Not very plausible, but slightly possible..

Big Boss reveal tomorrow.
He would technically be a "new comer" because that specific Snake hasn't been in the game. Essentially, it would be like Toon Link swapping out Young Link.

Big Boss is more so relevant to Metal Gear and Nintendo right now:
Last MG game on a Nintendo System was MGS3DS.
MGSV has Big Boss or "Venom Snake" as its protagonist.

Keifer said he did voice work for Mortal Kombat. Thjs has yet to be announced for Mortal Kombat. Would think they would use that big name in the announcement of MKX, and MK has never had a big name attached to it. Even yesterday at Evo they announced Raiden and said nothing about Keifer.

Wishful thinking, but perhaps Keifer got the names confused and he just knew he was voiced a fighting game or couldn't confirm what game he was in so threw out MK.

Gematsu never said anything about the veterans (save for Ness/Lucas), so whose to say that we woudlnt have Wolf or someone else cut instead of Snake?

Just random speculation. Do think its very likely that Shulk will be announced tomorrow.
It's fun for me to come up with reasons Snake could be back, but I am aware it is unlikely at this point.

So dumb question: What's going against K. Rool that people are clamoring for him to be mere DLC?

Okay, there's Dixie, but slot-stealing is a BS argument.
I don't think there's any particular thing going against K. Rool at the moment. I think it's more of a safety precaution in the even K. Rool doesn't make it onto the initial roster.

It's mostly in the scenario that Gematsu is all we're getting, which is a very real possibility. K. Rool and Dixie are likely the only highly requested newcomers that'd be open to DLC then, as everyone else are reduced to ATs or a stage boss.

I'm still absolutely shocked there doesn't seem to be a DK newcomer planned for the initial roster.

Along with Mewtwo and Little Mac I thought getting either Dixie or K. Rool (or SOME DK newcomer) was about the safest bet you could make...

Really? People genuinely think that Gematsu is the finalized roster, no exceptions?

I'm neutral on the Chorus Kid/Chrom thing, but one would have to be real pessimistic to think that's all we're getting.

Just goes to show that there are no guarantees with this sort of thing.

Personally I'm just putting it in relation to my past experience. Nothing that's been said has convinced me the current situation is any different from when the final roster was leaked and figured out for Brawl, it's the exact same with people clamoring to other "leaks" that list fan-favorites like Ridley and Mewtwo in addition to the already leaked guys, or coming up with excuses like "He never leaked Rosalina!" believing them to be infallible. Judging from Chronobound's stories it's exactly the same that also happened when Melee's roster was leaked, history is bound to repeat itself.

I'd rather expect the worse and hope for the best in this scenario, I've already made the mistake of being an optimist in regards to a leaked roster once, it'd be stupid falling into the same trap twice. 12 newcomers is more than I expected going into this anyways, and it's a very solid number too, so is a roster of 47 characters, it's just the choices that are baffling to me. I'd hardly look down on it and say "This is all we're getting?", rather I'd probably put it as "These are the guys we're getting?"

I don't know why you guys think the Gematsu leak is everything we have. For one, the guy seems to have limited and old information, meaning anything could change and the fact that he didn't show Rosalina means he doesn't know everything. (If he knew, he would have revealed her right before the Direct, like X/Y newcomer on the Smash Direct)

Second, not having any secret characters seems really odd, since it's more or less a tradition for Sakurai, and is one of the more enjoyable parts of the game, as I'm sure Sakurai knows.

Lastly, Sakurai knows that characters are a big focus on the Smash fanbase. I doubt he wouldn't add characters with such big hype and reason to be in, and has been teased hardcore, like Ridley and a 3rd DK character, and probably a few others.

The Gematsu leak, is more likely than not, not the full list of newcomers, so unless he's hiding more from us, he obviously doesn't know the whole roster, and his information is obviously outdated also.

We can't know what Mr. Sakurai's values are going into this game.

