I don't know how I feel about those figurines in terms of Smash Bros. I mean really, I don't see what they would do for the game if they were already available to play as in the game. So like, Mario, Samus, Link, DK...etc...

However, it DOES make me think that there will be DLC characters via those figures. But that's a hunch that I could be completely wrong about. We'll just have to wait and see on that one.

NFC =/= DLC

That may only be a means of storing custom movesets or other data within figures of the initial characters. I don't see why that would automatically mean they will use NFC to add new characters to the game.
Either way, obsessive collector that I am, I will end up buying every figure they release, regardless of what it does.

And, on the subject of DLC, I am in favor of it IF:
1. It adds to the game without messing up the balance.
2. It is only used as a way to add features to the game that were not possible to add during development for whatever reason.

I do feel that DLC stages are more likely than fighters, but I could be wrong. I would be open to buying, say, SSB64 or SSBM stage packs a few months after release.

On another note, if any one Nintendo series can utilize NFC figures to successfully tap into that very lucrative market while actually making interesting use of the feature, that series is Smash Bros.

If DLC is handled like Capcom's Street Fighter x Tekken or Marvel VS Capcom 3, then yes I despise DLC. However, if the game feels content and DLC is added later, then sure I'm up for that.

Well only a little bit of that locked content was actually DLC; there was actual DLC planned, but they instead made it a retail release (Ultimate)

edit: But yes, that was cheap regardless.

Just to be clear here, the French publication made an error. There will be no NFC for Smash.

I don't hate DLC if it's not on-disc. I like large rosters and feverishly hate cuts, so DLC seems like the perfect way to bring them back.

Personally, I would just make the past FE lords (Ike and Roy), one of the Pokemon (Mewtwo or Jigglypuff), and Snake as DLC, but most people want everyone on the main roster.

If Ike comes back I would personally like to see his model changed to that which he has in Radiant Dawn, I felt his play style in Brawl was too slow for the PoR model which they used because, while certainly, Ragnell is a two-handed sword, Ike's body type in PoR is slim to the point where I feel he should've played more as a middleweight. Additionally, I feel that if they do switch to Ike's newer model (if he comes back) that he won't need any significant changes speed-wise, because as I already said he played like a heavyweight, which he definitely is with his Radiant Dawn model.

On another note regarding lords they could bring in as DLC, I'd be all for Ephraim making an appearance, Sacred Stones has yet to get any solid representation in Smash as part of the Fire Emblem franchise.

I believe the NFC Figures could be used to save your custom moveset for the character on the base and then placed on other Wii U / 3DS systems for use elsewhere. It's probably tied with a name too.

Could be useful for tournaments that allow them, or just for people that enjoy playing a specific set and would like to play with it elsewhere so they don't have to make it again. It may also be the new way to unlock characters if you're lazy and don't want to unlock them ingame like in previous games before (ala Subspace Emissary).

I wouldn't mind DLC, but I don't think Sakurai would actually implement DLC characters. As far as figurines go, it works really well with the SSB universe, with the trophies and all. I think DLC characters could work, but I'm only expecting more alternate costumes and such.

I think DLC Music Trophies, and Costumes would be excellent; Smash Bros prides itself for it's massive collection of content; DLC such as this would not have to require that much effort; it's simply fanservice.

Do you actually have proof to back this up?
Why do I need proof when multiple sites (bar the one that's linked here) reported that the text was removed? Though checking it again, the text was readded, so whatever.

Either way the author said that Smash will be coming in October but then changed it to "summer" according to a French guy I follow, so take the whole thing for granted.

EDIT: Nintendo UK made an official statement.

I don't see why you would hate the idea of DLC characters. As long as they bring something new to the table, aren't expensive, and are balanced, I'd be fine with them.
I would even be fine with them if they were redundant without bringing anything new to the table. I wouldn't mind if they were expensive, and I wouldn't mind if they weren't balanced. Why?

(goes to copy and paste obvious and objective argument that everyone should adhere to...)

Because I don't have to buy them if I don't want to.

That statement is such a non-answer though. Besides, it's not as if they're just going to come out and confirm something that was never meant to be disclosed in the first place.

I do believe we should remain sceptical, but nothing has been proven one way or the other.

Yes, yes! I don't understand why people don't understand that they don't HAVE to buy them. Different mindsets, I suppose.

The only "bad" DLC would be content that's already in the game's data, just inaccessible until you purchase the DLC "code" to unlock it. i.e. the **** Capcom does.

Then it's just a marketing scam.

The figures are going to be used by Super Smash Bros. by a preponderance of the evidence. You can remain sceptile if you want.

On the note of DLC, my personal wishes would go as follows:
  • Day One is fine, but not if it's on-disc. There's a 6 week period between the game being finished and the game being available on store shelves that gives the devs time to make DLC, so there's no reason for them not to take advantage of it.
  • Use DLC to re-implement cut veterans, but do not charge for it. I wouldn't want a Jigglypuff/Ike/Wolf/Ivysaur/Squirtle/Snake/whatever user to have to pay a cent more than anyone else. The only exception I'd make is for Mewtwo, who would likely be redesigned to the point of being a newcomer with the same name in needing both a completely revamped moveset as well as not having been a Smash Bros. character for over a decade now. Point being, anyone from Brawl who was intended to return but couldn't due to time restraints should be available without having to pay for them.
  • Use paid DLC to take advantage of extra costumes and music, but not to add things that affect gameplay outside of characters and ported returning stages (i.e. modes, items, Assist Trophies/Pokemon). Remade N64 and Melee stages are fine if I have to pay for them, honestly, but mere ports from Brawl should not be charged for. I'm neutral on Trophies and Stickers, but I'd prefer those kinds of thing to be unlocked rather than paid for.
  • moveset swaps pls

I still think the figures will be used to unlock in game trophies.

Although I do love the idea of custom movesets being held by the figure.

I would buy them if they didn't do squat, since they are bound to look cool and be good quality.
I'm a Nintendo collector so yeah.

Ike, Jigglypuff, Snake, Ivysaur, Squirtle, Roy, Dr. Mario, Young Link, Pichu for figurines!
No! Ike should be on the disc! :c
The rest would be great choices. I'd buy all of them even if I didn't like the character because I'm that pathetic.

Third-Party DLC would be really weird; I suppose it is entirely possible. But in Snake's case, I feel as though it is in-game roster or bust.
