I my self never used lucas, but the only reason he would be cut is time constraints. And we dont know if Ness is coming back either, but we cant be sure. Plus, if they have Lucas return, it will be a Ness copy with one or two diferent moves, and a diferent design. I beileve in a 55 character limit, so if we get all brawl veterans return, There wont be many more newcomers. Lucas , Snake, Ivysaur and Squirtle are my most likely cuts as there not iconic and Snake is third party.

I feel the leak, just isnt right. Theres something wrong about it
50 characters, 4 rows, Mewtwo and Ridley Added? Sakurai knows that Ridley is about 5 times the size of everyone else according to his boss fight in ssbb. I still deny it. I mean, I myself would love Game and Watch and Ice Climbers to return, and Mewtwo I would love to come back, but all the characters the leak saud were huge fan requests, Megaman, Pacman, Miis etc.

Bringing a villain is a good way to "balance" the characters representing a series. You have the main protagonist, the side-kick(barring DKC:2 and a couple of spin-offs), and the antagonist. I also think King K. Rool has more to offer than Dixie Kong. We still haven't seen a heavy-weight newcomer, nor a villain a series.

I'm pretty sure the Kremlings would have just as much detail in their animations if they were introduced in 2014, I mean the original DKC series was limited. Also, if you count it, the Kremlings were featured in a horrible TV show, which shows more personality. For a SNES, the animation was fantastic and received much praise for it's graphics. Tropical Freeze was indeed a great game, but it's not really my favorite. I'm not biased either, I played the original DKC series as I played TF.

I personally don't think it's too fair that a series with so much success and games is receiving less content then a series with 3 games with moderate success, well at least as of now. So, a third DK rep is very needed, to me. The DK Arcade did receive love, it received a stage which the original DKC did not. And I'll have to say, I think DK Jr. would probably start an internet riot. Especially those who supported K. Rool or Dixie. I'd riot with them honestly.
I agree completely. K. Rool would be a much better DK rep then Dixie. Plus, as I said in an earlier post, he has not even gotten a cameo, while every othwr origional ssb series has had their antagonist appear somewhere whether an assist or a playable. (Not counting Yoshi, as I consider him a Mario character) He should at least make a boss appeance. Edit: K. Rool was a trophy

Even within the leak, there's still room for debate, but how much longer will fans deny its reliability before it becomes obvious that it's the genuine article? Until every last character on it is confirmed? By then, you've set yourself up for a big emotional letdown.
I myself new Pacman and Miis were huge possibilities but some of them just dont really have chances. I mean, if any new character is confirmed, Bowser jr., Meowth, and K. Rool have better chances than most of them just sayin

Meowth was actually more popular than Jigglypuff during his peak, but got turned into a Pokeball. I think he's still one in this game. (Not sure.)

Yeah he's confirmed as a pokeball pokemon.

In regards to the whole Retro thing. What if they planned to go back and revive the Ice Climbers by giving them a new game, hence no "actual new Retro Rep" if you don't count Little Mac, Mega man and Pac-Man..... and assuming we won't get a new "retro" character this time around and if they even want another character to revive anyway?

Just wondering.... :/

This roster just makes me miss a certain someone...:roypm:

Looks good though...any reasoning behind Muddy? I don't see him brought up very often these days.
As of right now, we still haven't gotten a new character from a forgotten Nintendo franchise.

Considering that with this iteration of the Smash franchise being on a handheld system, I figured a character originating from a handheld would be pretty ideal. Muddy's potential for ground control utilizing his digging abilities and iron balls proved to be promising in my eyes for his unique playstyle / moveset.

He can be replaced with any other forgotten Nintendo franchise character, but he's my pick for those two reasons. I also have a personal fondness for the little guy, but that's besides the point.

It may not be set in stone, but considering how well this one holds up, it should probably be taken as basically fact at this point.
Seems quite naive if you asked me. Only less than two months left, and a monkey wrench could just show up out of nowhere.

Muddy Mole as a character would be so fantastic. One of the best Gameboy games, for sure.
Everyone do yourself a favor and get the game.

Did it even get any content in Brawl?

I wanna say for all those that think Ridley for SSB4, consider the facts. Ridley was about 5 times the size of the characters according to Brawl, also according to Brawl, he has a toooooooon of health and strength. He can fly indefinitely, inlike Pit or Kirby. Certain stages clearly show holes too big for Ridley. But overall, If metroid even got a new rep, it would not be Ridley. This is my opinion, so dont start screaming at me.

Like I've brought up numerous times, size is an irrelevant excuse. Bowser has been quite big himself, and yet he's a playable.

The main issue with Ridley has more to do with his wings, if anything.

I always thought it was his really unbalanced and weird proportions, which could be difficult to scale down without animating awkwardly. There's the issue of hurtboxes and such, as well.

I figure he'd be a really hard character to balance.

Lucas is a main protagonist himself though, and Mother 3 is a mainstream game as well. Sure, the franchise may be dead, but keeping Lucas around would at least maintain some dignity for it.
Mother 3 is far from a mainstream game, it's probably the most underground game with representation in Smash and also the worst selling of the Mother trilogy. Furthermore it was also the Mother game with the worst reception in Japan, with people over there still scolding it, it gets praises over here but in Japan it's basically treated as Mother's Other M.

Lucas is likely being cut for reasons not only related to being a clone, but also because almost nobody has any relation to him. He's such an easy cut compared to any other character on the Brawl roster imo. I've played all three games in the series and I'm a big fan of the franchise, but Ness is really all we need to represent that trilogy.

Mother 3 and the whole Mother series is as niche as it gets. It is far from being mainstream.