He's more concerned with character balance this time more than ever, so he may be more interested in improving character quality instead of character quantity. For all that, we still got a very reasonable number of new characters.

Personally, the changes to the existing characters has me more interested than any possible newcomer. Someone like Bowser really needed some drastic changes... Seeing a character you actually like in a state of complete rubbish can be heartbreaking, and everything about Ike in Brawl was a huge letdown for me.

Yesh, which is good evidence that people are much too cavalier about throwing around the word "lock".

I've heard Mewtwo, Ridley, K. Rool, Dixie, etc. all been called a lock at one point or another... and here we are.

Really the only characters who are definite locks are like ~15 of the veterans I'd say, maybe a little more.

The K. Rool DLC movement makes me think that all supporters have lost hope in K. Rool being in the main roster.
It makes sense to start getting things going now for a DLC movement so there can actually be some momentum by the time we know the full roster for sures.

K. Rool is a good a place to start as any... Sakurai is definitely already aware of the Ridley and Mewtwo demand.

Not necessarily. As N3ON said, it's more to strike preemptively than anything. By the time the roster's fully known, assuming K. Rool's not on it, his movement will have several legs up on the countless other movements that are bound to start up. Better to be safe than sorry, you know?

Which makes the scenario worse. He knows how much support these characters have and yet we still haven't seen them. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they had to have been at least considered, but you'd think they would have top priority in terms of character decisions.

We don't know the final initial roster, but we're approaching the release date soon with no signs of these character's fate.

Considering that Mewtwo's a veteran, he has the advantage that even if the Gematsu Trio are the remaining newcomers, he can still be in due to not being a newcomer.

I suspect Mewtwo is DLC (as my guess is Sakurai didn't start "considering" him until after he had already decided on the initial roster - plus he'd be a highly profitable DLC character who wouldn't need a completely new moveset) and Ridley was found to be less than feasible to Sakurai, which is why those two were excluded.

No idea about the lack of DK character though, which is why they'd be perfect for the DLC movement project thingy.

You may not like to hear this, but I don't really think the quantity in which a character is requested should have any relevance in a character's inclusion.

Unless of course they are a league within itself. Like, with Ridley's case, it is better to bring in a classic styled Ridley than an Other M Ridley. Basically characters within their same function and have the same historical significance can be more or less substituted with the same product, only more popular.

I think a good example would be Little Mac. I don't think he had too much support in Japan, however, he was one of the most supported over here in the west. I believe character request plays some sort of role in character decisions.

I don't think character requests should be the top reason, but it should definitely be a decent factor.

Heres a random talking point to interrupt the current topic...

Sonic was the most wanted 3rd party character in the Melee days, and he got in Brawl. Then Mega Man was wanted in the Brawl days, and he got in Sm4sh. Now we also have Pac-Man as icing on the cake. (I may be wrong about the "most wanted" thing though. Didn't spend to much time on the internet back then)

So what would be a good 3rd party character to be in Smash 5? I don't see many of them getting a lot of support on the level of Krool/Ridley/Isaac. Personally I think Bomberman would be cool.

He's also a retro gaming icon.

At the very most demand, regardless of quantity, is enough to bring the character to consideration. High demand versus moderate demand is more or less going to have the same result. And Little Mac is just that; he was reconsidered, and promoted to playable status. It's not like more or less people asking for Little Mac made him playable. He was requested, the team (being a new team for the series with new perspectives) saw the possibilities. For example, they probably considered Ridley as a playable character early in development, but if the same team couldn't think of something they desired within a month of writing him off, I don't think any quantity of people clamouring for him will change that.

Whether or not a character shows up won't change regardless of how many more people hopped on board to see them. He knows people want to see them, and that's enough. He's going to disappoint people no matter what he does. He's used to it. That said, he still listens to fan demand, and people will never actually know how hard he has tried to bring something to conception because they weren't involved with development.

I rather not have third-party characters at all.

I've been a part of a loooooooooooooooot of communities that were certain DLC would happen and/or would fix everything

I don't think I'm capable of getting my hopes up, even for a game like Smash.

