It's very likely. This close to the 3DS release and we only have 27 characters? Unless it's a deluge of veteran and newcomer announcements, the clock is going to be what ends this. Remember, both rosters are identical, so they can't pad around and play the waiting game with WiiU.
We have 30 characters. And remember that before Brawl's release we only had third parties and the starters. We then got unlockables, which were veterans and newcomers alike.

We'll have more characters. For God's sake we have a 90 minute smash direct at E3. And then E3 itself. We'll see something.

I don't think Wario is THAT far fetched. I'm confident he'll be revealed with Mario Kart 8, or maybe it's wishful thinking on my part.

We're at 27 and more on track to the 40 I quoted either and, again, I strongly doubt that there will be unlockable characters. Unlockable songs, maybe stages, customizations, sure. But characters will all be available from the start(so the entire roster is the starting roster) to satisfy those that want to run tourneys out of the gate to ride the hype wave. Will they all be on display at BB? Don't know, but they're running out of time to make announcements otherwise and save themselves from being spoiled.
Count again before you correct people.

1. Ike
2. Greninja
3. Charizard
4. Yoshi
5. Sheik
6. Zero Suit Samus
7. Diddy Kong
8. Lucario
9. Little Mac
10. Kind Dedede
11. Zelda
12. Rosalina & Luma
13. Marth
14. Sonic
15. Toon Link
16. Peach
17. Luigi
18. Pikmin & Olimar
19. Mario
20. Villager
21. Donkey Kong
22. Link
23. Megaman
24. Samus
25. Kirby
26. Wii Fit Trainer
27. Fox
28. Pikachu
29. Bowser
30. Pit

Ugh, I internalized some of those separate characters in the counts. Either way, the point stands. Even just to reach the conservative estimate I provided, they'd have to reveal no less than two or three characters per week(because the Invitational will likely be full rosters) and E3 will be the Invitational + Release Date + Final Arriving Character(Likely the last newcomer in Chrom). To reach 50... It'd have to be a new character every day from here on out.

How would you know it's gonna be the full roster? Do you have some inside information that literally nobody else has?

Working under the assumption there would be NO secret characters or massive info dump at E3, which are BIG assumptions. (3 out of 3 Smash games had unlockable characters, but this one doesn't because I say so.)

Speculation, plain and simple. Speculation backed by the fact that Sakurai removed SSE because he disliked it being spoiled so early, so I think he wants to reveal all of the roster on his terms. Which means he'll need to reveal characters very quickly to make the E3 deadline(presuming the game isn't released in a timely manner afterward). 40 makes sense given likely time constraints and resources, as well as the fact that the Invitational will demand the wide field the full roster provides.

Guesswork, but not totally unfounded I feel.

Imagine the nuclear fire that would result if someone wasn't able to play their main at that tournament only to have them revealed an hour later.

EDIT: Drat double post. Apologies! >.<;

No one has a main, the game hasn't launched yet. The only unrevealed and popular characters at tourneys are Falco, Ice Climbers, and Metaknight, anyway.

Edit: yeah, boards have been bad with loading new posts, I don't blame you for any double posts.

It would be nonsense to hold an official, sanctioned tournament just to pull a rug and reveal "Falco was hiding here all along!" These aren't UMvC3 test-plays, this is a tournament setting, with an admittedly unknown prize(maybe just bragging rights, free copy of the game(s), cash). Tournament settings would demand the entirely of the metagame to be available at least to be able to figure out.

Now, Sakurai may decide 'tournament settings' could be items on showing off the boss mechanics on a boss stage because he's utterly unpredictable. I dunno.

