But Ryu is still making appearances on Nintendo consoles.

When we get a third party character that your grandma doesn't recognize maybe then we can talk about Shantae and Shovel Knight. These guys are not icons that deserve to crash a Nintendo party.

I'm pretty sure my grandma doesn't know who Snake is.

I really don't see how Metal Gear would be known by most non-gamers. (Then again I knew what Kid Icarus was before I knew what Final Fantasy was because Brawl.)

For perspective I only knew the Mario cast when I played Melee and was surprised Mario was a Dr and thought Ness was Diddy Kong (from the box art. It's the hat)

That included thinking shiek was a dude and samus was a robot.

I was 3 when 64 came out.
I knew from Mario Party & Tennis

from Red, Blue, Yellow, Stadium, and Snap.... and the show.

I thought was cool, was a robot, was a power ranger, and was a mage... and knew from the INTRO to OoT, more details below.

Melee? 5 years. Still knew from Mario Party, as my first "real' Mario game was sunshine.

Had yet to play one of the games, but my first words to him were "Great, another Star Fox character."
Mesal Gear Solid was what made me recognize him.

WELL aware of who they were.. and yeah I 100%ed the Galaxy games

I own Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, and Super Star Ultra.

I was far older than the rest of you. In fact I still am. Smash 64 I was ten, but had grown up in a Sega household so my Nintendo knowledge was limited.

Were the only ones I knew the names of. I'd never heard of , or even . I had seen and around but knew nothing about their games

By the time Melee rolled around I was more knowledgable:
and even which I had played as a kid.
But and stumped me. To this day I still haven't played a Star Fox.

Come Brawl I knew these guys:
(one of the few I played as a kid)/ and were known, but I and Stumped me.

With Smash 4 I pretty much knew all the newcomers, even Wii Fit Trainer.

The only character I didn't know before Smash4 was Greninja (seriously);... Lucina, Robin or Shulk I had at least seen.. but never cared about their games or who they are (probably I still don't care.. but Xenoblade Chronicles music is amazing );..
--At Brawl's times, I didn't know, once more, a Fire Emblem character: Ike.. and again, back to Melee, Marth and Roy.

EDIT: Oh, and I was little, playing Smash64, I thought that Kirby was a Pokémon; but that being aware of his games and such.. =P

Melee was my first Smash game, and I was about 9 when it came out. I recognised:

My brother and I played Red and Blue when they came out and were big fans of the anime
I had played Oracle of Seasons and recognised Link from magazines
Kirby was my favourite series at the time and my very first main
My brother and I played Lylat Wars religiously when we were little

I had a vague inkling as to who these characters were:

I knew he was Mario, though I had never played Dr Mario
I knew Zelda was the title character in The Legend of Zelda, though I had never seen her before
I knew of Game & Watch, didn't know that's what he was supposed to be at first
I caught on fairly quickly that he was a young version of Link (you don't say?), hadn't played Ocarina of Time

I had no idea who the following were:

Never heard of F-Zero, I thought he was a superhero of some kind
To be fair, I doubt most of us knew who these two were
Not a clue
Even less of a clue
I saw the name "Ness" and thought he was either a young Mario or an anthropomorphic personification of the NES
Yeah, I thought "he" was a robot, though it wasn't the skeleton that clued me in - it was the all-female fighters event
Absolutely no idea, though the opening cutscene hinted that she was a Zelda character
Didn't know either, didn't realise until after he'd been unlocked that he had a cameo in the opening cutscene

When Brawl came around, I was a tad more knowledgeable, and of the newcomers, I recognised:

My most-wanted newcomer at the time, Wario Land was one of my favourite series when I was little
Recognised him from magazines and spinoffs
My brother being a huge Pokémon fan, these came easily to me
Again, I was a huge Kirby fan in my youth and recognised these guys instantly
Loved Wind Waker, and he's also my favourite incarnation of Link
I had heard of Kid Icarus from magazines and was familiar with Pit as a character
I had played Zero Mission and recognised her from that
My brother played Path of Radiance and I recognised him from that
I had played Pikmin 1 and 2 and was delighted to see him in the roster
Again, Lylat Wars, though I knew he was in the game due to hint guides
I recognised him from magazines, and he was my favourite character in Mario Kart DS
My favourite thing in the universe as a child, this goes without saying
My mother (yes, you read that right) was a devout fan of Metal Gear Solid 2 when it was first released

The only newcomer I didn't recognise was , though I figured from the design that he was from the same game as Ness.

I recognised almost every newcomer in Smash 4 and was actively involved in speculation for the first time; the only one I wasn't familiar with was , and while I had heard of the Xeno series before I knew of Shulk, I didn't hear of the character until I started speculating and didn't know anything about him until his trailer.

In the original Smash on 64 I knew everyone except these characters . I think I was 5 or 6 when I first played this game at my friends house.

In Melee I had still only really played Mario, Kirby, and Pokemon games so my knowledge of Nintendo characters was limited, so these characters I didn't know .
Unlike most people who played Melee I actually knew who was just didn't know his name.

In the era of GameCube was when I really started to play more Nintendo games (and games in general). I bought my first Zelda game thanks to Smash introducing me to the series and the recommendation of a friend, but I still didn't know who these characters were .

Now with Smash 4 I knew every character before they were in Smash thanks to the internet and Smashboards speculation. However, I hadn't played games with these characters

Oh, I forgot about Mr. Game & Watch... but to be fair, he's more like an original Smash character than anything else.. About Ice Climbers, well, I played a lot Ice Climber and other games like Kid Icarus in one of those NES clones I had (but that, even after playing Smash64 for the first time).

