Despite my cranky anger yesterday, I'm still a pretty good Ike. 7 player match, got 14 kills with him multiple times today

It's not bad but it's definately an outliter, if he can place consistently in top 8 or win them there might be something there but I doubt it with Ike's limited tools. And the funny thing is slow strong type characters like Ike tend to get worse as the game progresses due to their limits meta game wise and he really isn't a threat now. The highest he could ever be is bottom mid.

Yeah there is. In Smash 4 the gaps are FAR slimmer, though. In Brawl, Ganondorf was literally rock bottom garbage.

Honestly, I don't understand tier lists. Everyone says 3Ds/Wii U Diddy Kong and Brawl Meta Knight require no skill to play, and yet they are one of my worst characters. Though this may just be me being a noob for not knowing how to do combos/not thinking to do them when I have the opportunity (The latter only applies for moves that combo in on themselves). Oh well. I'll just play, and ignore the tier list then.

2.that isnt how tiers work though. tiers are based on top tier players doing top tier things. give someone who spams smash attacks ike and they will win any game of brawl against a noob. give a pro against a pro meta knight vs ike and good luck, hes not getting any sympathy. it isnt ease of use, but maximum power.

Competition isn't everything, though. You can determine a character's viability in areas outside of tournaments, y'know: my brother and I have our own personal tier list of whom we believe are good characters based on our own experience and interaction with others in the local scene.

I don't have an issue with tiers or people prescribing to tiers, they're interesting and they're there for a reason, but they don't factor into my playing certain characters. I play the characters I like and I have fun doing it, and that's that.

I know, and that's exactly my point: tier lists are not an objective quantification of a character's value as a fighter, since competitive rulesets are based on a very particular set of criteria and are designed with a certain style of play in mind. So the tier lists that we see are merely representations of how good a character is in the context of that particular scenario.

A tier list based on a For Fun-style ruleset or eight-player Smash would be very different from one based on no items / stage hazards, 1v1 / doubles as seen in competitive tournaments.

And anyway, viability is an inherently arbitrary concept, it's not like there's an objective standard by which a character's worth is to be judged.

I personally don't care at all about Tier Lists, I love beating high tier characters with low tier ones, but to try to claim they don't exist, that there's not such thing as "bad" or "good" characters, is silly. It's literally impossible for a game like Smash to be perfectly balanced, there are too many characters and too many match-ups to consider. Can't have every character be above average, it's mathematically impossible
