I was strictly speaking about the article. Though I sincerely doubt a game that was revealed nearly a year (and announced two years before that) before the NFC announcement would be part of the line up, especially if Smash 3DS is supposedly releasing soon.

I didn't see the edit in the article before your comment, which is why I asked.

I regards to the NFC, I believe the Wii U controller has actually had NFC compatibility since launch. Also, the statement only mentioned Wii U connectivity, so the 3DS isn't really an issue.

Not really, everyone that believes that Mewtwo and Jigglypuff are returning are delusional. Everyone that believes that Mewtwo or Jigglypuff will not return are delusional. People who believe that any other Pokemon has a chance are even more delusional. The only people that win are those who believe that each has a chance to return, and each has a chance to get be omitted (no ****).

Personally, I think if it comes down to only having five Pokemon characters (kind of a step down from Brawl, isn't it?), the fifth slot will go to Jigglypuff. I know that her status as an original veteran doesn't make her impossible to cut, but I have a very hard time imaging they would cut her out now in favor of Mewtwo, especially when they had no trouble returning Jigglypuff over Mewtwo in Brawl.

Nothing else, we already got our Pokemon newcomer, the only debates we can have is Mewtwo vs. Jigglypuff or Mewtwo and Jigglypuff.

Perhaps. But that doesn't really explain why Jigglypuff got in over Mewtwo in Brawl, I think. Considering how close to completion Mewtwo was, you'd think they could have ditched Jigglypuff in favor of bringing Mewtwo back. After all, Mewtwo was still a very popular Pokemon at that time, and technically more significant than Jigglypuff. The fact that they kept Jigglypuff despite that means something, I think.

How does Jigglypuff being low priority in Brawl mean anything now?

Just because she was "low priority in Brawl doesn't mean she wasn't important. She's a ball with eyes, of course they're going to have her lower priority because she's freaking easy to make.

And on top of that, there are seven characters that were cut from Brawl, and Jigglypuff wasn't one of them.

edit: Also, yes, Mewtwo was cut before her, although that can be argued against as Mewtwo has a lot more demand/reason now.

'Twas definitely a factor, I think. But time in general was the biggest problem.

Not really much. I guess you could say it's possible we'll see Sceptile/Blaziken as 3rd Gen Pokémon DLC, but that depends on if we even get character DLC.

I believe that is true, Sonic's inclusion late in the development apparently messed things up in regards to the rest of the roster. Though based on data found in the game, Mewtwo was very close to completion, so I think it's possible that, if they really wanted to bring Mewtwo back, they could have scrapped the not-so-important-or-popular Jigglypuff to focus on Mewtwo. That's not what happened, though.

I suppose one reason still qualifies as more. However, Mewtwo got another entire movie recently. He was also the poster boy for Mega-Evos, which were one of the bigger features in XY (arguably bigger than Fairy, which Jiggs wasn't even the poster for). I could see them chosing him over Jiggs, assuming we only get five.

Speaking of Jiggs, something interesting was noted at the Jigglypuff thread during a debate when the Bellossum picture was used.

Different characters have different sleep animations, and the bubbles and pink hue aren't constant. I will give up on the Wii Fit Trainer pic however, considering there's nothing there that can prove it's sleep or knockdown other than Sakurai's translated message. But the Bellossum pic most certainly shows a sleeping Shiek, because of the sleep bubbles and the same exact sleep animation she had in Brawl.

The reason I believe the presence of the sleep effect effectively confirms Jigglypuff is because the effect is redundant with the dizzy effect around and being possible in any match. (That isn't a Jigglypuff only match, funnily enough.) Since the dizzy animation has to exist and functions exactly the same as sleep, sleep is essentially dizzy with a different animation. Why go though the trouble of porting over and making new sleep animations if it's redundant? Same as before, it's for a character's signature gimmick, and that character is in all likelyhood Jigglypuff. Not exactly a ton of characters that can even put others to sleep, much less as their signature move from their series.

But seriously folks, Pokemon can warrant six characters since it had 6 in Brawl and was supposed to have 7 (or 8).
I personally find Mewtwo to be higher priority this time around. He's the most popular Smash candidate in the world and the fact that Sakurai didn't have enough time to program him in Brawl makes me think that he'll make sure he's finished this time. After all he was "considering" him about a year ago and if Mewtwo is even considered for the game I'm betting that he makes it.
As for competition with Puff, she is very easy to make, sharing animations with Kirby. This is the reason I feel she got in over Mewtwo in Brawl. They were both low priority but ultimately Jiggs was easier to make.
I doubt it will come to this again, but if they are both low priority and Sakurai can only choose one it would likely be Jigglypuff for is reason. However I expect Mewtwo to be pretty high priority this time around, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Why assume we only get five? We got six in Brawl, and were expecting six before Greninja was confirmed. And some people are still expecting seven (Sceptile, though I don't)
