Falco has been changed enough that he could probably be considered a semi-clone at this point. Either way, definitely keep him; he's Fox's second in command after all.

Wolf is juuuust barely a semi-clone imo. Similar specials, build, and the same Final Smash. But the most different clone in the series that hasn't been fully diversified (Luigi, Jigglypuff).

tl;dr: Falco is more important, Wolf is more unique.
I guess you are right on that point.

Let's make a list with the villains of each series

(Bold indicates who I think is viable.)
  • :4mario: - Basically fully covered with Bowser, Bowser Jr., and the Koopalings
  • :4link: - Ganon is brought up, but there's the identity issue.
  • :4dk: - King K. Rool, of course.
  • :4samus: - Ridley, although Sakurai gave his reasons.
  • :4pit: - There's Hades and Medusa, but the less said about another KI character, the better.
  • :4marth::4pikachu: - Doesn't have a single, notable villain.
  • :4kirby: - Dark Matter is the overarching villain, who keeps getting shout-outs in the games, and has a sword form, which can be considered viable.
  • :4littlemac: - King Hippo's there, and arguably Donkey Kong, though the franchise probably won't get a new character unless it gets more games.
  • :4fox: - Wolf, even if he technically isn't, still fills the same niche. - No overarching villain.
  • :4ness: - Porky may be considered un-viable given his boss appearance in Brawl. This pains me as a Porky fan.
  • :4falcon: - Black Shadow is viable, while Samurai Goroh is not, being an AT. If a new F-Zero ever comes out, I think Samurai Goroh will be chosen for his seniority.
  • :4olimar::4shulk: - No viable villain.
  • :4duckhunt::4gaw::4mii::4rob::4villager::4wiifit: - No villains whatsoever, strictly speaking.

:231:
STAR FOX HAS NO OVERARCHING VILLAIN?!

ANDROSS. PERIOD. XD

And Ganon's Identity issue?

Zelda characters in Smash :4link::4tlink: have :4zelda::4sheik: identity. :4ganondorf::221:Issues.

You really can't use that argument when the series runs off of it for Smash xD

I WAS SUPPOSED TO DELETE THAT. HOW COULD I FORGET.

It was written for Pokémon, but I added Pikachu near Marth and forgot the text bit. Derp.

One time villains with virtually no sign of ever returning aren't what I'd call viable.

Star Hill. Why do you ask?
Because we can't have 2 third party characters from the same company
Geno isn't that popular anymore, also, Cloud and Lara Croft in PSABR. SE said no there, why say yes here?
I don't see a 3rd party campany that isn't Sega or namco getting a 2 characters unless if Konami gets a 1 character in smash 5
Geno is still popular remember when he tied with Megaman in sakurai brawl poll. I even saw some kids from this generation that knows him already square Enix didn't let cloud in psabr because this game is worse copy of ssb
Geno is a relic that is unimportant to Mario and belongs to Square Enix who are really stingy with their characters and they'd rather have their big names like Cloud, Kefka, Slime and Black Mage in it.

We aren't getting THAT many characters and I doubt Geno will end up being voted high enough to be considered for DLC.
he was important in SMRPG most of the story talks about him also SMRPG was important part between Nintendo and square history And cloud or black Mage or other square Enix characters are not requested as much as geno does a lot of people say he is the best pick because he is the relationship between Nintendo and square Enix and made a huge adventure with Mario unlike black Mage and slime who just played sport

Street Fighter V isn't on Nintendo, Ryu was literally out of nowhere
Brawl was about 7 years ago, tim changes things. Then why did they say no to Lara Croft? Why did they say Cloud's hair was copyright infringement for Jim Sterling?
Cloud is popular and is getting a remake. Black Mage is the FF icon. Ridley is important to his franchise, woops, not playable! Geno is also dead. If you say 'no he isn't' then answer me this. Why haven't we seen any Geno stuff all these years?

Still up Peach's dress.
I'll be honest; if Geno gets in as a Mario character before Toad, I'm dropping this entire series altogether. Officially we've entered bizarro world where Nintendo only makes playable pay for DLC of obscure minor characters.

I'll put up with Bowser Jr, I'll put up with Rosalina, I'd put up with Paper Mario...hell, I'd even probably put up with Daisy and Waluigi before (Captain) Toad...but Geno?

Seriously?

Not even the main character of a spinoff game made by a third party that appeared nearly twenty years ago and has only made a singular brief cameo in one of the many many far more successful spiritual successors of that game? That guy as the next Mario character?

Is Geno's fandom some sort of cult or something? Because I don't get it.

Someone please fill me in on why this obscure guy deserves to be included in Smash as a Mario character over the likes of Paper Mario, Toad, Waluigi, Nabbit or Daisy when he's not even managed to appear in a single Mario sports or party game yet.
A bar set so low, even frigging Spike of all characters, is considered a high enough caliber to be playable in.

