Brawl hack: Shield cancel (L-cancel).

How could removing all lag on L-cancel make the game better? Doesn't that just make aerial approaches broken?

64 was too insane in this respect.
Almost all combos in melee are made possible because the aerial lag in half, and some aerial are so short that they are instant. The purpose of adding shield canceling in brawl is to reduce the risk of using aerial attack that has alot of aerial lag and be punish for it (IE link's dair, Ganon Fair and dair, etc.). They only thing made 64 insane was not because of instant l-cancel, but the ridiculously long hitstun, which is the final thing we need to address.

Not really. MK cant get too much faster which means the other characters will improve more because of it.

With the small hitstun at the moment, canceling all lag is fine. 64 also had extremely weak defensive options combined with a lot of hitstun. Brawl with melee engines will be a better 64 due to better, easier defensive options.

Pikachu is so busted with this, It really DOES remind me of 64.
Kirby got a ton better too.
as well as Ganon and Ike. I amazed at how much better Ike gets.

As a favor to SMK(AKA, Falco400... I think) I revised the L cancel code so it isn't so easy to use and it doesn't erase all delay - though it does significantly speed up you're landing delay if timed right. It only works if you land while doing an attack, not if you're doing any other type of landing.

This version of the code doesn't utilize your shield but rather works on a timer of when you press L/R/Z.

I also made the timers adjust accordingly to the game speed or character speed in case you get a stop watch or you decide to play on slowmo brawl.

After now, I'm done for a while with hacking codes that replicate Melee - I only did this one as I felt it was rather incomplete.

So, has anyone tried the new version of the code? Does it halve the lag or does it take off an arbitrary amount or something?

Yeah, I want to know more about the second code. Is this "true" L-canceling, or a set lag for all aerials? How long is that lag?

Honestly, I think "true" Z-canceling with Brawl's defensive options would make for an epic and balanced game.

EDIT: Phantom Wings, could you modify your code so that the delay is "0"? Should just be a matter of setting a single address, right?

Oh this is sick. :D I mean, it doesn't have too much impact on sonic though... aside from F-air, D-air, and homing attack. :( But still, amazing. Although I don't condone hacked tournies, I love these, hahaha.

Why do you have to copy it by hand? Ocarina's Code Manager makes it pretty much a matter of copy-paste.

I tried the new code, and my only complaint is that you have to hit L/R way earlier than you do in Melee, so it threw me off a bit.

EDIT: That, and now Ike isn't as quick. :[

No computer. I download stuff with my DS and if the site is too complicated it will crash. If somehow it can be posted on the smashboards as a attachment I might be able to download it.

Btw Phantom you have a gift for codes thanks for all the help the last few days. You have given us material that we may not yet fully understand months from now. And whenever people ask me how Brawl 2.0 got started I will tell them the tale of one courageous coder: Phantom Wings and how he did it lulz.

Plus you have to press L WAY early.


Ike sucks again.
But for other, faster characters, this is an improvement.

Phantom Wings, for reference, in Melee you had a 7-frame window RIGHT before you landed to hit L/R, and it halved the lag from an aerial. Many of us seem to agree that given Brawl's defensive options, NO lag would be acceptable to test with.

It sounds like the timer starts when you start attacking, which is not how Melee/SSB64 work at all. If you can't make it based on when you land, could you just remove the input timer altogether?

Best week in Brawl history.

I haven't tested it out yet, but I will within the next few minutes.

From what I read, a little tweaking (the window for pressing the button to lcancel), and it'd probably be perfect, is my guess.

Don't rush to add hitstun just yet; get the lcancel working nicely. That's just my two-cents, though.

Going to mess around with this now. :]

It really looks like the game actually HAS enough hitstun, but you're allowed to attack/AD during that hitstun, so if Phantom Wings would just ever-so-kindly disable that for us we'd have perfect hitstun.

i agree. i would actually like to see the ledge to be better before hitstun. Reverse grabbing is fine, just no auto sweetspot and pause before doing anything. Hitstun should be last due to individual amounts. You cant give 2 sec hitstuns to a jab lol so balancing hitstun will take time.

This works really, really well. Without the Brawl airdodge, and now with the ability to approach AND punish your opponent, "combos" are available, and the game is, IMO, so much more fun than ever.
Playing against level 4 comps just now was more fun than any Brawl weekly I've been to.

My suggestion:
Try making the window that you have to press the shield button either three seconds longer than it is now, or move the window over three seconds (like, it's starts three seconds later than it is now, and ends three seconds later than it is now). That's my on suggestion. I'm pretty sure it'll feel just about right with that change. :] But that's why we test things, yes?

My problem:
I played a few matches with some characters against a random level 4 computer. Finally, I came to my Falcon vs a CPU Ice Climbers. The match froze once the announcer said "3!". I'll double check in a bit to see if it's an IC problem; because I'd played matches with Falcon previously, and nothing like that had happened.
