. the bubbler which is a forcefield, not much of a FS. bubble blower, throws a few bubbles which will explode when shot enough. booya bomb, an explosive thats gets stronger by pressing the booya button, would be easy to make in smash. the ultra stamp, see the hammer item. bomb launcher, speaks for itself. ink armor, increases defence would be much of a FS. inkjet, take to the air and launch a bazooka at people, see diddy's FS. leaving out the splatoon 1 stuff.

theres some new ones in splatoon 3. killer wail 5.1, 6 smaller sound lasers as opposed to the single large one the inkling has. trizooka, a bazooka that shoots three blasts at once. zipcaster, turns the user into a state between humanoid and cephalopod and can stretch their arms to latch onto walls, no idea how thatll work in smash.

Toxic Mist also slows down whomever’s caught in it iirc. Might be OP, unless you make it use a lot of Octoling’s ink like how it consumes crazy amounts of ink in Splatoon 2

I do like the idea of the Torpedo as the sub weapon the most

My concept for Octolings as Inkling Echoes. (Note that this was written before Splatoon 3 was announced.)
They would use the same attacks and weapon types as Inkling, but use different specific weapons that would affect how they play.
  • Inkbrush -> Octobrush. Slower, but longer reach.
  • Slosher -> Explosher. Slower, but more powerful.
  • Blaster -> Grim Range Blaster. Slower, but longer reach. (Grim was specifically chosen due to how similar the appearances of the default and Range Blasters are.) (Addendum: since Splatoon 3 redesigned the Range Blaster, that version could be used rather than Grim.)
  • Splattershot -> Octo Shot. Functionally identical.
  • Splat Roller -> Dynamo Roller. Slower, and doesn't bury opponents, but does more damage and gives super armor during it (though only temporarily).
  • Splat Bomb -> Suction Bomb. Does more damage, but doesn't roll and lingers for longer before exploding.
Their new Final Smash would be Booyah Bomb. Octoling hovers in the air while holding a large ball of ink. A reticle appears on screen (a la Giga Bowser Punch or Lightning Chariot), and when B is hit again or time runs out, the Octoling throws the bomb to that spot, where it explodes in a large, swirling burst.

I'll be honest: I really love Splatoon as an IP and loved Splatoon 2, but it took me a very long time to go back to it for the Octo Expansion... That said, there's no question to me that Splatoon has room for more content in the game, with the current Inkling kit being basically just Splatoon 1 content (heck, we don't even have the short-haired Inklings as alts).

All the concepts and moveset stuff you've outlined thus far sound great! I especially like the meta idea of Smash just being another test mission during the Octo Expansion; I tend to like in-universe justifications for Smash stuff...

I'll bring back an idea that was popular in the base game speculation cycle: Is it time to let the Squid Sisters or Off the Hook have their own version of Palutena's Guidance or Snake's Codex?

Ah yes, Splatoon. Didn't really get into Octo Expansion and I've never tried the online, but my brother's really into it. Anyways, in lieu of any Splatoon info, I'll be compiling a short list of cool octopi facts sometime later today (If I can remember to do it)
Ps. SharkLord SharkLord might wanna change the title
Oop, sorry about that. Classes start around 8 (Oddly fitting today, actually) and go until somewhere between 1:30 and 3, so nowadays I won't be able to update the titles until midway through the day.

alright

time for the trailer

this one is LONG. I'm going all out with this, and yes I am doing a "final battle" (vs Galeem and Dharkon) theme

The trailer starts with the cross slash, and then...

Inkopolis Square, just like when you start Splatoon 2. the camera zooms in on the big TV on top of the tower as this song plays:

Pearl: Y'all know what time it is!

Marina: It's Off the Hook, coming at you LIVE from Inkopolis Square!

Pearl: Hey, Marina, did you hear?

Marina: Hear what?

Pearl: The Super Smash Bros. tournament is ending soon! They're gonna bring in their last newcomer today!

Marina: It's hard to believe it's finally coming to an end... just like when we did our last Splatfest...

Pearl: Say, remember when we had a Smash Bros. themed Splatfest?

Marina: Heroes vs Villains! And I'll remind you that Villains won!

Pearl: Doesn't look like it on the Smash side of things...

(The screen behind them shows the new DLC heroes and villains on either Pearl or Marina's side. Heroes on Pearl's side, Villains on Marina's side. Pearl's side lists Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry, Byleth, Min Min, Steve & Alex, and Pyra/Mythra. Marina's side has Piranha Plant, Zombie & Enderman, Sephiroth, and Kazuya.)

Pearl: In the end, Heroes win, baby! BOOYAH!

Marina: No need to gloat, Pearlie...

(the image on the TV behind them changes to static)

Pearl: Ayo, what's going on?

Marina: Hold on, it's coming in...

(This song plays as an image of the Smashers looking at Galeem and Dharkon fighting in the sky appears)

Marina: Looks like Smash is in trouble!

Pearl: Holy carp, Marina, WHAT DO WE DO!?

Marina: The only thing we can do...

(Marina pulls out something from behind her. They're two Smash Invites)

Pearl: Are those... THE LAST SMASH INVITES?! And they're for two?!

Pearl: Does this mean...?!

Marina: As much as we'd like to join Smash, we have a career to keep up here. We can help, but...

Marina: It should go to someone who deserves it more. And I know just who....

Pearl: And that’s all the time we’ve got!

Pearl: Until next time…

Pearl & Marina: Don’t get cooked! Stay off the hook!

