Eggm, that actually seems like it might be a good idea. I could get the top floor and run half Melee, half Brawl...no offense but if I were to host any Melee at all it'd have to be on the same day or weekend as a Brawl event there, because I'd rather not have to spend my Saturday running/hosting a tourney for a game I don't play/am not good at when I could be actually entering at a Brawl event elsewhere.

That said, the idea of two-game events sounds respectable enough to me, provided everyone would be cool with potentially paying a $10 venue fee for a divided venue. Feel free to spread the word to the Melee community if you'd like. I'm going to talk to my dad now, venue rentals take place between 8 and 10 PM on Tuesday evenings and maybe he'll take a walk over there and see what kind of negotiations he can make.

Chris, the venue is certainly worth $10. What I may do, depending on the prices I get from these people, is rent both halls and put Melee downstairs because as of now it's inevitably going to be smaller.

I'm not paying more money than I have to for the inclusion of a game I don't even play. That's just me though. Do what you want.

I'm pretty sure it was 10$ reguardless. Anyways, having them both on the same day shouldn't be a big deal because theres 2 floors we can put melee on the smaller floor and brawl on the larger floor. If it was gonna be 5$ and now its gonna be 10$ and people won't pay then just drop melee it was just an idea. Me or videogamehero or some other melee player coming would be more than willing to host it btw, so you wouldn't have anything to do with it, you could still enter brawl and not have to worry about us.

Eggm is right, Chris. It'd be $10 either way. The reason I said "$10 for a divided venue" was because the Melee crowd would have to have part of the upstairs segmented off if I don't manage to get both floors.

My dad just spoke with the president of the building.

Basically, there's NO way we're going to be able to run Melee. The cost of the upstairs is bizarre. There's pretty much no way for me to break even without a massive amount of luck up there, especially for the first event, and I refuse to run both events in the smaller downstairs.

tl;dr: The first event will be Brawl-only.

He's heading down to the hall around 8 to get final permissions and check available dates. The president guy said it was totally cool with him. Since I'm upfront with you guys, I'm not going to keep any hiccups hidden from you: right now the main problem is that the venue is generally rented out for 6-8 hours at a given price and then, depending on potential bookings afterwards, may or may not remain open until about 11 PM (but the president said that they'll generally let you stay until 12, though we as a community shouldn't push this).

Basically, if there are no extra reservations for the day, we can have it for the entire day...and if not, we're ****ed. My dad is gonna see what he can do about offering them extra money in exchange for an eleven or twelve hour booking.

Alright, so my dad just left the building...

I have good and bad news. The upstairs is actually much cheaper than we had previously been informed about. However, it is still a VERY expensive venue and I am not going to host an event here unless enough people will confirm so that I can be sure this is a safe investment. I may consider preregistration for this matter, but I doubt it'll be necessary.

The only way I can ABSOLUTELY break even here is to impose a $10 venue fee. I'm very sorry, guys. I'll see what I can do regarding discounts for bringing setups (there will definitely 100% be a discount for doing so, but I'm not sure about full reimbursing). Since the venue fee is very expensive for NJ, I know lots of people are going to be trying to get their setups in here. What I think I'm going to do is offer the discount on a first-come, first-serve basis. I know this may upset some people, but if you don't want to pay the full price, you need to come early or it can end up coming out of MY pocket. I'm not trying to do this to be selfish, guys, but I really NEED to make sure I break even.

Potentially the worst news we'll be hearing today is that there is in fact an attendance cap. The downstairs of the venue is only allowed to hold 64 people by state law for a party-themed event. However, the upstairs (which is looking almost guaranteed to be our place for tournament-holding) holds 128.

Obviously the venue owners aren't going to be keeping track of everyone and having a head count, but I REALLY do not want to risk losing this venue. I doubt 128 people will show up to the first event, but in the case that we do decide to go the cheaper route and use the downstairs, 64 is not a lot of people. We could squeeze 70, maybe 75 or 80 if we're lucky...but I REALLY do not want to risk this. Getting this venue is a huge step for New Jersey and losing it would be a massive kick in the sack. If we do opt for downstairs, I am probably going to make a preregistration list and cap it at 64.