Just a little over 24 hours until the new character reveal. Any final thoughts as to who it could be? Just like most, I'm betting on Shulk, but who really knows? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'm also betting on Shulk, hoping and wishing for Ridley, but in the end, I'm just happy we're getting someone new again, whoever it may be.

To go back on the Lucas thing:
It's not like he and his game is even well received in his own country, with the handful of people who bought it. The Japanese have had a mostly mixed reaction with Mother 3, and I don't blame them. M2 is clearly held in much higher regard. That is why to this day we are getting yet another run of figurines and they are exclusively M2 characters, a game a decade older.

I can't think of a single franchise represented in Smash Bros more important to me than Mother, and I don't want Lucas back at all. He felt like a patched Ness. What a filthy insult to give us Lucas, a character who is more or less the same archetype as Ness, who was preceded by Ninten. Why not Loid/Jeff/Duster, or Ana/Paula/Kumatora? They are main characters who are of the tool-user and PSI specialist archetypes, serve similar theatrical roles. Granted the M3 characters by design were designed to shake up the formula, but still.

Of course Ness and Lucas can be made more different, but why? It would be like having Marth and Eliwood as the Fire Emblem representatives, and making Eliwood into the powerhouse instead of having Ike. Granted, Lucas is the "mainest" of characters, but In M3 out of all the games is when you spend the least time with him compared to Ninten and Ness. Let someone else represent a new play style that can do so more organically.

For what it's worth, I liked Lucas, even if I didn't appreciate his game too much. He's a sweet kid, just among the bottom of the barrel of Mother characters I would want for the purposes of Smash Bros. It bothers me that a lot of the people who defend him haven't even played at least two, sometimes not even one, of the Mother games. A lot of people just want him in Smash Bros again because he was there once, like with Roy supporters.

This if the first time I ever heard about Mother 3's mixed reception in Japan. I never read any impressions there, so I'm a bit surprised since import impressions are so favorable. I haven't tried the game yet, still need to finish Earthbound which we only got for the first time last year, so I wouldn't know myself.

Why is it so mixed there?

Well that's to be expected when the game of origin is far less famous than Smash Bros.

To save myself the time, Mato covered it well in two articles:
http://earthboundcentral.com/2012/10/mother-and-japanese-fans/
http://earthboundcentral.com/2013/04/mother-3-and-japanese-fans-revisited/

It's just the general impression people have of the game. For some reason the foreign fan-base liked it a lot more.

Unlike its predecessors Mother 3 is played through in chapters, much like Fire Emblem, which makes it much more linear than its open-world counterparts. Furthermore there's a much bigger emphasis on storytelling in the game, and not everyone can get invested in the story for various reasons I won't spoil here. For the most part Lucas and Kumatora are your only useful characters too, Duster is decent for some time but is reduced to a stat reducer mid-game, and Boney is there only to utilize items because he sucks badly. The battle system is also changed to incorporate a rhythm mechanic, which in all honesty doesn't work very well and it's incredibly hard to figure out said rhythm.

Personally I'm not a big fan of it in comparison to Earthbound, but I certainly don't hate it either like the Japanese guys do, it's just okay.

EDIT: @ N3ON N3ON Is it better like this ?
Posting any material that is liable to derail the thread, such as... posts consisting solely or comprised primarily of a gif/meme/video/off-topic image/etc.. are strictly prohibited and will result in penalization.
Not really tbh. Not posting any off-topic images at all is your best bet.

Also for everyone, this is the preferable thread to be posting "Dawn of the x Day: x Hours Remain" pics for the future. Or the Social thread.

Was Jeff shown off as an Assist Trophy yet?

It probably means nothing, but we got a Samurai Goroh Assist Trophy without Captain Falcon...

I would think that Lucas would be in a ton of danger of getting cut, and then I remember Toon Link.

And as unlikely as it is, there's only one, maybe two people that I can see as newcomers.

Franklin Badge and Mr.Saturn are confirmed to be back.

Wario, F-Zero, Mother and Ice Climbers are the only unconfirmed veteran series with confirmed content in-game. Rhythm Heaven, too.

Toon Link has merits of being a child Link though, which precedes adult Link.

I'd have taken the Link from the classic Zelda, but the WW timeline is pretty much its own thing at this point.

Just to throw out there:
Not sure how much credit it is to hail Lucas's return when a tiny minority of people who like him actually bought the game. If you browse these boards, I doubt you can read the text of the original game, so unless you have a translation guide to read while you play along, that sort of narrows it down I'd say. Further cemented by the fact Lucas is of course just that, from a game not released internationally. He failed to appease to new fans and loyalist fans alike and I don't blame Nintendo of America for not wanting to localize it.

To his credit, that's not as bad as Roy. It's crazy to think Intelligent Systems would replace Leif with Roy in Melee, though from a marketing standpoint I suppose it made the most sense. Thracia 776 didn't exactly sail smoothly, itself.

If Mother ever gets a newcomer again I want it to be Pokey in his Earthbound mech, but that's too good to ever happen.

In my defense, I have a lot of friends that adore Mother 3 who always tell me about the game and they expressed a big disinterest about cutting Lucas. In a sense, I'm only familiar with the character because of them.

I'd be sad if he's gone if only for them. Though if there's really no merit in having him, then...

Part of the fun of crossover games is discovering and falling in love with characters that you wouldn't expect to see in crossovers. In fact, I'm pretty sure this isn't a feature exclusive to Smash Bros.

I'd like to see if they can get a single Mother series character designed right before they even think of having two. :/

Ness stopped working during the span of SSB64 alone.
