Since we are so close to E3 and new characters are most definitely going to show up it's time to manage expectations, lets play "worst-case scenario"
-A video shows the character select screen with all characters revealed so far and 7 blank spaces...then Sakurai proudly announces that the Koopalings are joining the fight.
It does not get much worse than that to be perfectly honest. I mean, unless they were all semi-clones of Bowser.

Nah, no Mario. They'll just bring back Honey Queen and give the Baby Metal costume to her.

I actually wouldn't mind a playable Koopaling...(just one though). That might just be the nostalgia speaking, though. Super Mario World was the bread and butter of my childhood gaming career. SMB3 was tight as **** though too...dem airships doe.

Bowser Jr. is a Koopaling? I did not believe that to be the case.
No not at all, but it seems to be the best compromise for having Koopalings in Smash. I also wouldn't put it past Sakurai to include Koopaling abilities into Bowser Jr.'s moveset. They aren't the same, but they have extreme similarities. I wouldn't be shocked to see Bowser Jr throw rings, duplicate or throw bombs/bouncy balls.

...No toxic/fire/electric goop-spewing paintbrush attacks?

I always thought Jr. riding a Bullet Bill would be a good Up or Side Special, but that's an item now, so I guess that won't work.

I think the Koopalings would be better represented doing something else in smash. Like assist trophy, stage hazard, etc. I wouldn't mind a playable koopaling, but it isn't really something I particularly want either.

That's a neat enough idea to incorporate their abilities into Bowser Jr's moveset, but I like the idea of them being an assist (or Bowser Sr's FS) better.

Worst case scenario, we get Pac-Man and Mii. Not terrible, but not too exciting either.

So many things are happening.

Snake's chances have increased so much in such a short time!

Go look at the Snake thread for details!

Though we can't rule out the possibility that this could just be the Phantom Pain Hype Train starting it's engines, this is still very intriguing. June 10th is going to be quite a day...

I feel like all the snake stuff is grasping at straws a little bit... you can see where it says phantom pain at the bottom of the picture; but on the other hand if they were to announce it for the wii u then that betters the chances quite a bit.

until then I don't think theres a point to getting over excited

MGS4 didn't come for the Wii either.

It still got custom content made for it in Brawl.

I'm not saying snakes not going to be in if the games not on wii u. What I'm saying is that the phantom pain announcement and snakes inclusion in smash won't correlate unless they announce it for wii u

Well, the peculiar thing is that apparently Microsoft and Sony are having their conferences on the...9th, I believe? Konami is choosing Nintendo's Smash Bros jam-packed day to talk about Snake. That's why everyone thinks there's a correlation. So Phantom Pain for Wii U could be part of that, as well.

Well of course they aren't going to have their conference the same day as sony and Microsoft bc they would be overshadowed completely.

That implies Konami is competing with them.

Why would Konami compete with Sony and Micro$oft, considering that the game they're trying to promote is being released on their new, shiny systems? If Konami was trying to promote the game as it is, doing it on the same day as Micro$oft and Sony's conference would help them, I'd wager.

I had another point, but I lost it.

It's not that they wouldn't want it promoted, but the point is Microsoft and Sony get a lot of coverage and everyone will be talking about those conferences. If Konami has a conference that same day it'll be talked about but everyone's mainly going to be covering the other conferences so they get pushed out of the spotlight a bit. Now going up against just one major company, nintendo, for press coverage is a lot easier and more beneficial to them.

I was wrong, Microsoft's conference is on the 8th, Sony on the 9th, Nintendo on the 10th. However, I still don't see why a developer needs to pick a day where they won't be overshadowed when they're not promoting a console; they're going to overshadowed regardless, that isn't a bad thing for them.

They don't want to be overshadowed because then they get more press coverage which leads to people talking about their game more. Which leads to hype which ultimately leads to sales. They might not be promoting a console but they still want to promote their games

I still think there is a connection here. Unless the Phantom Pain is getting a Wii U release, they would likely side with Microsoft/Sony. That being said, I think that is what they are hinting at, not Snake in Smash Bros, but on the flip side, if the Phantom Pain is on the Wii U, there's no way Snake isn't in Smash Bros.

Not necessarily, companies have talked about games for certain consoles outside of the day that their main conference is held, it wouldn't be surprising for it to happen again. It's certainly possible that they timed it in accordance with Nintendo, but it could also just be coincidence, particularly since we have no information hinting that Phantom Pain will make that jump onto Wii U at this point in time.

If we get more that hints at that prospect, then we can start more accurately gauging the possibility, but for now there's just not that much to go on.

Well, there was more than just this, I believe. I think there was a tweet from Sean Schemmel directed at GameXplain and Gray Fox's VA but I don't remember the details. It might be a mistake or something like most tweets like these are.

Potentially, but remember that Rob Paulsen is also Ash Paulsen's (the guy who works at GameXplain) father, so there is that connection between those two that could explain why he was included.

Edit: Also, it seems Rob Paulsen was included because he retweeted it, which Sean replied to.