Just step back and look the roster. We have 30 now. I consider the following to be practically guaranteed:

31. Captain Falcon
32. Metaknight
33. Ice Climbers
34. Mr. Game and Watch
35. Ness
36. Falco
37. Wario
38. Gannondorf

That would leave us with TWO slots left for:

Possible Veterans:
Jiggly Puff, Mewtwo Wolf, ROB, Lucas, Snake, Roy, Ivysaur, Squirtle

Newcomers from the Sal Leak:
Palutena, Pacman, Mii, Shulk, Chorus Men, Chrom

Fan Favorite Newcomers:
King K. Rool, Isaac, Krystal, Takamaru, Ridley, Dixie Kong, Duck Hunt Dog, Ghirahim, etc.

It just doesn't add up. Also, this tournament is a fun fan thing from Nintendo. I think you are reading too much into it.

It would only come off poorly if they revealed characters immediately after the tournament - they don't have to do that. They could just as easily wait a month or two before revealing another character that hadn't been playable. Players would understand in that situation. Arguments aside, we really don't know anything about what the tournament roster is going to look like. It may just be the characters revealed up to E3, or fewer. If we do indeed have unlockable characters, it could very well just be the starting roster. As someone said earlier, no one has a Smash 4 main yet. No one's played it yet. There is no metagame. Every player will be on even footing in that they're all new to Smash 4 and its selection of characters.

Aside from the Puff(who's in due to veterancy), I doubt any of the other 'possible veterans' are coming back, and aside from Chrom, I really don't see those newcomers happening. Fan-favorites, well, when has Sakurai paid much attention to that aside from maybe giving them a larger space on the dartboard he uses to decide on characters?

At this point, I wouldn't even count on Puff and the O12 veterancy to be relevant. Little Mac's neutral-B easily replaces Falcon Punch in both utility and power, and he moves at about the same speed. I could see Puff, Falcon, Ness and G&W at-risk, if not gone already.

Daily reminder that Chrom is on the Gematsu leak. This means nothing for or against Chrom's inclusion.
I'll remove him if he's not revealed at E3 as one of the WFT reveals, that determines if I cut him.
I doubt Sakurai is putting characters at E3 just to shock people. Wii Fit Trainer was more likely added for the casual audience (although I really doubt that'll do anything for sales).
So considering the changes to other veterans, I wonder if Sakurai will go back to his original concept of Ike have a projectile.

I think that would be pretty awesome, but would it make him OP? Not that I care. The guy fights for his friends and gives no sympathy. He's the man.
Perhaps, maybe this time they'll make it work.
Chrom at E3.

Tables being flipped.

Hilariously heated debates.

Make it happen, Sakurai!:troll:
All there would be left to debate is whenever or not Roy becomes the fourth Fire Emblem character. I think this is most accurate; he's possible, but not likely. If we get character DLC, though, then I think he has a really good shot of showing up.
Well that shook things up. Huh. I had a particular image I thought looked fairly good but yeah it's dead now. So with Ike's return, a new FE rep's probably coming soon on his heels(both current FE representatives were revealed in fairly lackluster 'fanfare') with a trailer to boot. I figure they'll be the last newcomer though, the rest'll likely be brawl vets of some familiar stripe(I imagine Wolf, ROB, PT, Lucas, and Snake are gone). Makes the roster 40 characters, which is a nice round number. Not thrilled with that outcome, but it's realistic. Also, I don't think there will be unlockable characters this time around, given not only Sakurai's thoughts on SSE being spoiled and thus abandoning such a mode, but Namco's history with Tekken and Soulcalibur generally having all characters immediately available at the start to allow tourney play and the like.
We're not getting less than forty-five characters.

Sal Romano has already leaked Palutena, Shulk, Chrom, Mii, Pac-Man, and Chorus Men, which brings us to thirty-six characters (counting currently confirmed Brawl characters). If they were to unfortunately cut Snake, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Lucas, R.O.B., and Wolf (which, btw, we're not seeing six cuts), that'd bring us up to forty-five characters.
:snype:

I'm not so sure, and if Mewtwo IS in for some reason, then that puts someone else at risk(likely G&W). I just don't see going beyond 40 characters. Screen real estate is a real thing, and 40 lines up very nicely and is reasonably compact. Brawl had four rows of eight, this will have four rows of ten. Maybe a random toggle on the player display for random select.
Uh, no. Sakurai isn't going to cut characters to keep things neat and organized. He adds what he (or the Pokemon Company) wants to see in the game. If he wants forty-seven characters and can get them all in, he will do that.
52 is a good number, but I'm not expecting all that many newcomers, so I stick to 48, personally. It still leaves room for 11 newcomers, which is plenty, not to mention replacing any possible cuts.

