Well, I think this thread is awesome. No, I think there is still a chance, I mean henchmen and bosses can be PC's. For example, it may be a different game series, but in Mario Party 8, Blooper and Hammer Bro were Bowser's henchmen and later on were playable people. So, no, I wouldn't count them out yet...

Note that Petey is carrying two large cages as he is about to fight. Unless this hypothetical playable Petey doesn't use his arms in any of his moves, the boss Petey is going to have a different set of attacks. Doubly so if the boss has any attacks that involve swinging the cages at you, or moves that are dependent on his tremendous girth to make sense.
I'm pretty solidly convinced that Petey is unconfirmed, but if the topic creator isn't, I guess we could give him a two-week grace period before putting him up. That's how long it took Peach to get a Dojo post, anyway.
Also, I mourn for R.O.B. Now I need to find a new character support for the super-secret crazy-retro character spot...

I don't think that Petey's moveset will involve swinging the cages... I think he might throw them away to fight, cause... Don't the characters all change with who you pick? So if you pick Peach in Subspace I doubt that you will have to fight petey while being trapped inside a cage...

Maybe if you pick Peach you have to fight Petey while Pit/Kirby/Link/anyone, really/etc is in a cage.... who knows. I think the Emissary has a dynamic, random storyline.

Bowser was a boss in adventure mode or w/e and you could play as him. But I do not support petey too much, think he would be awkward and too big of a character to play.

So this brings up my point, if Petey isn't totally de-confirmed due to Adventure Mode boss status (of what we know so far), then how come some others are on there as if they were totally de-confirmed? Is it really much of a good idea to add a character to this topic if it's even remotely debatable if their de-confirmed or not? At least the ATs are undebatable in terms of being playable except for really wishful thinking involving "Sakurai may change his mind".
Before anyone calls me a fanboy, I hardly care about seeing Tom Nook, K.K. Slider, Palutena, or R.O.B. playable.

Guys, I could honestly see R.O.B. still being in Brawl. This is a different game then Melee. Just because he appears in the adventure mode, doesn't mean he can't be a PC.
Obviously in Melee, Paratrooper and Koopa weren't in the game, they were just random bad guys throughout adventure mode. But this is Brawl. New rules and such...

I'm with you. Petey does not desrve a spot where much more worthy characters can make it. And i don't think the Toad fans would be very happy if they chose Petey to be in Brawl as playable over Toad. Who wouldn't be angry about a character that has been around since 2001 get a spot over someone that has been around for more then 20 years. In fact, i think the reason Petey won't be playable due to him being is because he isn't one of the Big 8. He is only a boss from Sunshine that is a filler character in most of the sports games. His poularity should go down once Galaxy comes up and the Piranha Plant Dinosaur (Seen in Screenshots) takes his place. Any character that isn't in the Big 8 Mario characters are going to be ATs, Stickers,other, or not even make an apperence at all. 6 of the big 8 are confirmed in, only 1 has been deconfirmed, and only one has a big chance at returning. I will list them:
1. Mario (confirmed of course)
2. Luigi (unconfirmed, but nobody doubts his return)
3. Wario (confirmed since start)
4. Toad (deconfirmed)
5. Yoshi (confirmed)
6. Peach (confirmed recently)
7. Bowser (confirmed)
8. Donkey Kong (confirmed)
IMO, the only other playable Mario character will be Luigi that we will see. I severely doubt Petey as a playable will happen.

I am sorry about this double post, but due to Diddy being confirmed. This deconfirms Dixie doesn't it? I wouldn't think Sakauri would put in Dixie along with Diddy as seperate characters.

That's just speculation at this point. I wouldn't deconfirm her just yet. (Could be something really weird like a alt suit or maybe just a clone)
Take R.O.B. off the list. There's really no reason to think he's deconfirmed at this point. He's shown opening a bomb for the Subspace Army. Keep in mind, the AM is also shown flying to the Halberd. Does that deconfirm Metaknight because he appears to be part of the bad guys in this scene?
All this tells us is that R.O.B. has been evil all along, sitting in your living room, laughing while you forced him through petty games of Gyromite while his crappy camera ran full surveillance on your house for the coming invasion.

I think this is jumping to conclusions a bit too much. I already feel like there's a few characters on that list who were not totally de-confirmed and were added just for the sake of it. Not saying you're the one who makes the list or anything, but I think this topic will lose valid status (more then what I personally feel it already lost) if anyone started getting on the list with limited proof of being de-confirmed.

I'm not saying she has any bit of a chance of making it in, but "deconfirmed" is saying that it's a fact, while it hasn't been proven as so.

You know, Sakurai is not going to say "Hey! X character is unplayable! Sorry!" in one of his post, so we have to assume there are deconfirmed by the looks of it. Until I'm proven wrong by Sakurai himself, the characters will not be removed.
By the way, not everything has to be an assist trophy to be officially deconfirmed. They could be in backgrounds, cinematic cameos, or not there at all. I mean, why does EVERYTHING we see must be playable?

I think that a character should be put in the Brawl Graveyard for 3 reasons. (1) A character is an Assist Trophy. (2) A character is a Pokemon in a Pokeball. (3) A character is officially denounced. (Sakurai says on the Smash Bros. Dojo, "Jigglypuff will not be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.)
Out of the three, the first two are the ones most likely to happen. Until then, IMO, a character shouldn't be considered debunked. Yes, I'll admit, I think that it is less likely for some characters to be on the game if they are a part of a move or something, but that doesn't mean that they are 100% deconfirmed.