(The scene changes to the Final Battle area of World of Light as this song plays. We see CGI of various Smashers fending off Galeem and Dharkon-created clones of themselves, like Min Min fending off her Galeem clone and Kazuya attacking his Dharkon clone. It then cuts to Off the Hook's helicopter in the distance. The camera changes POV as if it were the newcomers'.)

Marina: Sorry to get you two on such short notice... just help the others until Pearl's ready to do her thing! I’ll provide some backup with my Hyperbombs!

Pearl: I gotta do this AGAIN? Oh well... go save the world again, Agent 8! Both of you!

(The camera changes to show female and male Agent 8 holding the Smash invites before going into Octopus form and jumping to the others as this plays. As they're about to land, around 0:11 in the song, they go back to their humanoid forms and you see this title card: )

Octoling Paints the Town Pink?!

(the text fade in effect also resembles the mission descriptions at the start of each OE level, including the final level)

(Gameplay consists of the Octolings using their various weapons against Galeem and Dharkon-created clones of the fighters, including DLC. Some such shots include a Dharkon clone of Cloud and a Galeem clone of Sephiroth at the Northern Cave; a Galeem clone of Pyra and a Dharkon clone of Terry at KoF Stadium, and a not clone, but Galeem possessed (aura only) Yellow and Green Inkling on Octoling's stage, MC. Princess Diaries. this is a throwback to Hijacked Agent 3. After a CGI shot of both Octolings detonating a series of Hyperbombs that demolish most of the clones, MC. Princess Diaries' stage gimmick is also shown: after two minutes pass, Pearl descends from the sky and whomever approaches her gets her to use her Princess Cannon. it has a larger radius than Inkling's Killer Wail final smash. also, Octoling's final smash, Booyah Bomb, is shown off at some point prior.)

Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion

cut back to CGI. Galeem and Dharkon begin charging massive blasts of energy as this plays. The Octolings run back to the other Smashers, making uneasy noises when the song cuts to 0:23 and Pearl leaps from the sky in front of the Smashers.

Pearl: Y'all did great. I'll take it from here!

Pearl: Vocal chords ready!

Pearl: AYO, LIGHT AND DARK THINGIES!

(Pearl's hair glows pink AND she has the Final Smash Aura. She's an Inkling, so I guess Smash-verse is just treating her as an Inkling with the Princess Cannon as her Final Smash. She whips out the Princess Cannon, Galeem and Dharkon fire, and then...)

Pearl: BOO-YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

(the next scene folds out exactly like this, with the fluctuating bars and finishing much the same way, only difference is the the "Good Guys" bar has a rainbow wave left-to-right effect, and "Bad Guys" has right-to-left waves of yellow and purple.)

(As Galeem and Dharkon die and fall into the ocean, this plays. You see the balls of yellow and purple light before they burst into the Spirit-spout reaching into the sky. All the Spirits are finally going home. This is World of Light's true ending.)

(Finally, one last CGI to send Smash Ultimate off. It emulates the credits sequence of Octo Expansion, but with all the smashers (incl. different gendered/different character alts like the Heroes if any) standing on the cliffs watching the Spirit spout, and Pearl and Marina performing Into The Light on the little portable stage carried by their helicopter. A holographic screen appears a few seconds in, showing the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate title, and key segments of each trailer in reverse order:

Octoling -> Kazuya -> Pyra/Mythra -> Sephiroth -> Steve/Alex/Zombie/Enderman -> Min Min -> Byleth -> Terry -> Banjo & Kazooie -> Hero -> Joker -> Piranha Plant -> Ken & Incineroar -> Isabelle -> King K. Rool -> Dark Samus -> Chrom -> Simon & Richter -> Ridley -> Daisy (as part of Everyone Is Here) -> Inkling

then Smash 4's trailers in reverse order:

Bayonetta -> Corrin -> Cloud -> Ryu -> Roy -> Lucas -> Mewtwo -> Duck Hunt -> Bowser Jr. -> Shulk -> Lucina & Robin -> PAC-MAN -> Mii -> Palutena (and Dark Pit) -> Greninja -> Little Mac -> Rosalina & Luma -> Wii Fit Trainer -> Mega Man -> Villager

then at the synthwave part of the song, the Brawl reveals (idk the order but reverse em). At 2:52 in the song, as Marina sings again, you see the segments of the Melee intro with Melee's newcomers, then 64's intro with all its newcomers. At this point, the sky changes to the morning light as it was previously night. The last thing on the holographic screen is one final marquee of the completed Smash Ultimate banner before the holographic screen fades away as the song ends, everyone looks back at the viewer, and the camera slowly pans up to the sky where the Spirit-spout ends.)

Thanks for playing!

I'll bring back an idea that was popular in the base game speculation cycle: Is it time to let the Squid Sisters or Off the Hook have their own version of Palutena's Guidance or Snake's Codex?
we have Squid Sisters as AT and Miis, so why not give Off the Hook some love and have them do Inkopolis News-inspired sketches of their intel?

alright

time for the trailer

this one is LONG.

Wow, that’s really cool. It’s great to see someone so passionate about something. It looks like you’ve put a ton of thought into this. I hope your dream comes true 😊.

One thing of note is costumes. They already look quite similar to Inklings, so having some very unique designs/clothing should help a bit with that. They could even be somewhat similar in concept to the Inkling costumes. I haven't seen the usual attire they have in Splatoon itself, though, as options. I only know of their basic deisgn.

It’s probably my favorite trailer concept I’ve ever written, and I love Splatoon and put in so many references

especially that little fourth wall break in the final retrospective cinematic uwu

dude if it somehow ends up exactly like this or at least 75% similar my mind will be blown

after all some dude accurately predicted Ridley’s tag line no cap