Most other franchises only have a few noteworthy characters left, but Mario is still missing some staples like Daisy and Toad, who are left behind... :(

I wouldn't call Daisy a staple Mario character.

Call me when she actually gets in more core non-party/sports games, hell I'll take an RPG role but she and Waluigi are roster filler in Party games as of late and has been for years.

Toad has much more room to work with the NSMB games, 3D World/SMB2, Captain Toad and much more.

I know this might not be the right time to say it, but why is Daisy always lumped in with Waluigi in the character discussions? They don't even have the same role in Smash.

I was hurt when bowser jr and Dr.Mario were confirmed
Dr Mario could have been a trophy and Bowser Jr.(as confirmed barely made the roster) could have been assist trophy instead of Waluigi

King Hippo isn't even a villain, let alone the final boss of Punch-Out!! or whatever (Boxers like Mr. Sandman, Mike Tyson, and Nick Bruiser have those honors). People just let that awful Captain N cartoon (which never even aired in Japan) warp their perspective.

The simple answer is....

overrating.

it;s that simple. You're not alone that don't get it and I really think the same way.

Like, tbh, most of the argument I saw so far was arguing that he was important, but it's like....with weird scales.

He IS important in smrpg......true.

is smrpg important to nintendo? The closest you could claim is they made 2 branch of sequelisation of that game, but when it gets tricky is this:

is smrpg even appear to be something with these 2 branches being quite successful?

....I have high doubts. It just seems to be long forgotten. The closest you could claim is yes with superstar saga because geno was there, but this is the first installment of a series of 4 released games (now 5 in more than 6 months).....the fact he has never appeared in all of these games (even paper mario games) is why this is highly doubtful. Basically, they are still based on smrpg, but they got so much away from the source that it just doesn't isn;t dependant on smrpg anymore. Technically, they now aren't dependant on smrpg, but the fact that it's still not referenced much in all these games is why you get why the importance of smrpg alone seems to have heavily decreased.

The only thing that is worth mentioning lately is it's on Wii VC (I think the WiiU VC will happen eventually), but even there, if you consider that paper mario and superstar saga are also on vc (even put before), it;s not much of a distinction.

Like, don't get me wrong, i still respect smrpg as a game because if it wasn;t for that game and the cartbridge issue that came, i wouldn;t even talk about the best video game series I played. The problem here is that smrpg got so far back now that this fact only mattered before, it's not even getting much credits for it now. i do think it at least deserve some, but going like it's going now, i wouldn;t be ready to say that smrpg is important enough, that's btw excluding the thrid party thing. Even without this restriction, i still think he simply isn;t much important as well as the game lately period.

i know I was honestly q bit blunt into this, but that had to be said.

Problem is, Toad has the stigma of "not being the fighting type" while Daisy has the stigma of "being spin-off filler". Rosalina was added to the main Mario games because of her strong following (the directors even said this in an Iwata Asks). She has appeared in enough games as playable at this point to be an established character.

There's absolutely nothing stopping Daisy from appearing in a "proper Mario game" same with nothing stopping Waluigi from appearing in Wario games. It's just the development team's methods of thinking and lack of fan interest.

Ironically, the only reason Waluigi exists is because they needed a partner for Wario in spin-off games. The same applies to Toadette. Even Daisy wouldn't probably appear in Mario games anymore if they hadn't needed a partner for Peach.

Toadette appeared as a main character in Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. This is a feat for a character created in Mario Kart.

Just goes to show that only appearing in a prominent role in a spin-off doesn't hinder character's chances in appearing in core games.

True, maybe we should make some huge online petition to demand Waluigi and Daisy a part of the main Mario Series rather than just spin-offs

I think so too, and I just don't get it.

You like SMRPG? GREAT. It's a...well, it was a good RPG for it's time anyway. Does it deserve a character to celebrate that singular game? No, of course not. Mario, Peach and Bowser were all playable characters in SMRPG anyway.

Even then, why is it only Geno gets the demand? Mallow's as big a character as Geno in that game and he barely gets a look in from the Smash fandom. Then is it because he got that Superstar cameo?

As a Mario fan, this bizarre desire to get such an unimportant character from that series into a game with limited slots baffles and annoys me. All the support that's been shown since Brawl for Geno has done squat to secure Geno even another cameo role in another Mario and Luigi game.

I doubt very much we'll get any additional Mario character in Sm4sh anyway, but if we do I'd rather it be someone who is genuinely important, or at least semi important, to the Mario franchise.

I know this might not be the right time to say it, but why is Daisy always lumped in with Waluigi in the character discussions? They don't even have the same role in Smash.
Simple enough; they started appearing more frequently around the same time within the Mario spinoff games. As an unfortunate result they tend to get lumped together. Probably worth noting they became big when Luigi's popularity was recognised...

I do think Waluigi and Daisy are probably long overdue for a main series appearance though, whether Waluigi appears in either a Mario title or Wario title, it should probably happen soon...after maybe a Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker sequel, I mean. ;D