I'm with you on Bomberman. He fits the "family friendly" Nintendo label well enough, even though he's a hero who is literally blowing people to pieces with bombs. I think Brawl was his ideal window to get in, but maybe he picks up more steam for the 5th game.

I'll admit I have a soft spot for retro characters.

I would have loved the titular heroine of Valkyrie no Densetsu, what with Namco being on board.

The very notion that DLC fixes things in the first place is wrong. Adding a character, whether popular or not, won't fix anything, the game isn't broken without them.

Only people who have their priorities way out of whack could think adding a specific character via DLC will fix everything.

Okay, I have a theory.

Chrom, Anna, or Robin will be revealed tomorrow. Arena Ferox as a character stage is a terrible fit for both Marth and Ike, and Shulk has had no foreshadowing whatsoever outside of some tweet.

The only other character that's been teased is Ridley, and we have the August Direct to take care of that.

I wouldn't say they're out of whack. What would anyone play Smash Bros for if it didn't have their favorite Nintendo all-stars beating up Jigglypuff?

What I am saying is I believe we're going through the same process as we did in Brawl ("is that it? No way, maybe they've saving ____ for DLC," etc.)

I would say Rayman, but then we have that whole Rayman Legends exclusivity problem that happened. It's probably the safest bet along with Bomberman in terms of Smash 5.

Didn't Brawl add a truckload more characters based on fan-demand than Smash 4 seemingly will?

DLC won't fix anything if people are begging for lame things like Lucas and Roy, that's for sure.
I'm not really sure what's lame about Lucas?

Maybe I'm an odd one here, but when HD screenshots of the final roster get released, am I going to be the only one to blow it up to poster size and hang it on my wall? Because honestly I feel as if this is the best selection of characters we've ever had.

I'm gonna guess a lot of peoples' punching bags this time will shift to the Mii. :smirk:

I agree with that, but even if they were saving whoever as DLC, that wouldn't suddenly change the game to any great extent, it would only fix their subjective desire for that specific character, it wouldn't somehow fix everything.

Why not both?

I will place some of my chips on a Shulk and Chrom dual reveal. :)

Ya know, I have a question. People ***** a lot about the newcomers we've received so far, but.... Didn't Brawl pretty much handle the majority of remaining A-List characters? I mean, besides the 'trinity' of baddies everyone clamors for, I can't really think of that many missing characters that Sakurai left out of Brawl that he didn't add here. Yes, so far there's no MewK.Ley, but.... eh. Brawl added a TON of characters we wanted, and it only makes sense that newer characters get the spotlight this time I feel.

They did, but that in turn led to people getting their hopes ridiculously high that there were just as many hype-inducing secret characters still waiting to be shown.

Not unless they get insta-KO'd when their shield breaks.~

I suppose "fix" was a broad term. Rather, it would convince even the most stubborn of people that Nintendo realizes they failed to meet our (obviously unreasonable at times, understandable at others) demands, and open the floodgates to every other obscure character still being "possible."

Then the other problem lies in people immediately calling Nintendo's decisions heartless/quick cash-grabs and all the time spent developing "insert scapegoat here" should have been spent including the roster additions in the original version to begin with.

I honestly don't mind DLC, but it's a hassle and raises almost as many problems as if "fixes" most of the time.

Your post is basically my previous one with more details. I never stated that characters are only decided upon requests. Like I said earlier, it probably plays some role while deciding characters. And with Ridley, like you said, Ridley was considered but the team felt he would be hard to implement(which to me isn't really the strongest reason to exclude him). Sakurai and his team are most definitely aware that Ridley has a extremely high demand and considered adding him, which is most likely due to his sheer amount of requested and among other things.
He's also a retro gaming icon.
More so over here than in Japan most likely.

Miis are the newcomers who have interested me the most so far. Everyone else I find faults in. I'm waiting for Shulk though. He will be my prize character.