Knew About:
I had a Super NES with Super Mario World, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, and Kirby Super Star, so that was pretty straightforward. Obviously, Pokemon was huge at the time, so it was pretty much impossible to not have heard of Pikachu (or, if you watch the anime, Jigglypuff). As for Link, I never owned a Link to the Past for the Super Nintendo, but Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie were the first games that we had gotten for the Nintendo 64, so that helped.

Sort of Knew:
I played Star Fox 64 at a friend's house, and thanks to a large poster that came with my Super NES, I knew about Super Metroid, but I didn't actually own those games at the time, so I didn't know as much about those characters.

No Idea:
I hadn't heard of those games until Smash Bros.

When it came to Melee, it was pretty straightforward...

Knew About:
See the N64 Smash Bros. section for most of them. I had gotten Star Fox 64 at a pawn shop since then, so I had actually played it, and Falco was my favourite character.

Sort of Knew:
I had a few Game & Watch Galleries for the Game Boy, so I at least knew what a Game & Watch was.

No Idea:
Like many people, I had no idea what Fire Emblem was, and Ice Climber was (and still sort of is) a really obscure NES game.

In regards to Brawl...

Knew About:
Pikmin was one of the first titles that I got for the Gamecube, and I had played Metroid Prime 1 by this point so I was more familiar with the Metroid games. I had at least played Kid Icarus on an emulator at that point (hadn't gotten very far in it, but I at least knew who Pit was). Diddy was one of my most-wanted at the time, as were the Kirby characters and Wario, and you'd have to be living under a rock for years to not know about Sonic.

Sort of Knew:

Most of these, I only knew by reputation - I hadn't played any Fire Emblem, Mother 3, or Metal Gear games (though Snake's inclusion quickly got me to find a copy of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes online), and I stopped playing Pokemon after the third generation. I only knew ROB from Mario Kart DS.

For the latest game, I feel like I was familiar with everyone (well, as familiar as you can get with a character like the Wii Fit Trainer - I had at least heard of the game). I managed to find a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii, bought Kid Icarus Uprising when I got my 3DS in anticipation for a character from that making it into the game (though I honestly didn't expect that it would get so much attention), and we bought Pikmin 3 and Fire Emblem Awakening at some point along the line. I had only played Duck Hunt briefly, but I knew about the dog at the very least.

I had played Punch-Out through Animal Crossing and rented the Wii game, and as far as third party characters go, I had the Mega Man Anniversary Collection (as well as several Battle Network games), Pac-Man World 2 (with Pac-Man Vs., plus I had played the original game a few times), and Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers for the Super NES for quite some time, so there were no issues there.

I definitely thought Chrom was the most viable candidate, but was my most wqnted for FE
Didn't really think of her or have more than mild interest

after i bought xenoblade infell in love instantly
wanted him in melee so much i wrote a moveset back then.
i actualy expected her becaus ei thought there were "hardware reps" game and watch and ROB

I also considered duck hunt to rep the zapper but thought wii fit made more sense

Kinda wanted him transforming to shadow Mario and also using his paintbrush instead of clown copter I kinda expected him

- One of my most wanted newcomers
- I had little faith on his inclusion, but I always wanted to have in the cast as well (among my Top 5 picks).
- Never had the opportunity to join an official support thread, but I was always an enthusiastic of his presence in Smash since Brawl allowing guest characters!
- Never cared about, but since the Gematsu leak I've seen too much hate on them, so, I turned supportive to the cause and I was very excited with the possibility of inclusion of Miis.
- Pac-Man was my MOST wanted character and guest; Was really crazy the day of his confirmation; Good times! =)
- I was the (second) owner of Ryu's support thread; I'm a big Street Fighter fan. =)

now, I'm still bummed that Ashley, Ridley and Dillon never got in the cast... but I still have some characters with high expectations! (see my signature)

EDIT: oh.. for the other newcomers;.. yeah, maybe I was expecting at least Palutena and a new Pokémon (without help of any leaks), and maybe Chrom over Lucina (and no other FE character).. but all the other characters was very unexpected/indifferent to my speculations.. principally 'cause I believed in the supposed Sakurai statement of Smash4 having less newcomers (and probably a smaller cast) than Brawl.

: Had no idea who any of these characters were because Smash 64 was one of the first games I played in my life. I only partially recognized and because of the PKMN anime.

: At this point of time, I played SM64 and a bunch of Mario spinoffs so I easily recognized these characters. and fit this mold as well though I did recognize them for games relating to their respective series (Yoshi Story, DKC, DK64). I did know mainly because I played a Dr. Mario game at a McDonald's beforehand.

: Star Fox 64 got me really familiar with these 2 before Melee. I was shocked to see Falco in the game personally (this is a time before I used the internet often mind you).

: OoT and MM really got me familiar with these characters so I was happy to see them in the game. especially because I thought he would do all the cool things he did in OoT and I was disappointed when I found out he was a Falcon clone.

: Played F-Zero on the SNES as well as F-Zero X.

: I was crazy about Pokemon at this point of time (via the games and anime) so it brought me great joy to see all these characters in the game.

: Kirby 64 got me interested in him.

: Recognized him from Smash 64 though I had no idea where he was from. My initial impression was that since his rep icon was the Earth, I assumed he was supposed to represent the real world somehow lol.

: These 2 struck me as odd because they were realistic looking characters in a Smash Bros game. I thought they were both from an LoZ-like game until I played their respective games many many years later and became one of my favorite characters in both Smash and FE. I also thought they were Spanish for some reason as well lol.