Speaking of which, things look pretty bad for Lucas, sadly. I'd say he's in the most danger out of everyone. :(
Unlike Ike, Lucas can't get replaced by anyone else and he was a high-priority characters in Brawl. If Ike can come back despite risk of replacement, Lucas is definitely returning. There's no reason to cut him. I don't think you have to worry here.

Alright, no offense meant, but I can't really take you seriously now. Falcon is practically a mascot to the series, more so then his home series.

Well, we all agree that E3 will likely mark the reveal of at least one character, if not several ala the Smash Direct. At least one person will likely lose out on a familiar playstyle if that's the case, and I wouldn't blame them for getting hotheaded at being unfairly handicapped. Yes, the in-depth metagame isn't developed, but if you've played Falco since Melee and suddenly 'uh oh Falco's MIA', you're at a disadvantage however you slice it. Imagine how furious you'd be if later in the day or later during E3 they go "here's a few vets including this blue bird dude!"

I have to stop you right there.

Captain Falcon is one of the most recognizable characters in this series. If Ike is coming back, there's no way in hell Captain Falcon is going anywhere.

Recency isn't everything.

I understand it's insanity to say, but I can't discount it now. Samurai Goroh AT proves nothing, and Mac's nB is like the Falcon Kick and Falcon Punch combined. After all, wasn't everyone saying the same thing when Mewtwo didn't show up for Brawl?

A Fire Emblem like counter is JUST like Falcon Kick. Let's also discount Captain Falcon's good to amazing air game (depending on the game) when Mac is all about being terrible in the air. SAME PLAYSTYLE GUYS.

Little Mac's playstyle has more in common with Roy then Falcon.

Saying the same thing about what? There's literally nothing that points to Captain Falcon being removed.
If anything, he's practially confirmed because Sakurai mentioned him directly in an interview.

And why would they show off Samurai Goroh intentionally if Falcon wasn't back? That makes absolutely no sense, that would be like cutting Mario and replacing him with Waluigi. Goroh may not be playable, but that's not the point.

Oh nice you played the game? Can you tell us all the characters that are in?

You might as well say Wario is at risk because Mac's up B looks like Wario's. You can't just decide whether or not a similar looking move functions like the original, that's premature.

Not to mention if we get rid of Falcon we're stripping an entire series of its playability. We got rid of Mewtwo in Brawl, but we still had Pikachu, Trainer, Jigglypuff, and Lucario.

There's so much to respond to. I think we should take @ EbonyRubberWolf EbonyRubberWolf to the Smash 4 Bets thread :troll:
There will be more than 1 newcomer yet to be revealed, NO DOUBT.

I dunno why they'd show the AT off like they did. I could ask the same of the dreaded Shadow. And even if Falcon is safe, there's a lot of sadly cuttable material up there in one-shot Brawl vets just waiting for the blade to fall. 40's it I think. The time constraints WRT the Invitational, graphic layout, character saturation, and overall look just make sense, at least to me.

EDIT: Well, I can make this good. If my 40-character prediction is wrong, I will accept a lifetime ban from the forums.

There aren't any "one-shots" on the Brawl roster that are obvious cuts. Every character they picked deserved it. That's why it's so hard to predict who will get cut.

That being said, the only ones that have a chance of being cut are Wolf, Lucas, and Snake. I already think Ivysaur and Squirtle are out, but them too.

I think Goroh was confirmed before Falcon was in Brawl.

Though at this point it kinda feels like we're ganging up on you... So I'm gonna stop now.
