Before my past few months browsing Smash Boards, I never knew the amount of hatred for Pac-Man's new design. Being an avid Pac-Man fan, I've loved every design he's gone through, but the newest one is by far my favorite. He's got so much personality and he's so animated and adorable, but on Smash Boards, everyone says he's creepy and horrible and that they wanna barf looking at him. I just don't see it. I understand the appeal of classic Pac-Man. It was simple. He was a circle with a wedge cut out, and he ate everything. But that was basically it. He had no personality and no depth. He was literally a circle with a wedge cut out. But even back during the old arcade games, Pac-Man's true look was similar to what it is now. On the Japanese arcade machines, he had arms, legs, gloves, and boots, just like he does now. He has
always been this way.
I dunno. Just personal opinions. I just don't see how this
has more personality and appeal than this.
*shruging forever*
I'll shut up about Pac-Man stuff now. xD
I can actually explain this with a bit of psychology.
When something looks similar to a human, it is subconsciously judged to be "cute" or "creepy". Normally, if something has features similar to a baby, it is considered "cute". If it has features similar to a predator, it's considered "creepy". (It's more complicated than that, but bear with me.)
See this guy? Cute, isn't he? He has big eyes, a small mouth, a round head, and a tiny nose. All of these are things that babies have too.
See this guy? He's kinda creepy, isn't he? Well, he has small eyes, a big nose, sharp teeth, claws, and horns. All of these are things that potential predators have.
(This is just the basic gist of it. It's a little more complicated than that, and I only showed the opposite sides of the spectrum, but that's the general rule.)
Now, the line that we draw between "cute" and "creepy" is not the same from person to person. One person may consider something "cute" and another may consider it "creepy".
Look at this. It has big eyes, a small "nose", and a rounded head. Those are all things that should make it "cute".
However, it also has talons, a sharp beak, disheveled feathers (if something looks disheveled, it's more likely to carry desease), and it's hunched over. Those are all things that should make it "creepy".
Some people will think this bird is cute, and others will not.
Still with me? Good. Well, let's look at Pac-Man's designs.
This Pac-Man has big, black eyes, a big, smiling mouth, a small nose, and overall soft, rounded features. This Pac-Man is almost always considered "cute" to some degree due to its simplicity.
In Pac-Man's more recent appearance, he has been given more details in his design and appears more human than he did before. While he has everything he had before, he is also paler, has noticeable hands, emotive eyes, a larger mouth, and a larger nose.
Some would argue that he's still cute and loveable. Others, however, would argue that the added details make him look disproportionate and creepy.
He straddles the subjective line between cute and creepy that humans subconsciously draw.
That's why the design is so controversial. Pure human psychology.