If you're not prereg'd and you show up, be prepared to pay venue fee anyway and risk getting kicked out with no chance of a refund. Hell, you'll be lucky if I don't charge you extra. Sorry kids, just how things work in the real world. This isn't magic Inui hotel land anymore.

I haven't heard any news regarding the policy on the venue's availability. If it is not 100% guaranteed that we will have this venue for hours like 11 to 11 (probably 10 to 11), then I refuse to host here. I don't want a KTAR/Kosha Boy fiasco happening and having the entire community look down upon my hosting because there was some kind of miscommunication or mistake that wasn't my fault.

And now, for the amazing, super fantastic news:

The entire months of June and July are unbooked. They have no restrictions on how frequently I can host here, so long as I book the venue.

That's right, NJ/NY. We might be seeing BI-WEEKLIES. If attendance isn't looking in tip top shape every time I host, though, that can turn into tri-weeklies or monthlies. Again, I NEED a specific minimum turnout in order to make this possible.

So now, since I know everyone wants to see events happening right here in Bergen County, I need to ask something of you guys, the community. I STRONGLY urge that you try to spread the word on these tournaments as much as possible. I know JG is planning to make a hype video for this. That's an amazing idea, JG, and I'd appreciate it greatly for you to do that. But really, making sure the word gets out on this is CRUCIAL if tournaments are going to happen here! I'll be in charge of posting this thread in the NJ finder and crew threads in the area, potentially contacting Crismas about some kind of artistic help (signatures), and doing whatever I can via word of mouth at tournaments to make sure this gets spread as far as it can.

What can you guys do to help? Talk to people about it. When the topic of upcoming tournaments arises, bring this up if you're interested. Post blogs about it on AllisBrawl. Do your thing. Help me advertise. I'm going to thank each and every one of you that helps me out in advance. These tournaments are going to be ****ing sick. Bet your lunch money on it.

If this works out. Paradigm will throw in its support, bro. And we have a ton of setups!

This is only about 20 minutes from us, too. Holy ****, Doom, this is awesome.

Follow-up conversation with my dad.

May 29th is open as of today. Somebody may have booked it after my dad left, but he'll go back to check next week.

Who would be interested in attending an event here on MAY 29TH, 2010? As far as I know, there is nothing going on in NJ/NY on that date and it would be absolutely perfect to start hosting here. It's also the weekend before MLG Columbus, and nothing gets you prepped and pumped for a huge tournament like a nice solid potential regional.

Again, I NEED a certain amount of interest in order to propel this forward. Please ask around and tell everyone about this! If I get a really nice number, like 60+, then this is going to happen. Please, everybody, I urge you to express interest for this so I can determine if it's even worth going down there on Tuesday to book the venue for.

I of course support and will be here. You should start an allisbrawl page. It helps create and keep track of people who are planning to come.

$10.00 venue fee is nothing. People need to step up their monies and expect this much. With the stress a tournament can cause a host they deserve any money they can pocket.

May 29th? This should be good for me. This reminds me that I gotta step up my venue searching. I don't wanna wait for the church and the internet cafe seemed a bit small.

Looks like we'll be hosting on the 29th after all, huh? I'll tell my dad to book the venue next Tuesday.

Only issue here now is making sure nobody got that date yesterday, so no promises for another 6 days.

Well, like with most people who don't profit from the game(I assume) and still play it, I only go to see people. I already sold my copy of brawl and have no desire to get it back. With school, and work the chances of me ever getting a saturday free are slim for a very long time since I currently work saturdays and starting in a few months I'll have school on Saturdays too. I WILL be taking off w/e I have to go to in order to go to a last event. Who knows though, my schedule could drastically change in yet another 3 months, more people might be hired on saturdays instead of me, etc, etc. It's only a potential like I said, but just in case I'd like to make it a good event.

Ahh, completely understandable. I've been job hunting around and I'm already willing to give up Smash/Saturday if I have to there. Guaranteed money > Smash

Also, ugh, Saturday classes. Glad I haven't gone through that yet. You should definitely make an effort to show up to Apex though!
